Book excerpt: Multi-media networks based on ATM LAN technology can provide integrated transmission of voice, data and visual information direct to the workstation. Such networks are of strategic importance to organisations which depend upon electronic transactions. The smooth operation of these networks is therefore of critical importance. The aim of this special theme is to investigate the state of corporate networks and provide a view of how emerging new technology will improve communications efficiency. Book excerpt: The day when fiber will deliver new, yet now only foreseeable, broadband ser vices to the end user is getting nearer and nearer as we make our way towards the prophetic year 2000. Step by step, as we move from first generation lasers and fibers to the by now common erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, looking forward to such things as wavelength multiplexing and solitons, photonic switching and optical storage, the community of researchers in optical communications has stepped into the era of photonic networks. It is not just a question of terminology. Optical communication means tech nology to the same extent that photonic network means services. If it is true that information is just as marketable a product as oil or coke, the providing of an extensive global information infrastructure may end up having an even greater impact than the setting up of a world-wide railroad network did at the beginning of the industrial era. Just like wagons, bandwidth will be responsible for carrying and delivering goods to customers. The challenge for all of us in this field is for it to function in every section of the overall network, transport, access and customer area, in the best possible way: the fastest, most economical and most flexible. New services provided by a new network that exploits the potential and peculiarities of photonics surely requires a rethinking of solutions, new ideas, new architec tures, new design, especially where electronics is still dominant, as in transport and access networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of extended versions of the papers presented at the Symposium on Next Generation Wireless Networks, May 26, 2000, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ. Each chapter includes, in addition to technical contributions, a tutorial of the corresponding area. It has been a privilege to bring together these contributions from researchers on the leading edge of the field. The papers were submitted in response to a call for papers aiming to concentrate on the applications and services for the “next generation,” deliberately omitting the numeric reference so that the authors’ vision of the future would not be limited by the definitive requirements of a particular set of standards. The book, as a result, reflects the top-down approach by focusing on enabling technologies for the applications and services that are the defining essentials for future wireless networks. This approach strikes a balance between the academia and the industry by addressing new wireless network architectures enabling mobility and location enhanced applications and services that will give wireless systems the competitive edge over others. The main theme of the book is the advent of wireless networks as an irreplaceable means of global communication as opposed to a mere substitute for, or a competitor of, wireline networks. Geolocation emerges as the facilitator of mobility and location sensitive services. The fields of geolocation and wireless communications have been forced to merge, following the Federal Commission of Communications’ (FCC) ruling that obliges wireless providers with emergency caller geolocation.

Book excerpt: WDM Networks and Systems, Network Planning and Management The demand for ever more capacity over the lucrative long-haul routes coupled with the need for higher reliability is pushing optical technology towards its limits. WDM systems allow upgrading of existing core networks and offer new opportunities for long-haul systems design towards ultimate terrabit systems. The prospect of an all-optical layer offers new possibilities for dynamic management of capacity and protection switching. Papers published in these proceedings: *Explore business opportunities for WDM systems *Highlight recent advances in key technologies such as add drop multiplexers, arrayed planar waveguides, and broadband EDFAs *Present new bandwidth management techniques *Push the transmission limits to the technology by minimising dispersion, non-linearities and intermodulation effects, and charts the way to soliton systems.
