Download or read book Physical Models written by Bill Addis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 1114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical models have been, and continue to be used by engineers when faced with unprecedented challenges, when engineering science has been non-existent or inadequate, and in any other situation when the engineer has needed to raise their confidence in a design proposal to a sufficient level to begin construction. For this reason, models have mostly been used by designers and constructors of highly innovative projects, when previous experience has not been available. The book covers the history of using of physical models in the design and development of civil and building engineering projects including bridges in the mid-18th century, William Fairbairn?s Britannia bridge in the 1840s, the masonry Aswan Dam in the 1890s, concrete dams in the 1920s, thin concrete shell roofs and the dynamic behaviour of tall buildings in earthquakes from the 1930s, tidal flow in estuaries and the acoustics of concert halls from the 1950s, and cable-net and membrane structures in the 1960s. Traditionally, progress in engineering has been attributed to the creation and use of engineering science, the understanding materials properties and the development of new construction methods. The book argues that the use of reduced scale models have played an equally important part in the development of civil and building engineering. However, like the history of engineering design itself, this crucial contribution has not been widely reported or celebrated. The book concludes with reviews of the current use of physical models alongside computer models, for example, in boundary layer wind tunnels, room acoustics, seismic engineering, hydrology, and air flow in buildings.

Book excerpt: The 2022 Congress on Research, Development, and Innovation in Renewable Energies (CIDiER 2022) promotes international collaboration on ideas and dialogue around climate change solutions through research and development that leads to clean energy innovation via renewable energies. The selected papers cover both theoretical and applied research that will strengthen the implementation of renewable energy projects between universities, research centers, and private companies in Latin America.
Book Synopsis Postbuckling Behavior Of Plates And Shells by : Hui-shen Shen
Download or read book Postbuckling Behavior Of Plates And Shells written by Hui-shen Shen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-01-13 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an expert in structure and stress analysis, the author has written extensively on functionally graded materials (FGMs), nonlinear vibration and dynamic response of functionally graded material plates in thermal environments, buckling and postbuckling analysis of single-walled carbon nanotubes in thermal environments. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the author's works which include significant contributions to the postbuckling behavior of plates and shells under different loading and environmental conditions. This book comprises eight chapters. Each chapter contains adequate introductory material so that an engineering graduate who is familiar with basic understanding of plates and shells will be able to follow it.

Book Synopsis Temperature Based Stress Analysis of Notched Members by : Bela Imre Sandor
Download or read book Temperature Based Stress Analysis of Notched Members written by Bela Imre Sandor and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this effort was to develop and demonstrate a method of experimentally determining both elastic and plastic strain distributions in metallic materials. This was accomplished by recording minute temperature changes on the surface of the material as it was subjected to various loading conditions. Mathematical relationships relating these changes to the strain in the material was developed and verified. Much of the success of this effort was due to the development of thermocouple attachment and readout technique that recorded minute temperature changes (0.1 degree centigrade) at ten millisecond sample intervals. This small time period sampling assures that heat has not been conducted away from the thermocouple attachment point. The thermocouples consisting of two .13 mm dissimilar metal wires were attached to the surface 0.1 mm apart by discharging a large capacitor grounded to the specimen. The small size permits the mounting of several thermocouples in a small area. The determination of plastic zone outlines is thereby facilitated.
