Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field within computer science that is attempting to build enhanced intelligence into computer systems. This book traces the history of the subject, from the early dreams of eighteenth-century (and earlier) pioneers to the more successful work of today's AI engineers. AI is becoming more and more a part of everyone's life. The technology is already embedded in face-recognizing cameras, speech-recognition software, Internet search engines, and health-care robots, among other applications. The book's many diagrams and easy-to-understand descriptions of AI programs will help the casual reader gain an understanding of how these and other AI systems actually work. Its thorough (but unobtrusive) end-of-chapter notes containing citations to important source materials will be of great use to AI scholars and researchers. This book promises to be the definitive history of a field that has captivated the imaginations of scientists, philosophers, and writers for centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the conference and two abstracts from invited speakers. The programme committee selected these 25 papers from 12 countries out of 65 submissions from 17 countries. The rst JELIA meeting was in Rosco , France, ten years ago. Afterwards, it took place in the Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, Portugal, and now again in Germany. The proceedings of the last four meetings appeared in the Springer-Verlag LNCS series, and a selected series of papers of the English and the Portuguese meeting appeared as special issues in the Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics and in the Journal of Automated Reasoning, respectively. The aim of JELIA was and still is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and results in the domain of foundations of AI, focusing on rigorous descriptions of some aspects of intelligence. These descriptions are promoted by applications, and produced by logical tools and methods. The papers contained in this volume cover the following topics: 1. Logic programming 2. Epistemic logics 3. Theorem proving 4. Non-monotonic reasoning 5. Non-standard logics 6. Knowledge representation 7. Higher order logics We would like to warmly thank the authors, the invited speakers, the m- bers of the program committee, and the additional reviewers listed below. They all have made these proceedings possible and ensured their quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 8th International Conference on Theory and Applications of Satis?ability Testing(SAT2005)providedaninternationalforumforthemostrecentresearch on the satis?ablity problem (SAT). SAT is the classic problem of determining whether or not a propositional formula has a satisfying truth assignment. It was the ?rst problem shown by Cook to be NP-complete. Despite its seemingly specialized nature, satis?ability testing has proved to extremely useful in a wide range of di?erent disciplines, both from a practical as well as from a theoretical point of view. For example, work on SAT continues to provide insight into various fundamental problems in computation, and SAT solving technology has advanced to the point where it has become the most e?ective way of solving a number of practical problems. The SAT series of conferences are multidisciplinary conferences intended to bring together researchers from various disciplines who are interested in SAT. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: proof systems and proof c- plexity; search algorithms and heuristics; analysis of algorithms; theories beyond the propositional; hard instances and random formulae; problem encodings; - dustrial applications; solvers and other tools. This volume contains the papers accepted for presentation at SAT 2005. The conference attracted a record number of 73 submissions. Of these, 26 papers were accepted for presentation in the technical programme. In addition, 16 - pers were accepted as shorter papers and were presented as posters during the technicalprogramme.Theacceptedpapersandposterpaperscoverthefullrange of topics listed in the call for papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the 2nd European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2005) held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, from 29th May to 1st June, 2005. The vision of the Semantic Web is to enhance today’s Web via the exploi- tion of machine-processable metadata. The explicit representation of the sem- tics of data, accompanied with domain theories (ontologies), will enable a web that provides a qualitatively new level of service. It will weave together an - crediblylargenetworkofhumanknowledgeandwillcomplementitwithmachine processability. Various automated services will help the user to achieve goals by accessing and providing information in a machine-understandable form. This process may ultimately create extremely knowledgeable systems with various specialized reasoning services systems. Many technologies and methodologies are being developed within arti?cial intelligence, human language technology, machine learning, databases, software engineering and information systems that can contribute to the realization of this vision. The 2nd Annual European Semantic Web Conference presented the latest results in research and applications of Semantic Web technologies. Following the success of the ?rst edition, ESWC showed a signi?cant increase in participation. With148submissions,thenumberofpapersdoubledthatofthepreviousedition. Each submission was evaluated by at least three reviewers. The selection process resulted in the acceptance of 48 papers for publication and presentation at the conference (an acceptance rate of 32%). Papers did not come only from Europe but also from other continents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although bats and dolphins live in very different environments, are vastly different in size, and hunt different kinds of prey, both groups have evolved similar sonar systems, known as echolocation, to locate food and navigate the skies and seas. While much research has been conducted over the past thirty years on echolocation in bats and dolphins, this volume is the first to compare what is known about echolocation in each group, to point out what information is missing, and to identify future areas of research. Echolocation in Bats and Dolphins consists of six sections: mechanisms of echolocation signal production; the anatomy and physiology of signal reception and interpretation; performance and cognition; ecological and evolutionary aspects of echolocation mammals; theoretical and methodological topics; and possible echolocation capabilities in other mammals, including shrews, seals, and baleen whales. Animal behaviorists, ecologists, physiologists, and both scientists and engineers who work in the field of bioacoustics will benefit from this book.

This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the Eighth International C- ference on Logic for Programming, Arti?cial Intelligence and Reasoning (LPAR 2001), held on December 3-7, 2001, at the University of Havana (Cuba), together with the Second International Workshop on Implementation of Logics. There were 112 submissions, of which 19 belonged to the special subm- sion category of experimental papers, intended to describe implementations or comparisons of systems, or experiments with systems. Each submission was - viewed by at least three program committee members and an electronic program committee meeting was held via the Internet. The high number of submissions caused a large amount of work, and we are very grateful to the other 31 PC members for their e?ciency and for the quality of their reviews and discussions. Finally, the committee decided to accept 40papers in the theoretical ca- gory, and 9 experimental papers. In addition to the refereed papers, this volume contains an extended abstract of the invited talk by Frank Wolter. Two other invited lectures were given by Matthias Baaz and Manuel Hermenegildo. Apart from the program committee, we would also like to thank the other people who made LPAR 2001 possible: the additional referees; the Local Arran- ` gements Chair Luciano Garc ́?a; Andr ́es Navarro and Oscar Guell, ̈ who ran the internet-based submission software and the program committee discussion so- ware at the LSI Department lab in Barcelona; and Bill McCune, whose program committee management software was used.
