The contributions cover a variety of topics in particle physics, astroparticle physics, cosmology and related areas from both experimental and theoretical perspectives, namely (1) Neutrino Physics, (2) Standard Model Physics (including Electroweak, Flavour Physics), (3) Beyond Standard Model Physics, (4) Heavy Ion Physics & QCD (Quantum Chromodynamics), (5) Particle Astrophysics & Cosmology, (6) Future Experiments and Detector Development, (7) Formal Theory, and (8) Societal Applications: Medical Physics, Imaging, etc. The DAE-BRNS High Energy Physics Symposium, widely considered to be one of the leading symposiums in the field of Elementary Particle Physics, is held every other year in India and supported by the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), India. As many as 400 physicists and researchers attended the 22nd Symposium to discuss the latest advances in the field. A poster session was also organized to highlight the work and findings of young researchers. Bringing together the essential content, the book offers a valuable resource for both beginning and advanced researchers in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium was dedicated to the discussion of advances in the applications of physics in both clinical practice and in research. Recognized specialists were invited to present topics related to their current professional and research interest. In addition, a poster session and short seminars were held, mainly for works in progress. The rapid growth of medical physics in Mexico brought the idea of organizing a symposium whose purpose was to encourage interest in both research and hospital practice as well as to provide a forum for interchange of information and ideas. All papers were peer reviewed. Topics include: detectors for imaging applications, dosimetry, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography nuclear medicine, phase contrast radiography, and radiotherapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium was held in honour of Yuri Oganessian for his laurea honoris causa conferred by the University of Messina, and to celebrate Giorgio Giardina''s 60th birthday. The aim of the symposium was to focus on the new projects and new lines of research in nuclear physics that will be developed in the main laboratories and research centres during the next 10-20 years. The main emphasis was on the discussion (from both the experimental and theoretical viewpoints) of properties of nuclei under extreme conditions (at large mass numbers, at large isospin, at high temperature, and at nuclear densities far from equilibrium), by investigating nuclear collisions from low to relativistic energies. This proceedings volume is a collection of all the invited talks of the plenary sessions and oral contributions given by the speakers at the parallel sessions.

Book Synopsis Nuclear Physics with Polarized Particles by : Hans Paetz gen. Schieck
Download or read book Nuclear Physics with Polarized Particles written by Hans Paetz gen. Schieck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurement of spin-polarization observables in reactions of nuclei and particles is of great utility and advantage when the effects of single-spin sub-states are to be investigated. Indeed, the unpolarized differential cross-section encompasses the averaging over the spin states of the particles, and thus loses details of the interaction process. This introductory text combines, in a single volume, course-based lecture notes on spin physics and on polarized-ion sources with the aim of providing a concise yet self-contained starting point for newcomers to the field, as well as for lecturers in search of suitable material for their courses and seminars. A significant part of the book is devoted to introducing the formal theory—a description of polarization and of nuclear reactions with polarized particles. The remainder of the text describes the physical basis of methods and devices necessary to perform experiments with polarized particles and to measure polarization and polarization effects in nuclear reactions. The book concludes with a brief review of modern applications in medicine and fusion energy research. For reasons of conciseness and of the pedagogical aims of this volume, examples are mainly taken from low-energy installations such as tandem Van de Graaff laboratories, although the emphasis of present research is shifting to medium- and high-energy nuclear physics. Consequently, this volume is restricted to describing non-relativistic processes and focuses on the energy range from astrophysical energies (a few keV) to tens of MeV. It is further restricted to polarimetry of hadronic particles.

Book Synopsis Particle and Astroparticle Physics by : Utpal Sarkar
Download or read book Particle and Astroparticle Physics written by Utpal Sarkar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From superstring theory to models with extra dimensions to dark matter and dark energy, a range of theoretically stimulating ideas have evolved for physics beyond the standard model. These developments have spawned a new area of physics that centers on the interplay between particle physics and cosmology—astroparticle physics. Providing the necessary theoretical background, Particle and Astroparticle Physics clearly presents the many recent advances that have occurred in these fields. Divided into five parts, the book begins with discussions on group and field theories. The second part summarizes the standard model of particle physics and includes some extensions to the model, such as neutrino masses and CP violation. The next section focuses on grand unified theories and supersymmetry. The book then discusses the general theory of relativity, higher dimensional theories of gravity, and superstring theory. It also introduces various novel ideas and models with extra dimensions and low-scale gravity. The last part of the book deals with astroparticle physics. After an introduction to cosmology, it covers several specialized topics, including baryogenesis, dark matter, dark energy, and brane cosmology. With numerous equations and detailed references, this lucid book explores the new physics beyond the standard model, showing that particle and astroparticle physics will together reveal unique insights in the next era of physics.

Book Synopsis Positrons in Solids by : P. Hautojärvi
Download or read book Positrons in Solids written by P. Hautojärvi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In condensed matter initially fast positrons annihilate after having reached equi librium with the surroundings. The interaction of positrons with matter is governed by the laws of ordinary quantum mechanics. Field theory and antiparticle properties enter only in the annihilation process leading to the emergence of energetic photons. The monitoring of annihilation radiation by nuclear spectroscopic methods provides valuable information on the electron-positron system which can directly be related to the electronic structure of the medium. Since the positron is a positive electron its behavior in matter is especially interesting to solid-state and atomic physi cists. The small mass quarantees that the positron is really a quantum mechanical particle and completely different from any other particles and atoms. Positron physics started about 25 years ago but discoveries of new features in its interac tion with matter have maintained continuous interest and increasing activity in the field. Nowadays it is becoming part of the "stock-in-trade" of experimental physics.
