Book excerpt: This volume is based on the contributions to the International Workshop on the Web and Databases (WebDB’98), held in Valencia, Spain, March 27 and 28, 1998, in conjunction with the Sixth International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT’98). In response to the workshop call for papers, 37 manuscripts were submitted to the program committee. The review process was conducted entirely by- mail. While the quality of submissions was generally high, only 16 papers could be accepted for presentation within the limited time allowed by the workshop schedule. Authors of workshop papers were invited to submit extended versions oftheirpapersforpublicationinthesepost-workshopproceedings.The13papers appearing in this volume were submitted and selected after a second round of reviews. We would like to thank the program committee of WebDB’98, all those who submitted their work, all additional reviewers, and the conference o?cials of EBDT’98 for their invaluable support. Special thanks go to Paolo Merialdo, who actively participated in the organization of the workshop.

Book excerpt: One of the grand challenges in our digital world are the large, complex and often weakly structured data sets, and massive amounts of unstructured information. This “big data” challenge is most evident in biomedical informatics: the trend towards precision medicine has resulted in an explosion in the amount of generated biomedical data sets. Despite the fact that human experts are very good at pattern recognition in dimensions of = 3; most of the data is high-dimensional, which makes manual analysis often impossible and neither the medical doctor nor the biomedical researcher can memorize all these facts. A synergistic combination of methodologies and approaches of two fields offer ideal conditions towards unraveling these problems: Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) and Knowledge Discovery/Data Mining (KDD), with the goal of supporting human capabilities with machine learning./ppThis state-of-the-art survey is an output of the HCI-KDD expert network and features 19 carefully selected and reviewed papers related to seven hot and promising research areas: Area 1: Data Integration, Data Pre-processing and Data Mapping; Area 2: Data Mining Algorithms; Area 3: Graph-based Data Mining; Area 4: Entropy-Based Data Mining; Area 5: Topological Data Mining; Area 6 Data Visualization and Area 7: Privacy, Data Protection, Safety and Security.

Book excerpt: The field of database security has expanded greatly, with the rapid development of global inter-networked infrastructure. Databases are no longer stand-alone systems accessible only to internal users of organizations. Today, businesses must allow selective access from different security domains. New data services emerge every day, bringing complex challenges to those whose job is to protect data security. The Internet and the web offer means for collecting and sharing data with unprecedented flexibility and convenience, presenting threats and challenges of their own. This book identifies and addresses these new challenges and more, offering solid advice for practitioners and researchers in industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Web is the nervous system of information society. As such, it has a pervasive influence on our daily lives. And yet, in some ways the Web does not have a high MIQ (Machine IQ). What can be done to enhance it? This is the leitmotif of "Intelligent Exploration of the Web," (lEW)--a collection of articles co-edited by Drs. Szczepaniak, Segovia, Kacprzyk and, to a small degree, myself. The articles that comprise lEW address many basic problems ranging from structure analysis of Internet documents and Web dialogue management to intelligent Web agents for extraction of information, and bootstrapping an ontology-based information extraction system. Among the basic problems, one that stands out in importance is the problem of search. Existing search engines have many remarkable capabilities. But what is not among them is the deduction capability--the capability to answer a query by drawing on information which resides in various parts of the knowledge base. An example of a query might be "How many Ph.D. degrees in computer science were granted by European universities in 1996?" No existing search engine is capable of dealing with queries of comparable or even much lower complexity. Basically, what we would like to do is to add deduction capability to a search engine, with the aim of transforming it into a question-answering system, or a QI A system, for short. This is a problem that is of major importance and a challenge that is hard to meet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data warehouses differ significantly from traditional transaction-oriented operational database applications. Indexing techniques and index structures applied in the transaction-oriented context are not feasible for data warehouses. This work develops specific heuristic indexing techniques which process range queries on aggregated data more efficiently than those traditionally used in transaction-oriented systems. The book presents chapters on: - the state of the art in data warehouse research - data storage and index structures - finding optimal tree-based index structures - aggregated data in tree-based index structures - performance models for tree-based index structures - and techniques for comparing index structures.

OLAP systems usually need to meet two conflicting goals. First, the sensitive data stored in underlying data warehouses must be kept secret. Second, analytical queries about the data must be allowed for decision support purposes. The main challenge is that sensitive data can be inferred from answers to seemingly innocent aggregations of the data. This volume reviews a series of methods that can precisely answer data cube-style OLAP, regarding sensitive data while provably preventing adversaries from inferring data.
