Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Grace Soccio. My writing could not please this kindhearted woman, no matter how hard I tried. Although Gifed and Talented seventh-grade math posed no problem for me, the same was not true for Mrs. Soccio’s English class. I was frustrated that my frst assignment only netted me a C. I worked harder, making re- sion afer revision, a concept I had never really put much faith in before. At last, I produced an essay that seemed the apex of what I was capable of wr- ing. Although the topic of that essay is now lost to my memory, the grade I received was not: a B?. “Te best I could do was a B??” Te realization sank in that maybe I was not such a good writer. In those days, my youthful hubris did not understand abouc t apacity bui- ing. In other words, being challenged would result in my intellectual growth— an academic restatement of Nietzsche’s “What does not destroy me, makes me stronger.” Consequently, I asked to be withdrawn from Gifed and Talented English in the eighth grade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ice crystals, with their myriad shapes, sizes and densities, play an important role in the formation, evolution and subsequent impact of ice and mixed-phase clouds on weather and climate. There are numerous pathways through which ice crystals nucleate, grow and dissipate. Although many of these are understood theoretically and have been simulated in the laboratory and cloud chambers, they are less well documented in natural clouds. The challenges of making measurements from moving platforms in an environment that is spatially inhomogenous and temporally unsteady, as well as sometimes at high altitudes and in clouds with icing potential makes these clouds difficult to observe. Nevertheless, the importance of ice clouds on climate and the hydrological cycle compels us to better understand ice processes through improved measurements over as broad of a temporal and geographical scale as possible. This monograph represents a collection of articles that do exactly that."-- Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Despite having little to suggest its future as an international site for science, Boulder, Colorado, rose to prominence as a center of scientific learning in less than two decades. A shifting combination of scientists and sponsors emerged in the post-WWII and Cold War era, giving rise to a landscape littered with interdisciplinary environmental science labs that would become the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and NOAA s Space Weather prediction Center, major players among the many agencies that make up Boulder s science community today. This book chronicles the town s meteoric rise from Scientific Siberia to the smartest town in America, including the characters (such as Walter Orr Roberts) the science, and the policies that shaped the AstroBoulder, home of big science, that we know today. Book excerpt: From low humor to high drama, TV weather reporting has encompassed an enormous range of styles and approaches, triggering chuckles, infuriating the masses, and at times even saving lives. In Weather on the Air, meteorologist and science journalist Robert Henson covers it all—the people, technology, science, and show business that combine to deliver the weather to the public each day. Featuring the long-term drive to professionalize weathercasting; the complex relations between government and private forecasters; and the effects of climate-change science and the Internet on today’s broadcasts. With dozens of photos and anecdotes illuminating the many forces that have shaped weather broadcasts over the years, this engaging study will be an invaluable tool for students of broadcast meteorology and mass communication and an entertaining read for anyone fascinated by the public face of weather.

Book excerpt: As the space age got underway in the wake of Sputnik, one of the earliest areas of science to take advantage of the new observational opportunities it afforded was the study of climate and weather. This book tells the story of Finnish-American educator, inventor, and scientist Verner Suomi, who, in those early days of space science, brought his pragmatic engineering skills to bear on finding ways to use our new access to space to put observational instruments into orbit. In 1959, Suomi's work resulted in the launching of Explorer VII, a satellite that measured the earth's radiation budget, a major step in our ability to understand and forecast weather. Drawing on personal letters and oral histories, the book presents a rounded picture of the man who launched the field of satellite meteorology--in the process changing forever the way we understand and interact with the weather around us.

Book excerpt: While serving as director of NOAA s National Climactic Data Center in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Bill Haggard noticed an explosion in the number of requests from attorneys needing weather data for their cases. The Center offered blue ribbon and gold sealed data certified by the Department of Commerce that could be submitted as evidence in a court of law, but government meteorologists could not be released from their full time duties to interpret this data in the courtroom. Into this void stepped pioneering forensic meteorologists, as well as Bill Haggard himself, who retired from the government for a second career as an expert witness. For a society enthralled by litigation and severe meteorological events, Weather in the Courtroom analyzes multiple diverse high-profile litigations in which weather was a significant factor. Were the disappearance of Alaskan Congressman Nick Begich s plane on October 16, 1972, the collapse of Tampa Bay s Skyway Bridge on May 9, 1980, and the crash of Delta Flight 191 in Dallas/Fort Worth on August 2, 1985, natural or human-caused disasters? Haggard s recounting of these litigations, in which he served as expert witness, show us just how critical interpretation of weather and climate data is to our understanding of what happened, and who, if anyone, is at fault. Part I provides an overview of the problem, including descriptions of cumulus clouds and the effects of ensembles of cumulus clouds on mass, momentum, and vorticity distributions. A review of closure assumptions is also provided. A review of "classical" convection schemes in widespread use is provided in Part II. The special problems associated with the representation of convection in mesoscale models are discussed in Part III, along with descriptions of some of the commonly used mesoscale schemes. Part IV covers some of the problems associated with the representation of convection in climate models, while the parameterization of slantwise convection is the subject of Part V.
