Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1891, Vol. 26 IN the Harvard Collection of Meteorites there is a small specimen of a pallas iron which is very highly prized as having the Oldest authentic record. It is the main portion of a specimen which was found by Prof. F. W. Putnam in 1883 on the altar of Mound No. 4 of the Turner Group, in the Little Miami valley, Ohio. Therefore it is entered in the Harvard Catalogue as Prehistoric. Ever since the acquisition of this Prehistoric specimen, specialists have been interested in trying to identify the main mass from which the smaller individual must have come. Figure 1, Plate I., shows the Specimen of nearly its natural size as it came from the mound. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Cathedrals of Science by : Patrick Coffey
Download or read book Cathedrals of Science written by Patrick Coffey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-08-29 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cathedrals of Science, Patrick Coffey describes how chemistry got its modern footing-how thirteen brilliant men and one woman struggled with the laws of the universe and with each other. They wanted to discover how the world worked, but they also wanted credit for making those discoveries, and their personalities often affected how that credit was assigned. Gilbert Lewis, for example, could be reclusive and resentful, and his enmity with Walther Nernst may have cost him the Nobel Prize; Irving Langmuir, gregarious and charming, "rediscovered" Lewis's theory of the chemical bond and received much of the credit for it. Langmuir's personality smoothed his path to the Nobel Prize over Lewis. Coffey deals with moral and societal issues as well. These same scientists were the first to be seen by their countries as military assets. Fritz Haber, dubbed the "father of chemical warfare," pioneered the use of poison gas in World War I-vividly described-and Glenn Seaborg and Harold Urey were leaders in World War II's Manhattan Project; Urey and Linus Pauling worked for nuclear disarmament after the war. Science was not always fair, and many were excluded. The Nazis pushed Jewish scientists like Haber from their posts in the 1930s. Anti-Semitism was also a force in American chemistry, and few women were allowed in; Pauling, for example, used his influence to cut off the funding and block the publications of his rival, Dorothy Wrinch. Cathedrals of Science paints a colorful portrait of the building of modern chemistry from the late 19th to the mid-20th century.

Book Synopsis Of the Human Heart by : Edward R. Hogan
Download or read book Of the Human Heart written by Edward R. Hogan and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Peirce was one of the principal contributors to nineteenth-century American science. He gained international prominence from his work on the perturbations of Neptune, and his Linear Associative Algebra was the first important mathematical research done by an American. He was a key figure in the professionalization of American science; and, as superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, he was an effective scientific administrator. Peirce also played an important role in the education of many American scientists, including Simon Newcomb, the most widely honored and recognized American scientist of the generation after Peirce, and Peirce's son. Charles Saunders. Peirce belonged to an impressive family of American intellectuals. The intellectual tradition in the family is apparent with Peirce's feminist mother, and his scholarly father, who wrote a history of Harvard College. The tradition finds its climax in Peirce's son, Charles, perhaps the most exceptional mind the United States has yet produced.
