Download or read book Geographers written by Hayden Lorimer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume thirty-one of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies brings together nine essays on leading geographers and their work. With its publication, the cumulative record of geographers' lives and works in GBS exceeds 460 essays. Here, the editors bring forward critical appraisals of six French geographers, and so illustrate the rich traditions of geographical scholarship in that country; of a leading Portuguese figure; a Briton who played a major role in establishing geography in modern New Zealand; and a British woman who pioneered connections between the history of geography in practice and the histories of science and technology. Geographers' lives and geography's making is wonderfully illuminated in international, national and cross-disciplinary context.

Book Synopsis Spatial Justice and Planning by : Shaoxu Wang
Download or read book Spatial Justice and Planning written by Shaoxu Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the significance of urban justice in planning research and practice, how just societies and cities can be organised and achieved remains contested. Spatial justice provides an integrative and unifying theory concerning place, policies, people and their interplay, but ambiguities about its practical bases have undermined its application in planning. Through creating and substantiating a new conceptual framework comprising a morphological study, policy analysis and embodiment research, this book crystallises the spatiality of (in)justice and (in)justice of spatiality in the context of social housing redevelopment. Like many countries around the world, social housing in Aotearoa New Zealand is an area of contention, especially at the building and redevelopment stages. Protecting community character and human rights has been used by social housing tenants to resist changes, but the primary focus on material outcomes neglects broadening access to planning processes. Compact, mixed tenure and sustainable (re)developments are regarded as the just built environment, as they enable equal accessibility to all. But there are contradictions between the planned spatiality of justice and individuals’ socialised sensory space. Reconciliation of morphological differentiations in built forms and social cohesion remains a challenging task. This book focuses on the re-examination, integration and transferability of spatial justice. It makes a new contribution to urban justice theory by strengthening spatial justice and planning. Social housing areas are expected to adapt to changing social and economic demands while retaining much-valued established community character. This book also provides practical strategies for tackling complex planning problems in social housing redevelopment.
Book Synopsis Social Geography in International Perspective by : John Eyles
Download or read book Social Geography in International Perspective written by John Eyles and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1986 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social geography has been one of the great growth areas in geography in recent decades. It has brought within geographical analysis a wide range of new subject matter that has proved extremely invigorating for the discipline, such as ethnic segregation, crime and environment, differences in residential housing and public service provision, and inner city problems. At the same time the growth of social geography has heightened geographers' awareness of social questions and given rise to the so-called "welfare approach" whereby geographers express their social conscience and call for greater social justice in the spatial distribution of social services. The social geography movement however has not been evenly spread throughout the worldódifferent parts of the world vary in the emphasis they give to topics. This book surveys the current international situation of the social geography school. It discusses the contemporary trends, the leading figures, issues of concern, and differences of approach that are now to be found in social geography around the world.

Book excerpt: The islands and seascapes gracing the Caribbean Sea have long been areas of interest and research for geographers and other scholars from around the world. The lands and waters of the Caribbean region have stimulated an extensive body of research and writing across the many fields of geography. This book collects, organizes, and presents as many of these scholarly publications as possible to aid in the teaching, study, and further scholarship of the geography of this area. Chapters are organized into the following categories: general works, cultural and social geography, economic geography, historical geography, physical geography, political geography, and urban geography. The types of publications noted include atlases, books, book chapters, articles, master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations. Entries in each chapter are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name. Where there is more than one publication per author, the earliest is listed first, and the rest are listed chronologically after the first entry. This volume is a convenient and useful collection of existing references on the geography of the Caribbean region that can assist teachers and students in both the study and research of the area.
