Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine debris is a global pollution problem affecting marine life, maritime commerce and environmental quality. Scientists, policymakers and the public must be knowledgeable about the source, impact and control efforts if effective solutions are to be developed. Marine Debris addresses the origin of persistent solid waste in the ocean, from urban and rural discharges to waste from ships and the recreational use of oceans. The book identifies key issues from biological, technological, economic and legal perspectives, and gives a framework for controlling each of the main sources of marine debris.

Book Synopsis Marine Pollution by : Tobias N. Hofer
Download or read book Marine Pollution written by Tobias N. Hofer and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine pollution is the harmful effect caused by the entry into the ocean of chemicals or particles. An associated problem is that many potentially toxic chemical's adhere to tiny particles which are then taken up by plankton and benthos animals, most of which are either deposit or filter feeders, concentrating upward within ocean food chains. Also, because most animal feeds contain high fish meal and fish oil content, toxins can be found a few weeks later in commonly consumed food items derived from livestock and animal husbandry such as meat, eggs, milk, butter and margarine. One common path of entry by contaminants to the sea are rivers. Many particles combine chemically in a manner highly depletive of oxygen, causing estuaries to become anoxic. This book presents the latest research in the field from around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Mammal Ecotoxicology: Impacts of Multiple Stressors on Population Health provides tactics on how to develop a comprehensive methodology for the study of existing threats to marine mammals. By presenting a conservation-biology approach and new and emerging technologies, this work helps provide crucial knowledge on the status of marine mammal populations that not only helps readers understand the ecosystem's health, but also instigate mitigation measures. This volume provides information that helps investigators unravel the relationships between exposure to environmental stressors (e.g., climate change, pollutants, marine litter, pathogens and biotoxins) and a range of endpoints in marine mammal species. The application of robust examination procedures and biochemical, immunological, and molecular techniques, combined with pathological examination and feeding ecology, has led to the development of health assessment methods at the individual and population levels in wild marine mammals. - Provides a comprehensive, worldwide update and state of knowledge on current research and topics on marine mammal ecotoxicology - Includes coverage of both new and emerging technologies - Features a multidisciplinary approach that gives readers a broad, updated overview of the threats facing marine mammals and related conservation measures

Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the Advanced Study Institute on "Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Catalytic Solid Fuel Conversion for the Production of aean Synthetic Fuels" which was held at Ak~;ay, Edremit, Tiirkiye, between July 21 and August 3, 1991. The book includes 23 chapters originally written for the meeting by distinguished scientists an technologists in the field. l would like to acknowledge the contribution of each of the authors in the book. Their efforts have shed light on our understanding in coal science research and better utilization of coal. Three main subjects: structure and reactivity of coal; cleaning of coal and its products, and factors affecting environmental balance of energy usage and solutions for future, were discussed in the Institute and these are presented under six groups in the book. I hope that of great use to research workers from academic and industrial background. the book will be Many people contributed to the success of the Institute on which this volume was based. I take this occasion to thank my colleagues who lectured in the Institute, both for their efforts during the two weeks and their expertly prepared lecture notes that reached to me in time. The Institute was generously sponsored by the Scientific and Environmental Affairs Dh·ision of the NATO and their contribution is deeply acknowledged.

Download or read book Clean Ships, Clean Ports, Clean Oceans written by Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-09-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine debris is a serious environmental problem. To do its part, the United States has agreed to abide by the international treaty for garbage control at sea, known as MARPOL 73/78 Annex V. Clean Ships, Clean Ports, Clean Oceans explores the challenge of translating Annex V into workable laws and regulations for all kinds of ships and boats, from cruise ships to fishing crafts and recreational boats. The volume examines how existing resources can be leveraged into a comprehensive strategy for compliance, including integrated waste management systems and effective enforcement. Clean Ships, Clean Ports, Clean Oceans describes both progress toward and obstacles to Annex V compliance. The book covers: How shipborne garbage orignates and what happens to garbage discharged into the seas. Effects of discharge on human health, wildlife safety, and aesthetics. Differences in perspective among military, industrial, and recreational seafarers and shoreside facilities. Clean Ships, Clean Ports, Clean Oceans will be important to marine policymakers, port administrators, ship operations officers, maritime engineers, and marine ecologists.
