Book Synopsis Convection in Astrophysics (IAU S239) by : International Astronomical Union. Symposium
Download or read book Convection in Astrophysics (IAU S239) written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convection is ubiquitous throughout the Universe, and during the last three decades it has become the largest factor of uncertainty in theoretical models of stars and in the interpretation of observations on the basis of such models. Recently, numerical simulations of convection have dramatically improved in their potential to take into account both the large scale properties of the flow itself and the microphysical properties of the fluid. Observations have become accurate enough to provide stringent tests for both numerical simulations and models of convection. IAU S239 was held to further understanding of convection, bringing together leading researchers in solar and stellar physics, the physics of planets, and of accretion disks. With reviews, research contributions, and detailed recordings of plenary discussions, this book is a valuable resource for professional astronomers and graduate students interested in the interdisciplinary study of one of the key physical processes in astrophysics.

Book Synopsis New Approaches and Concepts in Turbulence by : T. Dracos
Download or read book New Approaches and Concepts in Turbulence written by T. Dracos and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of a colloquium held in Monte Verit from September 9-13, 1991. Special care has been taken to devote adequate space to the scientific discussions, which claimed about half of the time available. Scientists from all over the world presented their views on the importance of kinematic properties, topology and fractal geometry, and on the dynamic behaviour of turbulent flows. They debated the importance of coherent structures and the possibility to incorporate these in the statistical theory of turbulence, as well as their significance for the reduction of the degrees of freedom and the prospective of dynamical systems and chaos approaches to the problem of turbulence. Also under discussion was the relevance of these new approaches to the study of the instability and the origin of turbulence, and the importance of numerical and physical experiments in improving the understanding of turbulence.
Book Synopsis Transition, Turbulence and Combustion by : M.Y. Hussaini
Download or read book Transition, Turbulence and Combustion written by M.Y. Hussaini and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-09-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes contain the proceedings of the Workshop on Transition, Turbulence and Combustion, sponsored by the Insti tute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), during June 7 to July 2, 1993. Volume I contains the contributions from the transi tion research, and Volume II contains the contributions from both the turbulence and combustion research. This is the third workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, the second in 1991, and their proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the titles "Instability and Transition" (edited by M. Y. H ussaini and R. G. Voigt) and "Instability, Transition and Turbulence" (edited by M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar and C. L. Streett) respectively. The objectives of these workshops are to expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of transition, turbulence and combustion, and to acquaint the academic COllllllU nity with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC. It is hoped these will foster con tinued interactions, and accelerate progress in elucidating the funda mental phenomena of transition, turbulence and combustion. The research areas of interest in transition covered the full range of the subject: linear and nonlinear stability, direct and large-eddy simulation and phenomenological modeling of the transition zone.
Book Synopsis Advances in Turbulence V by : Roberto Benzi
Download or read book Advances in Turbulence V written by Roberto Benzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the auspices of the Euromech Committee, the Fifth European Turbulence Conference was held in Siena on 5-8 July 1994. Following the previous ETC meeting in Lyon (1986), Berlin (1988), Stockholm (1990) and Delft (1992), the Fifth ETC was aimed at providing a review of the fundamental aspects of turbulence from a theoretical, numerical and experimental point of view. In the magnificent town of Siena, more than 250 scientists from all over the world, spent four days discussing new ideas on turbulence. As a research worker in the field of turbulence, I must say that the works presented at the Conference, on which this book is based, covered almost all areas in this field. I also think that this book provides a major opportunity to have a complete overview of the most recent research works. I am extremely grateful to Prof. C. Cercignani, Dr. M. Loffredo, and Prof. R. Piva who, as members of the local organizing committee, share the success of the Conference. I also want to thank Mrs. Liu' Catena, for her invaluable contribution to the work done by the local organizing committee and the European Turbulence Committee in the scientific organization of the meeting. The "Servizio Congressi" of the University of Siena provided perfect organization in Siena and wonderful hospitality. The Conference has been supported by CNR, Cira, Alenia, the Universities of Rome "Tor Vergata" and "La Sapienza".
