Book Synopsis Nature Conservation in Southern Africa by :
Download or read book Nature Conservation in Southern Africa written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature conservation in southern Africa has always been characterised by an interplay between Capital, specific understandings of Morality, and forms of Militarism, that are all dependent upon the shared subservience and marginalization of animals and certain groups of people in society. Although the subjectivity of people has been rendered visible in earlier publications on histories of conservation in southern Africa, the subjectivity of animals is hardly ever seriously considered or explicitly dealt with. In this edited volume the subjectivity and sentience of animals is explicitly included. The contributors argue that the shared human and animal marginalisation and agency in nature conservation in southern Africa (and beyond) could and should be further explored under the label of ‘sentient conservation’. Contributors are Malcolm Draper, Vupenyu Dzingirai, Jan-Bart Gewald, Michael Glover, Paul Hebinck, Tariro Kamuti, Lindiwe Mangwanya, Albert Manhamo, Dhoya Snijders, Marja Spierenburg, Sandra Swart, Harry Wels.

Book Synopsis Biological Invasions in South Africa by : Brian W. van Wilgen
Download or read book Biological Invasions in South Africa written by Brian W. van Wilgen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume presents a comprehensive account of all aspects of biological invasions in South Africa, where research has been conducted over more than three decades, and where bold initiatives have been implemented in attempts to control invasions and to reduce their ecological, economic and social effects. It covers a broad range of themes, including history, policy development and implementation, the status of invasions of animals and plants in terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments, the development of a robust ecological theory around biological invasions, the effectiveness of management interventions, and scenarios for the future. The South African situation stands out because of the remarkable diversity of the country, and the wide range of problems encountered in its varied ecosystems, which has resulted in a disproportionate investment into both research and management. The South African experience holds many lessons for other parts of the world, and this book should be of immense value to researchers, students, managers, and policy-makers who deal with biological invasions and ecosystem management and conservation in most other regions.

Download or read book The Great Reshuffling written by Jeffrey A. McNeely and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2001 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the issue of invasive alien species (IAS) has important biological components, the human dimensions deserve much greater attention. Humans, with all their diversity of quirks, strengths, and weaknesses, are at the heart of the problem of IAS and, paradoxically, also at the heart of the solution. This compilation of papers delivered during a workshop on the human dimensions of the IAS problem, held in Cape Town, South Africa on 15-17 September 2000, covers some of the many causes, consequences and responses to this problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring this iconic Cape coastline (the West Coast of South Africa) and the people who call it home, West Coast Wander takes readers – travellers and home cooks alike – on a culinary caper from Yzerfontein to Doringbaai, documenting each delicious detour along the way. From heerboontjies to harders, the book encapsulates recipes both well known and newly discovered. Using a, uncluttered approach to cooking, author Georgia East highlights the unique ingredients cultivated along this coastline, transforming them into dishes filled with local flavour. Seeking out the best place to buy bread in Hopefield, discovering what sets a Sandveld Sauvignon Blanc apart and learning how the plumpest oysters in the country are farmed in Saldanha Bay are just a few of the corners covered. Combining Mediterranean simplicity with a dash of nostalgia, West Coast Wander is the definitive guide to sustainable seaside fare and a valuable addition to any South African kitchen.
