This book was released on 1989-12-01 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a gap in literature for the important interdisciplinary area of biochemical physics, adopting the chemist's view of this topic in the process. The present status of the theory of electron spin effects in fundamental processes such as spin exchange, dipole-dipole interactions, electron transfer, triplet-triplet energy transfer, and annihilation intersystem crossing is reviewed. These effects form a basis for the understanding of the molecular mechanisms essential to chemical and biological reactions including photosynthesis and magnetic field influence, and for the creation of advanced organic magnets and catalysts, as well as the development of new methods of studying the structural and molecular dynamics of biological and non-biological objects.

The second section consists of research reports in these areas and also on other currently important topics such as supersymmetric gauge theories, two-dimensional quantum gravity and black holes.
Book Synopsis Quantum Field Theory, Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Groups And Topology - Proceedings Of The Nato Advanced Research Workshop by : Thomas L Curtright
Download or read book Quantum Field Theory, Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Groups And Topology - Proceedings Of The Nato Advanced Research Workshop written by Thomas L Curtright and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-10-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an introduction to quantum mechanics at a level suitable for the second year in a European university (junior or senior year in an American college). The matrix formulation of quantum mechanics is emphasized throughout, and the student is introduced to Dirac notation from the start. A number of major examples illustrate the workings of quantum mechanics. Several of these examples are taken from solid state physics, with the purpose of showing that quantum mechanics forms the common basis for understanding atoms, molecules and condensed matter. The book contains an introductory chapter which puts the concepts of quantum mechanics into a historical framework. The solid-state applications discussed in this text include the quantum Hall effect, spin waves, quantum wells and energy bands. Other examples feature the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator, coherent states, two-electron atoms, the ammonia molecule and the chemical bond. A large number of homework problems are included.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivations, goals and general culture of theoretical physics and mathematics are different. Most practitioners of either discipline have no necessity for most of the time to keep abreast of the latest developments in the other. However on occasion newly developed mathematical concepts become relevant in theoretical physics and the less rigorous theoretical physics framework may prove valuable in understanding and suggesting new theorems and approaches in pure mathematics. Such interdis ciplinary successes invariably cause much rejoicing, as over a prodigal son returned. In recent years the framework provided by quantum field theory and functional in tegrals, developed over half a century in theoretical physics, have proved a fertile soil for developments in low dimensional topology and especially knot theory. Given this background it was particularly pleasing that NATO was able to generously sup port an Advanced Research Workshop to be held in Cambridge, England from 6th to 12th September 1992 with the title Low Dimensional Topology and Quantum Field Theory. Although independently organised this overlapped as far as some speak ers were concerned with a longer term programme with the same title organised by Professor M Green, Professor E Corrigan and Dr R Lickorish. The contents of this proceedings of the workshop demonstrate the breadth of topics now of interest on the interface between theoretical physics and mathematics as well as the sophistication of the mathematical tools required in current theoretical physics.
Book Synopsis From Superstrings To Supergravity - Proceedings Of The 26th Workshop Of The Eloisatron Project by : Duff Michael James

This book was released on 1994-03-28 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the standard model in explaining low energy (≈ 100GeV) physics within the framework of spontaneously broken Yang-Mills theory has given physicists the hope that the Einstein dream of a unified theory of fundamental interactions might be achieved using geometrical methods of local symmetry principles supplemented by consistency requirements such as renormalization, unitarity and, most crucially, compatibility with present low energy data.Merging these principles with the quantum-mechanical notions of spin and statistics led physicists further to develop new theories in the last fifteen years for which the gauge symmetry principle is extended to incorporate supersymmetry and relativistic extended objects - the most famous example being superstrings propagating in curved space-time and having supergravity as their effective field theory. The proceedings represent the latest highlights in the field reported on by active researchers working in this particular area in addition to discussions on future perspectives.

Book Synopsis Space-Time Foliation in Quantum Gravity by : Yuki Sato
Download or read book Space-Time Foliation in Quantum Gravity written by Yuki Sato and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-28 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the author considers quantum gravity to investigate the mysterious origin of our universe and its mechanisms. He and his collaborators have greatly improved the analyticity of two models: causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) and n-DBI gravity, with the space-time foliation which is one common factor shared by these two separate models. In the first part, the analytic method of coupling matters to CDT in 2-dimensional toy models is proposed to uncover the underlying mechanisms of the universe and to remove ambiguities remaining in CDT. As a result, the wave function of the 2-dimensional universe where matters are coupled is derived. The behavior of the wave function reveals that the Hausdorff dimension can be changed when the matter is non-unitary. In the second part, the n-DBI gravity model is considered. The author mainly investigates two effects driven by the space-time foliation: the appearance of a new conserved charge in black holes and an extra scalar mode of the graviton. The former implies a breakdown of the black-hole uniqueness theorem while the latter does not show any pathological behavior.
