Book Synopsis Language Pluralism in Botswana by : Birgit Smieja
Download or read book Language Pluralism in Botswana written by Birgit Smieja and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study about the plurilingual language situation in Botswana is to show tendencies in the attitudes of Botswana citizens towards the ca. 25 languages that are still in use. Results are presented on questions like - which differentiated roles do the official language English, the national language Setswana, and the so-called minority languages play in the present Botswanan society? The overall question of which language will win the race, which ones will survive in the language contest and which ones will not, will be analysed and discussed on the basis of extensive survey data. Based on socio-historical background information, language phenomena like bi-and multilingualism, diglossia, language shift, code switching, language status and power structures, and ethnic stereotypes triggered by language are explored and linked to the current language policy and its implementation in the educational system. Contents: Brief historical profile and sociolinguistic account -- Bi- and multilingualism -- Diglossia -- Language shift and language maintenance -- Code switching -- Language status -- Language stereotypes."

Book Synopsis Negation and Negative Concord by : Viviane Déprez
Download or read book Negation and Negative Concord written by Viviane Déprez and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While universally present in languages, negation is well-known to manifest a surprising cross-linguistic diversity of forms. In creole languages, however, negation and negative dependencies have been regarded as largely uniform. Creole languages as Bickerton claims in Roots of Language, generally exhibit negative concord, a construction popularly dubbed ‘double negation’, where several expressions, each negative on its own, come together with a logic-defying single negation interpretation. While this construction – problematic for compositionality if the meaning of sentences emerge from the meaning of their parts – has fostered much research, the fertile data terrain that creole languages offer for its understanding is rarely taken into account. Aiming at bridging this gap, this book offers a wealth of theoretically informed empirical investigations of negative relations in a wide variety of creole languages. Uncovering a far more complex negative landscape than previously assumed, the book reveals the challenging richness that a thorough comparative study of creoles delivers.
