Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this workshop was to review and discuss the electronic and chemical properties of layered cuprate superconductors. These are doped antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulators, and there is the possibility of a dynamic phase separation into metallic clusters and AFM areas. A clarification on the existence and the mechanism of such a phase separation is believed to be crucial for the understanding of high-Tc superconductivity in cuprates. On the one hand, theoretical and recent experimental indications in favor of this possibility were presented, on the other hand experimental papers expressing more skeptical views were also delivered. Related work on phase separations of chemical and structural origin was also included, followed by contributions on the question; “If phase separation is present, what is the pairing mechanism in the metallic clusters?”. Readership: Condensed matter physicists, materials scientists and chemists.keywords:

Book excerpt: This is the second in a series of miniworkshops and Adriatico conferences devoted to the exciting field of strongly correlated electron systems including quantum Hall effect, metal insulator transition, heavy fermions and high Tc superconductivity. In spite of enormous efforts made by physicists worldwide to solve these difficult problems, many important issues are still widely open and this topic remains the most active field in condensed matter physics. The review talks and reports on original research given by the experts in the field represent a state-of-the-art summary of this fast-moving field.

Book excerpt: This book addresses present problems and looks towards the future development of new ideas in the field. The series of lectures places emphasis on the theoretical development of high Tc superconducting oxide materials. Contributions include an introduction to strongly correlated systems, the basic concepts of the Mott insulator, the fractional quantum Hall effect and a review of the current thoughts on resonating valence bonds. Research techniques such as variational Monte Carlo methods, mean field theories and topological excitations are also covered. The book will be of general interest and value to graduate students and researchers involved in the study of condensed matter theory.

It is a book of personal stories about Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist and winner of half of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Walter Kohn originated and/or refined a number of very important theoretical approaches and concepts in solid-state physics. He is known in particular for Density-Functional Theory. This book represents a kind of "oral history" about him, gathered - in anticipation of his 80th birthday - from former students, collaborators, fellow-scientists, and friends.

Book excerpt: The papers in this book represent the proceedings for the International Conference on Oxygen Disorder Effects in High~Tc Superconductors, held April 18-21, 1989 at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy. It was recognized very early in the field of ceramic superconductors that oxygen plays a crucial role as far as the physical properties of these ma terials are concerned. The preparation requires special heating and cooling cycles which allow proper uptake of oxygen, relationships were found between the oxygen concentration and the superconducting transition temperature in many of the compounds and quite recently it was recognized that many (if not all) of the compounds present oxygen ordering in the intercalating planes. Moreover, it seems that the presence of superconductivity is strongly correlated with the presence of orthorhombic phases although several groups have also claimed the presence of superconductivity in tetragonal phases. Whether oxygen ordering plays or not a crucial role for the superconductivity remains to be seen. However it is clear that the ordering of oxygens and their thermodynamic properties is an interesting subject on its own right. All these reasons led us to organize a Conference on Oxygen Disorder Effects in High-Tc Superconductors in attempt to identify unsolved problems and to have an open discussion of the presently known facts.

For the very first time the number of participating countries exceeded 100, with 104 countries from all continents. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the IMO provides an ideal opportunity to look back over the past five decades and to review its development to become a worldwide event. This book is a report about the 50th IMO as well as the IMO history. A lot of data about all the 50 IMOs are included. We list the most successful contestants, the results of the 50 Olympiads and the 112 countries that have ever taken part. It is impressive to see that many of the world’s leading research mathematicians were among the most successful IMO participants in their youth. Six of them gave presentations at a special celebration: Bollobás, Gowers, Lovász, Smirnov, Tao and Yoccoz. This book is aimed at students in the IMO age group and all those who have interest in this worldwide leading competition for highschool students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The techniques presented here are useful for solving mathematical contest problems in algebra and analysis. Most of the examples and exercises that appear in the book originate from mathematical Olympiad competitions around the world. In the first four chapters the authors cover material for competitions at high school level. The level advances with the chapters. The topics explored include polynomials, functional equations, sequences and an elementary treatment of complex numbers. The final chapters provide a comprehensive list of problems posed at national and international contests in recent years, and solutions to all exercises and problems presented in the book. It helps students in preparing for national and international mathematical contests form high school level to more advanced competitions and will also be useful for their first year of mathematical studies at the university. It will be of interest to teachers in college and university level, and trainers of the mathematical Olympiads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers the lecture notes of courses given at Session CVII of the summer school in physics, entitled "Current Trends in Atomic Physics" and held in July, 2016 in Les Houches, France. Atomic physics provides a paradigm for exploring few-body quantum systems with unparalleled control. In recent years, this ability has been applied in diverse areas including condensed matter physics, high energy physics, chemistry and ultra-fast phenomena as well as foundational aspects of quantum physics. This book addresses these topics by presenting developments and current trends via a series of tutorials and lectures presented by international leading investigators.
