Book excerpt: This volume is an outcome of the International Conference on Algebra in celebration of the 70th birthday of Professor Shum Kar-Ping which was held in Gadjah Mada University on 7?10 October 2010. As a consequence of the wide coverage of his research interest and work, it presents 54 research papers, all original and referred, describing the latest research and development, and addressing a variety of issues and methods in semigroups, groups, rings and modules, lattices and Hopf Algebra. The book also provides five well-written expository survey articles which feature the structure of finite groups by A Ballester-Bolinches, R Esteban-Romero, and Yangming Li; new results of Grbner-Shirshov basis by L A Bokut, Yuqun Chen, and K P Shum; polygroups and their properties by B Davvaz; main results on abstract characterizations of algebras of n-place functions obtained in the last 40 years by Wieslaw A Dudek and Valentin S Trokhimenko; Inverse semigroups and their generalizations by X M Ren and K P Shum. Recent work on cones of metrics and combinatorics done by M M Deza et al. is included.
Book Synopsis Singularities, Representation of Algebras, and Vector Bundles by : Gert-Martin Greuel
Download or read book Singularities, Representation of Algebras, and Vector Bundles written by Gert-Martin Greuel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that there are close relations between classes of singularities and representation theory via the McKay correspondence and between representation theory and vector bundles on projective spaces via the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand construction. These relations however cannot be considered to be either completely understood or fully exploited. These proceedings document recent developments in the area. The questions and methods of representation theory have applications to singularities and to vector bundles. Representation theory itself, which had primarily developed its methods for Artinian algebras, starts to investigate algebras of higher dimension partly because of these applications. Future research in representation theory may be spurred by the classification of singularities and the highly developed theory of moduli for vector bundles. The volume contains 3 survey articles on the 3 main topics mentioned, stressing their interrelationships, as well as original research papers.
Book Synopsis Representation Theory and Beyond by : Jan Šťovíček
Download or read book Representation Theory and Beyond written by Jan Šťovíček and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop and 18th International Conference on Representations of Algebras (ICRA 2018) held from August 8–17, 2018, in Prague, Czech Republic. It presents several themes of contemporary representation theory together with some new tools, such as stable ∞ ∞-categories, stable derivators, and contramodules. In the first part, expanded lecture notes of four courses delivered at the workshop are presented, covering the representation theory of finite sets with correspondences, geometric theory of quiver Grassmannians, recent applications of contramodules to tilting theory, as well as symmetries in the representation theory over an abstract stable homotopy theory. The second part consists of six more-advanced papers based on plenary talks of the conference, presenting selected topics from contemporary representation theory: recollements and purity, maximal green sequences, cohomological Hall algebras, Hochschild cohomology of associative algebras, cohomology of local selfinjective algebras, and the higher Auslander–Reiten theory studied via homotopy theory.

Book Synopsis Representations of Algebras by : José-Antonio de la Peña
Download or read book Representations of Algebras written by José-Antonio de la Peña and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an original introduction to the representation theory of algebras, suitable for beginning researchers in algebra. It includes many results and techniques not usually covered in introductory books, some of which appear here for the first time in book form. The exposition employs methods from linear algebra (spectral methods and quadratic forms), as well as categorical and homological methods (module categories, Galois coverings, Hochschild cohomology) to present classical aspects of ring theory under new light. This includes topics such as rings with several objects, the Harada–Sai lemma, chain conditions, and Auslander–Reiten theory. Noteworthy and significant results covered in the book include the Brauer–Thrall conjectures, Drozd’s theorem, and criteria to distinguish tame from wild algebras. This text may serve as the basis for a second graduate course in algebra or as an introduction to research in the field of representation theory of algebras. The originality of the exposition and the wealth of topics covered also make it a valuable resource for more established researchers.
Book Synopsis Perspectives on School Algebra by : Rosamund Sutherland
Download or read book Perspectives on School Algebra written by Rosamund Sutherland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-16 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book confronts the issue of how young people can find a way into the world of algebra. It represents multiple perspectives which include an analysis of situations in which algebra is an efficient problem-solving tool, the use of computer-based technologies, and a consideration of the historical evolution of algebra. The book emphasizes the situated nature of algebraic activity as opposed to being concerned with identifying students' conceptions in isolation from problem-solving activity.

Book Synopsis Spatial and Temporal Reasoning by : O. Stock
Download or read book Spatial and Temporal Reasoning written by O. Stock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-27 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qualitative reasoning about space and time - a reasoning at the human level - promises to become a fundamental aspect of future systems that will accompany us in daily activity. The aim of Spatial and Temporal Reasoning is to give a picture of current research in this area focusing on both representational and computational issues. The picture emphasizes some major lines of development in this multifaceted, constantly growing area. The material in the book also shows some common ground and a novel combination of spatial and temporal aspects of qualitative reasoning. Part I presents the overall scene. The chapter by Laure Vieu is on the state of the art in spatial representation and reasoning, and that by Alfonso Gerevini gives a similar survey on research in temporal reasoning. The specific contributions to these areas are then grouped in the two main parts. In Part II, Roberto Casati and Achille Varzi examine the ontological status of spatial entities; Anthony Cohn, Brandon Bennett, John Gooday, and Nicholas Gotts present a detailed theory of reasoning with qualitative relations about regions; Andrew Frank discusses the spatial needs of geographical information systems; and Annette Herskovits focuses on the linguistic expression of spatial relations. In Part III, James Allen and George Ferguson describe an interval temporal logic for the representation of actions and events; Drew McDermott presents an efficient way of predicting the outcome of plan execution; and Erik Sandewall introduces a semantics based on transitions for assessing theories of action and change. In Part IV, Antony Galton's chapter stands clearly between the two areas of space and time and outlines the main coordinates of an integrated approach.
