Book excerpt: The Fourth ECMI Conference on Industrial Mathematics took place at Strobl in Aus tria, May 29-June 2, 1989. The conference was devoted to the exchange of ideas, models and methods from various fields of industrial applications of mathematics. About 140 people from 21 countries attended the meeting. The aim was to bring together peo ple from industry and from university. In this respect the organizers were only partly successful!. The participance of about 20 people from industry shows that there is still much work to be done to increase the acceptance from this side. 72 speakers presented their results as invited or contributed lectures, or in the frame of 2 minisymposia. One minisymposium was organized by Heinz W. Engl and focused on steel processing, the other one, organized by Hansjorg Wacker, dealt with chemical engineering. These proceedings consist of 56 papers. The articles within each of the sections: Invited Lectures, Minisymposium Steel Processing, Minisymposium Chemical Engi neering, and Contributed Lectures are in alphabetical order of the first author. Exept for the contributions to the minisymposia, which clearly concentrate on the corre sponding topics, it is hard to find a reasonable classification of the papers . This, we believe, is typical for industrial mathematics and underlines the vast variety of fields where mathematics could be used to support problem solving. We would like to acknowlegde the valuable work of the referees of the articles who certainly helped to improve the quality of this volume.

Book excerpt: The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded, largely due to the driving energy of Michiel Hazewinkel on the 14th April, 1986 in Neustadt-Mussbach in West Germany. The founder signatories were A. Bensoussan (INRIA, Paris), A. Fasano (University of Florence), M. Hazewinkel (CWI, Amsterdam), M. Heilio (Lappeenranta University, Finland), F. Hodnett (University of Limerick, Ireland), H. Martens (Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim), S. McKee (University of Strathclyde, Scotland), H. NeURzert (University of Kaiserslautern, Germany), D. Sundstrom (The Swedish Institute of Applied Mathematics, Stockholm), A. Tayler (University of Oxford, England) and Hj. Wacker (University of Linz, Austria). The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry is dedicated to: (a) promote the use of mathematical models in Industry (b) educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts (c) operate on a European scale. ECMI is still a young organisation but its membership is growing fast. Although it has still to persuade more industrialists to join, ECMI certainly operates on a European scale and a flourishing postgraduate programme with student exchange has been underway for some time. It is perhaps fitting that the first open meeting of ECMI was held at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. Glasgow is and was the industrial capital of Scotland and was, and arguably still is, Britain's second city after London; when this volume appears it will have rightly donned the mantle of the cultural capital of Europe.

Book excerpt: The Fifth European Conference on Industrial Mathematics (ECMI 90) took place at Lahti, Finland on June 6-9, 1990. The conference was organised by the Rolf Nevanlinna Institute together with the Lahti Research and Training Centre of the University of Helsinki. Like its predecessors the Lahti meeting was devoted to the exchange of experience, ideas and methods from various fields of industrial mathematics. The series of ECMI conferences have clearly established an important forum of interaction between the advancing front of technology and one of its crucial development resources, modern applications-oriented mathematics. The precise title of the conferences has been the subject of some discussion and it has been argued that there is no such area which can be labelled as "industrial mathematics". This is certainly true if one thinks only in terms of the range of ideas, theorems, methods and algorithms constituting mathematics all of which may be applied. However with another viewpoint industrial mathematics is not a collection of topics but refers to the interactive process in which mathematics, the science, meets the real world of applications. Ideally this interaction involves both good mathematics and technological advance. The computer revolution has created a new era in technology with the increased computational capability to simulate complex industrial processes, devices, and other technolog making it possible ical systems. This simulation depends on mathematical modelling and analysis and these techniques, sometimes ingenious but often quite routine, have provided a powerful tool for industrial scientists and creative research management.

Book excerpt: The sixth European Conference on Mathematics in Industry (ECMI 91) took place at Limerick, Ireland during August 27-31, 1991. This series of ECMI Conferences is clearly satisfying the need to provide a forum, in a European wide context, for the presentation of material related to the application of mathematics to industrial problems. The result, at Limerick, was the presence of approximately 170 delegates representing most countries of Western and Eastern Europe (with a small number from the U. S. and Canada) participating in this information exchange on a wide range of types of problems. The only identifiable common characteristic of the presentations was the element of application of mathematics to an industrially related problem. The conference programme consisted of 8 invited lectures with approximately 80 contributed papers. These proceedings consist of 7 invited lectures and 63 contributed papers. The range of topics is very wide including areas such as optical fibres, biomechanics, electric power optimization, heat conduction, cryptography, catalytic reactors, dynamics of non-Newtonian fluids, fluid dynamics in a variety of applications, continuing education, epidemiology, numerical methods and software, optimal control, robotics etc. It is not possible to group the presentations under identifiable topic areas and the contents have therefore been organized in sections devoted to the invited lectures and the contributed papers. Within the contributed papers there are two small subsections devoted to (a) industrial design and (b) mathematical education for industry. In each section papers are listed in alphabetical order by name of first author.

Book excerpt: This book addresses mathematics in a wide variety of applications, ranging from problems in electronics, energy and the environment, to mechanics and mechatronics. Using the classification system defined in the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation H2020, several of the topics covered belong to the challenge climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials; and some to health, demographic change and wellbeing; while others belong to Europe in a changing world – inclusive, innovative and reflective societies. The 19th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry, ECMI2016, was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain in June 2016. The proceedings of this conference include the plenary lectures, ECMI awards and special lectures, mini-symposia (including the description of each mini-symposium) and contributed talks. The ECMI conferences are organized by the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry with the aim of promoting interaction between academy and industry, leading to innovation in both fields and providing unique opportunities to discuss the latest ideas, problems and methodologies, and contributing to the advancement of science and technology. They also encourage industrial sectors to propose challenging problems where mathematicians can provide insights and fresh perspectives. Lastly, the ECMI conferences are one of the main forums in which significant advances in industrial mathematics are presented, bringing together prominent figures from business, science and academia to promote the use of innovative mathematics in industry.

Book excerpt: Designing complex integrated circuits relies heavily on mathematical methods and calls for suitable simulation and optimization tools. The current design approach involves simulations and optimizations in different physical domains (device, circuit, thermal, electromagnetic) and in a range of electrical engineering disciplines (logic, timing, power, crosstalk, signal integrity, system functionality). COMSON was a Marie Curie Research Training Network created to meet these new scientific and training challenges by (a) developing new descriptive models that take these mutual dependencies into account, (b) combining these models with existing circuit descriptions in new simulation strategies and (c) developing new optimization techniques that will accommodate new designs. The book presents the main project results in the fields of PDAE modeling and simulation, model order reduction techniques and optimization, based on merging the know-how of three major European semiconductor companies with the combined expertise of university groups specialized in developing suitable mathematical models, numerical schemes and e-learning facilities. In addition, a common Demonstrator Platform for testing mathematical methods and approaches was created to assess whether they are capable of addressing the industry’s problems, and to educate young researchers by providing hands-on experience with state-of-the-art problems.

Book excerpt: "Mathematics in Industry" - since the volume containing the proceedings of the 1985 Oberwolfach conference was published*), this subject has become more fashionable in Europe, America and also in the third world. The Europeans have come closer to each other: They formed a European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry, abbreviated ECMI. This ECMI supported mainly by mathematicians from Amsterdam, Bari, Eindhoven, Firenze, Kaiserslautem, Limerick, Linz, Paris, Oxford and Trondheim has become a legal entity with a rapidly growing number of members. It has organized a common, really European postgraduate programme, establishes contact between industry and universities and organizes other confer ences everywhere in the world. Industrial mathematics is a special method to get interesting problems; a special attitude of curiosity for technical or economical questions; a general rather broad knowledge in all branches of mathematics; but it always remains real mathematics. Our first proceedings contained many articles about "why and how to start". Now we are more selfconfident about our ideas: These proceedings include only exam ples of "how to do". It is a pleasure to see how many different kinds of good mathematics are applied to so many different problems from industry. Part of the selection criteria for this volume was that some of the applications of what is usually considered ivory tower mathematics be represented.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were presented at PARA 2000, the Fifth International Workshop on Applied Parallel Computing. PARA 2000 was held in Bergen, Norway, June 18-21, 2000. The workshop was organized by Parallab and the Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen. The general theme for PARA 2000 was New paradigms for HPC in industry and academia focusing on: { High-performance computing applications in academia and industry, { The use of Java in high-performance computing, { Grid and Meta computing, { Directions in high-performance computing and networking, { Education in Computational Science. The workshop included 9 invited presentations and 39 contributed pres- tations. The PARA 2000 meeting began with a one-day tutorial on OpenMP programming led by Timothy Mattson. This was followed by a three-day wor- hop. The rst three PARA workshops were held at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Lyngby (1994, 1995, and 1996). Following PARA’96, an - ternational steering committee for the PARA meetings was appointed and the committee decided that a workshop should take place every second year in one of the Nordic countries. The 1998 workshop was held at Ume a University, Sweden. One important aim of these workshops is to strengthen the ties between HPC centers, academia, and industry in the Nordic countries as well as worldwide. The University of Bergen organized the 2000 workshop and the next workshop in the year 2002 will take place at the Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo, Finland.
