Book Synopsis A Matter of Honour by : Zachary Twamley
Download or read book A Matter of Honour written by Zachary Twamley and published by Zachary Twamley. This book was released on 2022-02-13 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 4 August 1914, Britain declared war on Germany, and entered the First World War. It may be tempting to view the conflict as inevitable, or to see British intervention as unavoidable, but the truth was not so simple. Britons had long loathed the prospect of a continental war, and were assured that their nation had a free hand in Europe. Yet, in the first days of August, the debate abruptly changed. This was not simply a question of war, the British Government insisted. Instead, it was a matter of honour. If Britain stayed neutral, her friends would never trust her again; the country’s prestige would plummet; the national honour would be destroyed. ‘National honour,’ David Lloyd George proclaimed, ‘is a reality, and any nation that disregards it is doomed!’ What did these ideas mean, and why did they resonate so effectively with the British public? As Twamley details in this study – based on his award-winning masters’ dissertation – the importance of national honour to the decision-makers of 1914 has been largely overlooked. It is now time to address such shortcomings in the debate, and to place Britain’s pivotal decision for war in its proper cultural and ideological context.
Book Synopsis The Balkan Wars from Contemporary Perception to Historic Memory by : Katrin Boeckh
Download or read book The Balkan Wars from Contemporary Perception to Historic Memory written by Katrin Boeckh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the historial role of the Balkan Wars. In Eastern Europe, the two Balkan Wars of 1912/13 had greater importance than the First World War for the construction of nations and states. This volume shows how these “short” wars profoundly changed the sociopolitical situation in the Balkans, with consequences that are still felt today. More than one hundred years later, the successors of the belligerent states in Southeastern Europe memorialize the wars as heroic highlights of their respective pasts. Furthermore, the metaphor that the Balkans were Europe’s “powder keg”, perpetuated at the beginning of the twentieth century in the face of these wars, was reactivated in both the West and the East up through the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. The authors entangle the hitherto exclusive national master narratives and analyse them cogently and trenchantly for an international readership. They make an indispensable contribution to the proper integration of the Balkan Wars into the European historical memory of twentieth-century warfare.

Book Synopsis War and Geopolitics in Interwar Manchuria by : Chi Man Kwong
Download or read book War and Geopolitics in Interwar Manchuria written by Chi Man Kwong and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In War and Geopolitics in Interwar Manchuria Kwong Chi Man revisits the civil wars in China (1925-1928) from the perspective of the often-overlooked "warlords," who fought against the joint forces of the Nationalist and Communist parties. In particular, this work focuses on Zhang Zuolin, the leader of the "Fengian Clique" who was sometimes seen as the representative of the Japanese interest in Manchuria. Using primary and secondary sources from China, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, this work tries to revisit the wars during the period from international, political, military, and economic-financial perspectives. It sheds new light on Zhang Zuolin's decision to fight against the Nationalists and the Communists and offers an alternative explanation to the Nationalists (temporary) victory by revealing the central importance of geopolitics in the civil wars in China during the interwar period.
Book Synopsis On Behalf of the Emperor, On Behalf of the Fatherland by : Jussi Jalonen
Download or read book On Behalf of the Emperor, On Behalf of the Fatherland written by Jussi Jalonen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jussi Jalonen’s On Behalf of the Emperor, On Behalf of the Fatherland approaches the Russian suppression of the Polish Uprising in 1830-1831 from a new transnational perspective. The Russian mobilization involved people from the farthest reaches of the Empire, and one notable group was the Finnish Battalion of the Imperial Guard. For the Finnish elites, the war was a demonstration of loyalty to the Tsar, and the service of young Finnish gentlemen in the Russian Guards produced a sense of militarized patriotism. Relying on a rich variety of original sources, this study places the campaign in Poland in the context of the development of Finnish national awareness, providing a unique portrayal of 19th century war experience and nationalism.
Book Synopsis Echoes of Success: Identity and the Highland Regiments by : Ian Stuart Kelly
Download or read book Echoes of Success: Identity and the Highland Regiments written by Ian Stuart Kelly and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Echoes of Success, Ian Stuart Kelly uses new information about late Victorian Scottish Highland battalions to provide new insights into how groups identify themselves, and pass that sense on to successive generations of soldiers. Kelly applies concepts from organisational theory (the study of how organisations function) to demonstrate how soldiers’ experiences create a ‘blueprint’ of expected behaviours and thought patterns that contribute to their battalion’s continued success. This model manages the interplay between public perception and actual life experiences more effectively than current approaches to understanding identity. Also, Kelly’s primary research offers a more certain description of soldiers’ life, faith, education, and discipline than has previously been available.
Book Synopsis "Execute against Japan" by : Joel Ira Holwitt
Download or read book "Execute against Japan" written by Joel Ira Holwitt and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “ . . . until now how the Navy managed to instantaneously move from the overt legal restrictions of the naval arms treaties that bound submarines to the cruiser rules of the eighteenth century to a declaration of unrestricted submarine warfare against Japan immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor has never been explained. Lieutenant Holwitt has dissected this process and has created a compelling story of who did what, when, and to whom.”—The Submarine Review “Execute against Japan should be required reading for naval officers (especially in submarine wardrooms), as well as for anyone interested in history, policy, or international law.”—Adm. James P. Wisecup, President, US Naval War College (for Naval War College Review) “Although the policy of unrestricted air and submarine warfare proved critical to the Pacific war’s course, this splendid work is the first comprehensive account of its origins—illustrating that historians have by no means exhausted questions about this conflict.”—World War II Magazine “US Navy submarine officer Joel Ira Holwitt has performed an impressive feat with this book. . . . Holwitt is to be commended for not shying away from moral judgments . . . This is a superb book that fully explains how the United States came to adopt a strategy regarded by many as illegal and tantamount to ‘terror’.”—Military Review
Book Synopsis McClellan and the Union High Command, 1861-1863 by : Jeffrey W. Green
Download or read book McClellan and the Union High Command, 1861-1863 written by Jeffrey W. Green and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Washington's proximity to the Confederate capital of Richmond, Union military operations in the first two years of the Civil War focused mainly on the Eastern Theater, where General McClellan commanded the Army of the Potomac. McClellan's "On to Richmond" battle cry dominated strategic thinking in the high command. When he failed and was sacked by President Lincoln, a coterie of senior officers sought his return. This re-examination of the high command and McClellan's war in the East provides a broader understanding of the Union's inability to achieve victory in the first two years, and takes the debate about the Union's leadership into new areas.
Book Synopsis Combat and Morale in the North African Campaign by : Jonathan Fennell
Download or read book Combat and Morale in the North African Campaign written by Jonathan Fennell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military professionals and theorists have long understood the relevance of morale in war. Montgomery, the victor at El Alamein, said, following the battle, that 'the more fighting I see, the more I am convinced that the big thing in war is morale'. Jonathan Fennell, in examining the North African campaign through the lens of morale, challenges conventional explanations for Allied success in one of the most important and controversial campaigns in British and Commonwealth history. He introduces new sources, notably censorship summaries of soldiers' mail, and an innovative methodology that assesses troop morale not only on the evidence of personal observations and official reports but also on contemporaneously recorded rates of psychological breakdown, sickness, desertion and surrender. He shows for the first time that a major morale crisis and stunning recovery decisively affected Eighth Army's performance during the critical battles on the Gazala and El Alamein lines in 1942.
