Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of original articles explores political and military arrangements that could lead to a more peaceful relationship between Israel and its neighbors. It advocates the establishment of a security regime in the Arab-Israeli region that would foster moderation and cooperation and reduce the chances of interstate violence, and it investigates ways to bring about such a regime. The authors demonstrate that various peacekeeping arrangements that have been somewhat successful during the Arab-Israeli conflict could provide bases on which to build effective security regimes. In addition, they address American and UN roles, arms control, the impact of water issues, and the effect of Arab culture. Contributors to the volume include Yaacov Bar-Siman-Tov, Gil Feiler, Adam Garfinkle, Aharon Klieman, Robert J. Lieber, Charles Lipson, Amikam Nachmani, Shmuel Sandler, and Gerald Steinberg.

Book excerpt: There are fewer grounds today than in the past to deplore a North‑South divide in research and innovation. This is one of the key findings of the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030. A large number of countries are now incorporating science, technology and innovation in their national development agenda, in order to make their economies less reliant on raw materials and more rooted in knowledge. Most research and development (R&D) is taking place in high-income countries, but innovation of some kind is now occurring across the full spectrum of income levels according to the first survey of manufacturing companies in 65 countries conducted by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and summarized in this report. For many lower-income countries, sustainable development has become an integral part of their national development plans for the next 10–20 years. Among higher-income countries, a firm commitment to sustainable development is often coupled with the desire to maintain competitiveness in global markets that are increasingly leaning towards ‘green’ technologies. The quest for clean energy and greater energy efficiency now figures among the research priorities of numerous countries. Written by more than 50 experts who are each covering the country or region from which they hail, the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030 provides more country-level information than ever before. The trends and developments in science, technology and innovation policy and governance between 2009 and mid-2015 described here provide essential baseline information on the concerns and priorities of countries that could orient the implementation and drive the assessment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the years to come.

Book excerpt: The marmoset, a type of small monkey native to South America, is a research model of increasing importance for biomedical research in the United States and globally. Marmosets offer a range of advantages as animal models in neuroscience, aging, infectious diseases, and other fields of study. They may be particularly useful for the development of new disease models using genetic engineering and assisted reproductive technologies. However, concerns have been voiced with respect to the development of new marmoset-based models of disease, ethical considerations for their use, the supply of marmosets available for research, and gaps in guidance for their care and management. To explore and address these concerns, the Roundtable on Science and Welfare in Laboratory Animal Use hosted a public workshop on October 22-23, 2018, in Washington, DC. The workshop focused on the availability of marmosets in the United States and abroad; animal welfare and ethical considerations stemming from the use of wildtype and genetically modified marmosets; and standards of housing and care, dietary needs, and feeding requirements for marmosets in captivity. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book excerpt: Advances in Biotechnology, Volume I: Scientific and Engineering Principles is the first of a series of three volumes and is based on the proceedings of the Sixth International Fermentation Symposium (IFS-6) held in London, Ontario, Canada, 20-25 July 1980. This volume is organized into 13 sections and contains 111 papers which represent about 80% of the total submitted. Section I contains papers on microbial cultures. Section II presents studies on recombinant DNA and microbial genetics. The papers in Section III deal with plant and animal cell and tissue culture. Section IV examines the microbial oxidation of hydrocarbons. Sections V and VI focus on continuous cultures and free-cell fermentation, respectively. Section VII examines process dynamics and control. Section VIII takes up computer applications in biotechnology, while Section IX covers process instrumentation and analytical methods. Section X contains papers on transport phenomena, mixing and scale-up. Section XI examines the design and operation of unconventional bioreactors. Sections XII covers fixed-, fluidized- and semi-fluidized bed bioreactors, while Section XIII presents studies on immobilization bioreactors. The volume also includes invited keynote addresses of Nobel Laureate, Professor Joshua Lederberg, and Professor Elmer L. Gaden, Jr. Abstracts of the round-table discussion on Technology Transfer and Economics, and on Biotechnology Training Programs are presented as appendices.
