Book Synopsis Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly three decades, methadone hydrochloride has been the primary means of treating opiate addiction. Today, about 115,000 people receive such treatment, and thousands more have benefited from it in the past. Even though methadone's effectiveness has been well established, its use remains controversial, a fact reflected by the extensive regulation of its manufacturing, labeling, distribution, and use. The Food and Drug Administration regulates the safety and effectiveness of methadone, as it does for all drugs, and the Drug Enforcement Administration regulates it as a controlled substance. However, methadone is also subjected to a unique additional tier of regulation that prescribes how and under what circumstances it may be used to treat opiate addiction. Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment examines current Department of Health and Human Services standards for narcotic addiction treatment and the regulation of methadone treatment programs pursuant to those standards. The book includes an evaluation of the effect of federal regulations on the provision of methadone treatment services and an exploration of options for modifying the regulations to allow optimal clinical practice. The volume also includes an assessment of alternatives to the existing regulations.

Book Synopsis Drug Addiction and AIDS by : Norbert Loimer
Download or read book Drug Addiction and AIDS written by Norbert Loimer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIDS and drug addiction is a topic of great and growing concern. AIDS first appeared among intravenous drug users in Europe in 1984, three years after the first cases were seen among homosexuals. This epidemic has spread more rapidly among intravenous drug users than in any other risk group. The high rates of HIV-1 seroprevalence among drug users in France, Italy, and Spain account for 85% of the total number of AIDS in intravenous drug users in Europe. It is anticipated that HIV-infected drug users will soon place a heavy burden on both drug treatment facilities and specialized health care units. The HIV-1 epidemic will also cross the former iron curtain. This contribution covers the wide and complex scene of drug problems and addiction as a whole. It gives researchers an opportunity to obtain background information on the spread of HIV and AIDS among intravenous drug users as well as on the clinical and psychological effects of HIV-1 infection and AIDS in Europe. The topics reviewed include surveys of intravenous drug use, HIV prevalence, detoxification, risk reduction, changing health behaviors, evaluating AIDS interventions and the impact of methadone maintenance treatment. This monograph will be of value to all clinicians, researchers, and policy makers who are concerned with the connection between intravenous drug use and AIDS.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Modern Pharmaceutical Analysis by : Satinder Ahuja
Download or read book Handbook of Modern Pharmaceutical Analysis written by Satinder Ahuja and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the role modern pharmaceutical analysis plays in the development of new drugs. Detailed information is provided as to how the quality of drug products is assured from the point of discovery until the patient uses the drug. Coverage includes state-of-the-art topics such as analytics for combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput screening, formulation development, stability studies, international regulatory aspects and documentation, and future technologies that are likely to impact the field. Emphasis is placed on current, easy-to-follow methods that readers can apply in their laboratories. No book has effectively replaced the very popular text, Pharmaceutical Analysis, that was edited in the 1960s by Tak Higuchi. This book will fill that gap with an up-to-date treatment that is both handy and authoritative.
