Book excerpt: The First Ovarian Workshop was held in June 1976; its goal was to achieve a collective understanding of current thought on ovarian follicular development and function, and to generate clear definitions of the most important areas to be explored in the future. The Ovarian Workshops quickly became a major biennial event for the community of reproduc tive biologists and their students studying ovarian function. As a young graduate student, I gave my first scientific presentation at the First Ovarian Workshop and I have attended all but one of the subsequent meetings. The Workshops provided a unique forum for the sharing ofideas with colleagues studying closely related problems. I was therefore especially pleased to have been asked to organize the Seventh Ovarian Workshop and to be given an opportunity to help perpetuate these important meetings. The Seventh Ovarian Workshop was held on the campus of the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington on July 31 and August 1, 1988. Serono Symposia USA generously financed and coordinated the meeting. I would like to express my particular thanks to Dr. L. The seminar met at the Hotel Beau Site, St. Pierre de Chartreuse, France on May 27-31, 1980. A decade seems to be a short period for a book on pathology, and yet it witnessed many important changes of concepts, along with a formidable growth of knowledge. The second edition required extensive reorganization. There are new chapters on mitochondriopathies, on peroxisomal diseases and on spongy myelino pathies. Major revisions and new additions were necessary in many chapters, for instance those on the dysplasias of the cerebral and of the cerebellar hemispheres, which were largely reorganized. The chapters on perinatal pathology were reordered and reorganized to give a more logical sequence of prenatal, perinatal and postnatal lesions. The entire text was worked over for brevity. A wealth of new references was added with the. aim of staying abreast with the literature up to summer 1988. All refer ences were double checked for errors. My gratitude goes to Mrs. Gisela Ropte and Mrs. Cynthia Bunker for their untiring, diligent help. As a result, this second edition is an essentially rewritten text. Advance in the prevention of human suffering is based on a thorough understand ing of the nature of disease. I hope that this text will continue to be of service in this behalf. Electronic submission of the abstracts made it possible to publish the illustrated Abstracts on the ISOTT'98 Web Site well before the meeting. Following the meeting, an ISOTT'98 CD was published as a digital, searchable record of ISOTT'98. The scientific program was designed with the active participation of prospective attendees, in that priority and momentum was given to the topics selected by those visiting the Web Site. Poster and oral presentations were considered as equivalently effective formats, reflected by the fact that posters were on display throughout the meeting.
