Book Synopsis Seminar on Differential Geometry by : Shing-Tung Yau
Download or read book Seminar on Differential Geometry written by Shing-Tung Yau and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1982-03-21 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers constitutes a wide-ranging survey of recent developments in differential geometry and its interactions with other fields, especially partial differential equations and mathematical physics. This area of mathematics was the subject of a special program at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton during the academic year 1979-1980; the papers in this volume were contributed by the speakers in the sequence of seminars organized by Shing-Tung Yau for this program. Both survey articles and articles presenting new results are included. The articles on differential geometry and partial differential equations include a general survey article by the editor on the relationship of the two fields and more specialized articles on topics including harmonic mappings, isoperimetric and Poincaré inequalities, metrics with specified curvature properties, the Monge-Arnpere equation, L2 harmonic forms and cohomology, manifolds of positive curvature, isometric embedding, and Kraumlhler manifolds and metrics. The articles on differential geometry and mathematical physics cover such topics as renormalization, instantons, gauge fields and the Yang-Mills equation, nonlinear evolution equations, incompleteness of space-times, black holes, and quantum gravity. A feature of special interest is the inclusion of a list of more than one hundred unsolved research problems compiled by the editor with comments and bibliographical information.

Book Synopsis Differential Geometry and Complex Analysis by : I. Chavel
Download or read book Differential Geometry and Complex Analysis written by I. Chavel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is dedicated to the memory of Harry Ernest Rauch, who died suddenly on June 18, 1979. In organizing the volume we solicited: (i) articles summarizing Rauch's own work in differential geometry, complex analysis and theta functions (ii) articles which would give the reader an idea of the depth and breadth of Rauch's researches, interests, and influence, in the fields he investigated, and (iii) articles of high scientific quality which would be of general interest. In each of the areas to which Rauch made significant contribution - pinching theorems, teichmiiller theory, and theta functions as they apply to Riemann surfaces - there has been substantial progress. Our hope is that the volume conveys the originality of Rauch's own work, the continuing vitality of the fields he influenced, and the enduring respect for, and tribute to, him and his accom plishments in the mathematical community. Finally, it is a pleasure to thank the Department of Mathematics, of the Grad uate School of the City University of New York, for their logistical support, James Rauch who helped us with the biography, and Springer-Verlag for all their efforts in producing this volume. Book Synopsis New Complex Analytic Methods in the Study of Non-Orientable Minimal Surfaces in Rn by : Antonio Alarcón
Download or read book New Complex Analytic Methods in the Study of Non-Orientable Minimal Surfaces in Rn written by Antonio Alarcón and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the new tools mentioned above apply to non-orientable minimal surfaces endowed with a fixed choice of a conformal structure. This enables the authors to obtain significant new applications to the global theory of non-orientable minimal surfaces. In particular, they construct proper non-orientable conformal minimal surfaces in Rn with any given conformal structure, complete non-orientable minimal surfaces in Rn with arbitrary conformal type whose generalized Gauss map is nondegenerate and omits n hyperplanes of CPn−1 in general position, complete non-orientable minimal surfaces bounded by Jordan curves, and complete proper non-orientable minimal surfaces normalized by bordered surfaces in p-convex domains of Rn.

Book Synopsis Representation Theory and Automorphic Forms by : T. N. Bailey
Download or read book Representation Theory and Automorphic Forms written by T. N. Bailey and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lectures from a course in the representation theory of semi- simple groups, automorphic forms, and the relations between them. The purpose is to help analysts make systematic use of Lie groups in work on harmonic analysis, differential equations, and mathematical physics; and to provide number theorists with the representation-theoretic input to Wiles's proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. Begins with an introductory treatment of structure theory and ends with the current status of functionality. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Book Synopsis Cohomological Induction and Unitary Representations (PMS-45), Volume 45 by : Anthony W. Knapp
Download or read book Cohomological Induction and Unitary Representations (PMS-45), Volume 45 written by Anthony W. Knapp and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic treatment--the first in book form--of the development and use of cohomological induction to construct unitary representations. George Mackey introduced induction in 1950 as a real analysis construction for passing from a unitary representation of a closed subgroup of a locally compact group to a unitary representation of the whole group. Later a parallel construction using complex analysis and its associated co-homology theories grew up as a result of work by Borel, Weil, Harish-Chandra, Bott, Langlands, Kostant, and Schmid. Cohomological induction, introduced by Zuckerman, is an algebraic analog that is technically more manageable than the complex-analysis construction and leads to a large repertory of irreducible unitary representations of reductive Lie groups. The book, which is accessible to students beyond the first year of graduate school, will interest mathematicians and physicists who want to learn about and take advantage of the algebraic side of the representation theory of Lie groups. Cohomological Induction and Unitary Representations develops the necessary background in representation theory and includes an introductory chapter of motivation, a thorough treatment of the "translation principle," and four appendices on algebra and analysis.
Book Synopsis Minimal Surfaces from a Complex Analytic Viewpoint by : Antonio Alarcón
Download or read book Minimal Surfaces from a Complex Analytic Viewpoint written by Antonio Alarcón and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers the first systematic treatment of the theory of minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces by complex analytic methods, many of which have been developed in recent decades as part of the theory of Oka manifolds (the h-principle in complex analysis). It places particular emphasis on the study of the global theory of minimal surfaces with a given complex structure. Advanced methods of holomorphic approximation, interpolation, and homotopy classification of manifold-valued maps, along with elements of convex integration theory, are implemented for the first time in the theory of minimal surfaces. The text also presents newly developed methods for constructing minimal surfaces in minimally convex domains of Rn, based on the Riemann–Hilbert boundary value problem adapted to minimal surfaces and holomorphic null curves. These methods also provide major advances in the classical Calabi–Yau problem, yielding in particular minimal surfaces with the conformal structure of any given bordered Riemann surface. Offering new directions in the field and several challenging open problems, the primary audience of the book are researchers (including postdocs and PhD students) in differential geometry and complex analysis. Although not primarily intended as a textbook, two introductory chapters surveying background material and the classical theory of minimal surfaces also make it suitable for preparing Masters or PhD level courses.
