Book Synopsis Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising by : Charles Forceville
Download or read book Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising written by Charles Forceville and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, research on metaphor has focused almost exclusively on its verbal and cognitive dimensions. In Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising, Charles Forceville argues that metaphor can also occur in pictures and draws on relevant studies from various disciplines to propose a model for the identification, classification, and analysis of 'pictorial metaphors'. By using insights taken from a range of linguistic, artistic and cognitive perspectives for example, interaction and relevance theory, Forceville shows not only how metaphor can occur in pictures, but also provides a framework within which these pictorial metaphors can be analyzed. The theoretical insights are applied to thirty advertisements and billboards of British, French, German and Dutch origin. Apart from substantiating the claim that it makes sense to talk about `pictorial metaphors', the detailed analyses of the advertisements suggest how metaphor theory can be employed as a tool in media studies. Context in its various manifestations plays a key role in the analyses. Furthermore, the results of a small-scale experiment shed light on where general agreement about the meaning of a pictorial metaphor can shade over into other more idiosyncratic but equally valid interpretations. The final chapter sketches the ways in which the insights gained can be used for further research.

Download or read book Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence 4 written by T.S. Levitt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clearly illustrated in this volume is the current relationship between Uncertainty and AI.It has been said that research in AI revolves around five basic questions asked relative to some particular domain: What knowledge is required? How can this knowledge be acquired? How can it be represented in a system? How should this knowledge be manipulated in order to provide intelligent behavior? How can the behavior be explained? In this volume, all of these questions are addressed. From the perspective of the relationship of uncertainty to the basic questions of AI, the book divides naturally into four sections which highlight both the strengths and weaknesses of the current state of the relationship between Uncertainty and AI.

Download or read book Mirrors of Minds written by Roy D. Pea and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is our conviction that a more productive orientation for the uses of technologies in education will result if one begins instead with the processes of education, and with the learner rather than the computer in the spotlight of inquiry. We find that the age of information makes new demands on the ways we think about education and on research relating to it. The nature of children's cognitive capabilities when knowledge-based tools are made available to support their thinking is a challenging terrain to explore. Moreover, the significance of social contexts and culture to students' learning with new technologies become all the more central to understand as the mutual influences of technology and context become apparent. This book of essays is testimony to that conviction, and reveals the plethora of complex basic issues one faces in doing research centered on the learner and the educational process rather than the machine.

Book Synopsis Intelligent Agents by : Michael J. Wooldridge
Download or read book Intelligent Agents written by Michael J. Wooldridge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-01-26 with total page 1144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume coherently present 24 thoroughly revised full papers accepted for the ECAI-94 Workshop on Agent Theories, Architectures, and Languages. There is currently considerable interest, from both the AI and the mainstream CS communities, in conceptualizing and building complex computer systems as collections of intelligent agents. This book is devoted to theoretical and practical aspects of architectural and language-related design and implementation issues of software agents. Particularly interesting is the comprehensive survey by the volume editors, which outlines the key issues and indicates, via a comprehensive bibliography, topics for further reading. In addition, a glossary of key terms in this emerging field and a comprehensive subject index is included.
