Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of several survey and research papers covering a wide range of topics in active areas of set theory and set theoretic topology. Some of the articles present, for the first time in print, knowledge that has been around for several years and known intimately to only a few experts. The surveys bring the reader up to date on the latest information in several areas that have been surveyed a decade or more ago. Topics covered in the volume include combinatorial and descriptive set theory, determinacy, iterated forcing, Ramsey theory, selection principles, set-theoretic topology, and universality, among others. Graduate students and researchers in logic, especially set theory, descriptive set theory, and set-theoretic topology, will find this book to be a very valuable reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents surveys describing recent developments in most of the primary subfields ofGeneral Topology and its applications to Algebra and Analysis during the last decade. It follows freelythe previous edition (North Holland, 1992), Open Problems in Topology (North Holland, 1990) and Handbook of Set-Theoretic Topology (North Holland, 1984). The book was prepared inconnection with the Prague Topological Symposium, held in 2001. During the last 10 years the focusin General Topology changed and therefore the selection of topics differs slightly from thosechosen in 1992. The following areas experienced significant developments: Topological Groups, Function Spaces, Dimension Theory, Hyperspaces, Selections, Geometric Topology (includingInfinite-Dimensional Topology and the Geometry of Banach Spaces). Of course, not every important topic could be included in this book. Except surveys, the book contains several historical essays written by such eminent topologists as:R.D. Anderson, W.W. Comfort, M. Henriksen, S. Mardeŝić, J. Nagata, M.E. Rudin, J.M. Smirnov (several reminiscences of L. Vietoris are added). In addition to extensive author and subject indexes, a list of all problems and questions posed in this book are added. List of all authors of surveys: A. Arhangel'skii, J. Baker and K. Kunen, H. Bennett and D. Lutzer, J. Dijkstra and J. van Mill, A. Dow, E. Glasner, G. Godefroy, G. Gruenhage, N. Hindman and D. Strauss, L. Hola and J. Pelant, K. Kawamura, H.-P. Kuenzi, W. Marciszewski, K. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse limits provide a powerful tool for constructing complicated spaces from simple ones. They also turn the study of a dynamical system consisting of a space and a self-map into a study of a (likely more complicated) space and a self-homeomorphism. In four chapters along with an appendix containing background material the authors develop the theory of inverse limits. The book begins with an introduction through inverse limits on [0,1] before moving to a general treatment of the subject. Special topics in continuum theory complete the book. Although it is not a book on dynamics, the influence of dynamics can be seen throughout; for instance, it includes studies of inverse limits with maps from families of maps that are of interest to dynamicists such as the logistic and the tent families. This book will serve as a useful reference to graduate students and researchers in continuum theory and dynamical systems. Researchers working in applied areas who are discovering inverse limits in their work will also benefit from this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Topology is a compendium of papers dealing with a broad portion of the topological spectrum, such as in shape theory and in infinite dimensional topology. One paper discusses an approach to proper shape theory modeled on the "ANR-systems" of Mardesic-Segal, on the "mutations" of Fox, or on the "shapings" of Mardesic. Some papers discuss homotopy and cohomology groups in shape theory, the structure of superspace, on o-semimetrizable spaces, as well as connected sets that have one or more disconnection properties. One paper examines "weak" compactness, considered as either a strengthening of absolute closure or a weakening of relative compactness (subject to entire topological spaces or to subspaces of larger spaces). To construct spaces that have only weak properties, the investigator can use the various productivity theorems of Scarborough and Stone, Saks and Stephenson, Frolik, Booth, and Hechler. Another paper analyzes the relationship between "normal Moore space conjecture" and productivity of normality in Moore spaces. The compendium is suitable for mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and other professionals involved in topology, set theory, linear spaces, or cartography.

Book excerpt: It is well known that “fuzziness”—informationgranulesand fuzzy sets as one of its formal manifestations— is one of important characteristics of human cognitionandcomprehensionofreality. Fuzzy phenomena existinnature and are encountered quite vividly within human society. The notion of a fuzzy set has been introduced by L. A. , Zadeh in 1965 in order to formalize human concepts, in connection with the representation of human natural language and computing with words. Fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic are used for mod- ing imprecise modes of reasoning that play a pivotal role in the remarkable human abilities to make rational decisions in an environment a?ected by - certainty and imprecision. A growing number of applications of fuzzy sets originated from the “empirical-semantic” approach. From this perspective, we were focused on some practical interpretations of fuzzy sets rather than being oriented towards investigations of the underlying mathematical str- tures of fuzzy sets themselves. For instance, in the context of control theory where fuzzy sets have played an interesting and practically relevant function, the practical facet of fuzzy sets has been stressed quite signi?cantly. However, fuzzy sets can be sought as an abstract concept with all formal underpinnings stemming from this more formal perspective. In the context of applications, it is worth underlying that membership functions do not convey the same meaning at the operational level when being cast in various contexts.

Book excerpt: From the Introduction: This volume grew from a discussion by the editors on the difficulty of finding good thesis problems for graduate students in topology. Although at any given time we each had our own favorite problems, we acknowledged the need to offer students a wider selection from which to choose a topic peculiar to their interests. One of us remarked, 'Wouldn't it be nice to have a book of current unsolved problems always available to pull down from the shelf?' The other replied 'Why don't we simply produce such a book?' Two years later and not so simply, here is the resulting volume. The intent is to provide not only a source book for thesis-level problems but also a challenge to the best researchers in the field.
