Book excerpt: The XP conference series established in 2000 was the first conference dedicated to agile processes in software engineering. The idea of the conference is to offer a unique setting for advancing the state of the art in the research and practice of agile processes. This year’s conference was the ninth consecutive edition of this international event. The conference has grown to be the largest conference on agile software development outside North America. The XP conference enjoys being one of those conferences that truly brings practitioners and academics together. About 70% of XP participants come from industry and the number of academics has grown steadily over the years. XP is more of an experience rather than a regular conference. It offers several different ways to interact and strives to create a truly collaborative environment where new ideas and exciting findings can be presented and shared. For example, this year’s open space session, which was “a conference within a conference”, was larger than ever before. Agile software development is a unique phenomenon from several perspectives.

Encompassing the management, study, planning, and design of the ways in which users interact with computers, this field has evolved from using punch cards to force touch in a matter of decades. What was once considered science fiction is now ubiquitous. The future of HCI is mercurial, yet predictions point to the effortless use of high-functioning services. The Handbook of Research on Human-Computer Interfaces, Developments, and Applications is primarily concerned with emerging research regarding gesture interaction, augmented reality, and assistive technologies and their place within HCI. From gaming to rehabilitation systems, these new technologies share the need to interface with humans, and as computers become thoroughly integrated into everyday life, so does the necessity of HCI research. This handbook of research benefits the research needs of programmers, developers, students and educators in computer science, and researchers.

Book excerpt: This book describes effective methods for automatically analyzing a sentence, based on the syntactic and semantic characteristics of the elements that form it. To tackle ambiguities, the authors use selectional preferences (SP), which measure how well two words fit together semantically in a sentence. Today, many disciplines require automatic text analysis based on the syntactic and semantic characteristics of language and as such several techniques for parsing sentences have been proposed. Which is better? In this book the authors begin with simple heuristics before moving on to more complex methods that identify nouns and verbs and then aggregate modifiers, and lastly discuss methods that can handle complex subordinate and relative clauses. During this process, several ambiguities arise. SP are commonly determined on the basis of the association between a pair of words. However, in many cases, SP depend on more words. For example, something (such as grass) may be edible, depending on who is eating it (a cow?). Moreover, things such as popcorn are usually eaten at the movies, and not in a restaurant. The authors deal with these phenomena from different points of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A How-to Guide for Implementing Algorithms and Protocols Addressing real-world implementation issues, Understanding and Applying Cryptography and Data Security emphasizes cryptographic algorithm and protocol implementation in hardware, software, and embedded systems. Derived from the author’s teaching notes and research publications, the text is designed for electrical engineering and computer science courses. Provides the Foundation for Constructing Cryptographic Protocols The first several chapters present various types of symmetric-key cryptographic algorithms. These chapters examine basic substitution ciphers, cryptanalysis, the Data Encryption Standard (DES), and the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Subsequent chapters on public-key cryptographic algorithms cover the underlying mathematics behind the computation of inverses, the use of fast exponentiation techniques, tradeoffs between public- and symmetric-key algorithms, and the minimum key lengths necessary to maintain acceptable levels of security. The final chapters present the components needed for the creation of cryptographic protocols and investigate different security services and their impact on the construction of cryptographic protocols. Offers Implementation Comparisons By examining tradeoffs between code size, hardware logic resource requirements, memory usage, speed and throughput, power consumption, and more, this textbook provides students with a feel for what they may encounter in actual job situations. A solutions manual is available to qualified instructors with course adoptions.

The heavy-weight processes of the 1980s and 1990s are being replaced by light-weight, so called agile processes. Agile processes move the focus of software development back to what really matters: running software. This is only made possible by accepting that software developmentisacreativejobdoneby, with, andforindividualhumanbeings. For this reason, agile software development encourages interaction, communication, and fun. This was the focus of the Fifth International Conference on Extreme P- grammingandAgileProcessesinSoftwareEngineeringwhichtookplacebetween June 6 and June 10, 2004 at the conference center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the foot of the Bavarian Alps near Munich, Germany. In this way the conference provided a unique forum for industry and academic professionals to discuss their needs and ideas for incorporating Extreme Programming and Agile Metho- logies into their professional life under consideration of the human factor. We celebrated this year’s conference by re?ecting on what we had achieved in the last half decade and we also focused on the challenges we will face in the near future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more transactions, whether in business or related to leisure activities, are mediated automatically by computers and computer networks, and this trend is having a significant impact on the conception and design of new computer applications. The next generation of these applications will be based on software agents to which increasingly complex tasks can be delegated, and which interact with each other in sophisticated ways so as to forge agreements in the interest of their human users. The wide variety of technologies supporting this vision is the subject of this volume. It summarises the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action project on Agreement Technologies (AT), during which approximately 200 researchers from 25 European countries, along with eight institutions from non-COST countries, cooperated as part of a number of working groups. The book is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of the emerging field of Agreement Technologies, written and coordinated by the leading researchers in the field. The results set out here are due for wide dissemination beyond the computer technology sector, involving law and social science as well.
