Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume are edited versions of papers presented at the NATO Ad vanced Research Workshop on Environmental Change Adaptation and Security held in Budapest, Hungary, from October 16 - 18, 1997. As is evident in this volume, the papers ranged from descriptions of environmental and health issues in Russia and Eastern Europe to models of sustainable land use. This diversity of perspectives on environ ment and security is indicative of both the breadth of this new area of research as well as the varied background of the researchers involved. The discussions at the NATO workshop were remarkably animated and exciting, not surprising given the interest in the topic. I think this vitality is reflected in the papers in this volume as well. The main purpose of the NATO ARW is to foster research links among researchers from NATO countries and Central and Eastern European States, Russia, and the Newly Independent States. In editing this volume, a decision was made to keep to the spirit of this purpose and-if at all possible-include all papers prepared for the workshop. This required extensive editing and rewriting of some of the papers (and consequent delays in production). A determination was made early in the process by the workshop steering committee that the value of publishing the entire collection of articles out weighed the advantages of accepting only a limited number.

Book excerpt: Advancements and Technologies in Pig and Poultry Bacterial Disease Control provides the most up-to-date knowledge on the tools and technologies used in the economics, prevention, monitoring and control of the most important bacterial diseases in these two important livestock species. Written by international experts in veterinary medicine, veterinary science, agricultural economics and environmental monitoring, this book provides state-of-the-art information regarding the application of technology to the prevention and control of bacterial disease in pigs and poultry. It presents the most up-to-date information on the major bacterial pathogens, why they are important, their epidemiology, pathogenesis and molecular basis of their virulence. Additional sections examine how genomic sequencing addresses the development of disease biomarkers for faster and highly specific diagnosis and how next generation sequencing can identify good and bad microflora. This book will be a valuable resource for veterinarians, epidemiologists, animal scientists, technologists, and researchers studying precision livestock farming. Students in veterinary, animal science and bio-science courses will also find it useful for its coverage of diseases and monitoring tools. - Highlights crossover technologies from human to veterinary medicine, including the use of bioinformatics and genomics for disease prevention - Uses results from the EU FP7-funded ProHealth project, the largest of its type ever awarded by the EU - Examines how genomic analysis via next generation sequencing and microarray platforms can be exploited to develop novel biomarkers of bacterial disease in animals - Reports on novel environmental monitoring tools and their use in determining disease threshold levels within herds and flocks

This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Africa’s livestock keepers face many challenges, not least the widespread prevalence of endemic diseases which both undermine animals’ productivity and increase livestock mortality. Tsetse- transmitted trypanosomosis causes significant economic losses, in particular in cattle. This study analyses these losses in a spatially explicit framework for the six tsetse-infested countries of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) region: Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda. The cattle production systems of the region are diverse, ranging from pastoralism to agropastoralist and mixed crop-livestock farming. Some areas make extensive use of draught cattle or of high yielding crossbred dairy cows. Based on these features, twelve cattle production systems in the region were characterized and mapped. In these systems, the potential incomes from cattle production were modeled for a situation with and without trypanosomosis; the models looked at mortality, fertility, other productivity parameters and cattle population growth and expansion. The results of the analysis were used to generate a map of the potential benefits of controlling the disease. Estimates were then made of the costs of tsetse and trypanosomosis control using a range of techniques, namely: trypanocidal drugs; control or localized elimination of tsetse flies using insecticide-treated cattle or targets, aerial spraying and the sterile insect technique. The mapped potential benefits and mapped estimated costs were combined in order to produce a series of benefit-cost maps which illustrate what techniques are likely to be the most economically attractive in different areas of the study region. The suite of tools and economic analyses documented in this paper provide essential information to decision makers for comparing and prioritizing interventions in the region.
