Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland: Vols. 15-18; 1900-1904 Thirteen Council Meetings have been held during the year. The attendance of officers will be found in Appendix A. Ten Ordinary Meetings of Members have been held, and the attendance has been very satisfactory. A list of the papers read at these meetings is given in Appendix B. In former years one of the most interesting features of these meetings was the exhibition of specimens, models, etc., but the Council regret that during the past two sessions very little has been done in this direction, and would urge members to endeavour to renew this instructive custom. In July last, instead of the Ordinary Meeting, a Scientific Conversazione was held, to which one thousand invitations were issued, resulting in an attendance of between 700 and 800 persons. The whole of the rooms of the College were occupied for lectures and displays of scientific apparatus. It proved a complete success, and reflected great credit on all those who assisted and on the Committee of Management. In March last, Vol. XIV. Of the Proceedings, containing the papers read during the 1898 session, was published and distributed. A list of the new members (33) will be found in Appendix C. This number has not been reached for many years past. The Council regret that since the last Annual Meeting death has deprived the Society of two members, viz. Mr. Othman Blakey, who died about a month after his election as a member; and Mr. James Thorpe, a very old member, who did valuable work as Hon. Secretary of the Philosophical Society of Queensland, with which this Society was incorporated in 1884. The Queensland Volume of the International Catalogue of Scientific Literature which was in course of preparation when the last report was submitted, has been completed; and, through the courtesy of the Hon. The Chief Secretary of Queensland (hon. J. R. Dickson), copies were distributed in July last to those who were members of the Society at that time, as well as to a number of Institutions with which the Society exchanges publications. The Council wish to record their appreciation of the manner in which the compiler, Mr. J. Shirley, b.sc., performed this work. The copy of a letter to the Agent General for Queensland, given in appendix D., shows that Professor Armstrong, the Chair man of the International Catalogue Committee, was pleased with the publication. Book excerpt: R. H. Mathews (1841-1918) was an Australian-born surveyor and self-taught anthropologist. From 1893 until his death in 1918, he made it his mission to record all 'new and interesting facts' about Aboriginal Australia. Despite falling foul with some of the most powerful figures in British and Australian anthropology, Mathews published some 2200 pages of anthropological reportage in English, French and German. His legacy is an outstanding record of Aboriginal culture in the Federation period. This first edited collection of Mathews' writings represents the many facets of his research, ranging from kinship study to documentation of myth. It include eleven articles translated from French or German that until now have been unavailable in English. Introduced and edited by Martin Thomas, who compellingly analyses the anthropologist, his milieu, and the intrigues that were so costly to his reputation, CULTURE IN TRANSLATION is essential reading on the history of cross-cultural research.

Book excerpt: Comparative Perspectives on Communal Lands and Individual Ownership: Sustainable Futures addresses property and land title as central mechanisms governing access to communally-held land and resources. The collection assesses the effectiveness of property law and tenure models developed around concepts of individual ownership, for achieving long-term environmental and economic sustainability for indigenous peoples and local communities. It explores the momentum for change in the international realm, and then develops a comparative focus across Australia, North America, Africa, Peru, New Zealand and the Pacific region, examining the historical and current impacts of individuation of title on the customary law and practice of indigenous peoples and local communities. Themes of property, privatisation and sustainable communities are developed in theoretical analyses and case studies from these jurisdictions. The case studies throw into sharp relief how questions of land law and resources management should not be separated from wider issues about the long-term viability of communities. Comparative analysis allows consideration of how western models of land tenure and land title might better accommodate the exercise of traditional practices of indigenous peoples and local communities, while still promoting autonomy, choice and economic development. This volume will be of interest to scholars and professionals working in the fields of property law, land reform, policy and planning, indigenous law and customary law, environmental sustainability, development and resource management.

Book excerpt: High Lean Country captures the rich history and haunting character of the New England region of northern New South Wales. The authors explore how memory - of land, of family, of patterns of life on the other side of the world - has influenced the identity of New England. They also consider how the high country itself has shaped its people and their sense of regional uniqueness. In doing so, this book sets a new direction for understanding Australia as a whole. Weaving together the histories of human settlement, economic, social and cultural development, as well as interactions with the environment, High Lean Country shows how colonial settlers strived for decades to literally create a new England. It traces the story of the graduates of Oxford and Cambridge who turned their hands to sheep husbandry and developed a squattocracy, the establishment of schools and other institutions, and the cultivation of traditional arts. It also examines the early colonial bushranging period, and a history of not always friendly relations between white settlers and the local Aboriginal population. A project of the Heritage Futures Research Centre at the University of New England, High Lean Country is a fascinating study of this distinctive Australian high country.
