Book Synopsis Pitch Determination of Speech Signals by : W. Hess
Download or read book Pitch Determination of Speech Signals written by W. Hess and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pitch (i.e., fundamental frequency FO and fundamental period TO) occupies a key position in the acoustic speech signal. The prosodic information of an utterance is predominantly determined by this parameter. The ear is more sensitive to changes of fundamental frequency than to changes of other speech signal parameters by an order of magnitude. The quality of vocoded speech is essentially influenced by the quality and faultlessness of the pitch measure ment. Hence the importance of this parameter necessitates using good and reliable measurement methods. At first glance the task looks simple: one just has to detect the funda mental frequency or period of a quasi-periodic signal. For a number of reasons, however, the task of pitch determination has to be counted among the most difficult problems in speech analysis. 1) In principle, speech is a nonstationary process; the momentary position of the vocal tract may change abruptly at any time. This leads to drastic variations in the temporal structure of the signal, even between subsequent pitch periods, and assuming a quasi-periodic signal is often far from realistic. 2) Due to the flexibility of the human vocal tract and the wide variety of voices, there exist a multitude of possible temporal structures. Narrow-band formants at low harmonics (especially at the second or third harmonic) are an additional source of difficulty. 3) For an arbitrary speech signal uttered by an unknown speaker, the fundamental frequency can vary over a range of almost four octaves (50 to 800 Hz).

Book Synopsis Acoustics of Long Spaces by : Jian Kang
Download or read book Acoustics of Long Spaces written by Jian Kang and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2002 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustics is a major concern in many long spaces, such as road or railway tunnels, underground/railway stations, corridors, concourses and urban streets. The specific problems of such irregularly shaped spaces, ranging from noise pollution in streets and tunnels to poor speech intelligibility of public address systems in railway stations are not dealt with by classic room acoustic theory. This state-of-the-art exposition of acoustics of long spaces presents the fundamentals of acoustic theory and calculation formulae for long spaces as well as giving guidelines for practical design.

Book Synopsis Ratio Scaling of Psychological Magnitude by : Stanley J. Bolanowski, Jr.
Download or read book Ratio Scaling of Psychological Magnitude written by Stanley J. Bolanowski, Jr. and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the proceedings of a conference held at Syracuse University in honor of S.S. Stevens, a pioneer in the scaling of sensory magnitudes and the originator of the method of magnitude estimation, this volume brings together the work of 20 authorities on the procedures of ratio scaling. These experts--psychophysicists, physiologists, and theoreticians--offer their views on whether or not psychological magnitudes can be measured and whether the judgments of psychological magnitudes constitute the basis for the construction of a ratio scale. Also discussed is the question of whether any single method could stand out as a potential standard technique for measuring psychological magnitudes.

Book Synopsis Game Sound Technology and Player Interaction: Concepts and Developments by : Grimshaw, Mark
Download or read book Game Sound Technology and Player Interaction: Concepts and Developments written by Grimshaw, Mark and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Game Sound Technology and Player Interaction: Concepts and Developments researches both how game sound affects a player psychologically, emotionally, and physiologically, and how this relationship itself impacts the design of computer game sound and the development of technology. This compilation also applies beyond the realm of video games to other types of immersive sound, such as soundscape design, gambling machines, emotive and fantastical sound to name a few. The application for this research is wide-ranging, interdisciplinary, and of primary importance for academics and practitioners searching for the right sounds.
