Book Synopsis Field Methods in Archaeology by : Thomas R Hester
Download or read book Field Methods in Archaeology written by Thomas R Hester and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Methods in Archaeology has been the leading source for instructors and students in archaeology courses and field schools for 60 years since it was first authored in 1949 by the legendary Robert Heizer. Left Coast has arranged to put the most recent Seventh Edition back into print after a brief hiatus, making this classic textbook again available to the next generation of archaeology students. This comprehensive guide provides an authoritative overview of the variety of methods used in field archaeology, from research design, to survey and excavation strategies, to conservation of artifacts and record-keeping. Authored by three leading archaeologists, with specialized contributions by several other experts, this volume deals with current issues such as cultural resource management, relations with indigenous peoples, and database management as well as standard methods of archaeological data collection and analysis.
Book Synopsis Artistry in Bronze by : Jens M Daehner
Download or read book Artistry in Bronze written by Jens M Daehner and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 920 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume derive from the proceedings of the nineteenth International Bronze Congress, held at the Getty Center and Villa in October 2015 in connection with the exhibition Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World. The study of large-scale ancient bronzes has long focused on aspects of technology and production. Analytical work of materials, processes, and techniques has significantly enriched our understanding of the medium. Most recently, the restoration history of bronzes has established itself as a distinct area of investigation. How does this scholarship bear on the understanding of bronzes within the wider history of ancient art? How do these technical data relate to our ideas of styles and development? How has the material itself affected ancient and modern perceptions of form, value, and status of works of art? www.getty.edu/publications/artistryinbronze
Book Synopsis Scientific Investigation of Copies, Fakes and Forgeries by : Paul T. Craddock
Download or read book Scientific Investigation of Copies, Fakes and Forgeries written by Paul T. Craddock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scientific Investigation of Copies, Fakes and Forgeries is a comprehensive guide to the technical and scientific study of the authenticity of a wide range of antiquities and artworks. It is the first book to provide a full survey of the subject of forgery from a scientific basis, examining a wide range of materials and techniques." "The demand for copies, fakes and forgeries is driven by rising prices in an international marketplace. The book examines the available new technologies and ever more sophisticated forging techniques, looking at production and distribution of fraudulent artworks. The subject is exemplified by numerous internationally based case studies, some turning out not to be as conclusive as is sometimes believed." "The book is aimed at those who need to understand the available approaches to and methods of scientific and technical authentication, be they curator, collector, conservator or scientist." --Book Jacket.

Book Synopsis Archaeomineralogy by : George R. Rapp
Download or read book Archaeomineralogy written by George R. Rapp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1 Prologue What is archaeomineralogy? The term has been used at least once before (Mitchell 1985), but this volume is the first publication to lay down the scientific basis and systematics for this subdiscipline. Students sometimes call an introductory archaeology course "stones and bones." Archaeomineralogy covers the stones component of this phrase. Of course, archaeology consists of a great deal more than just stones and bones. Contemporary archaeology is based on stratigraphy, geomorphology, chronometry, behavioral inferences, and a host of additional disciplines in addition to those devoted to stones and bones. To hazard a definition: archaeomineralogy is the study of the minerals and rocks used by ancient societies over space and time, as implements, orna ments, building materials, and raw materials for ceramics and other processed products. Archaeomineralogy also attempts to date, source, or otherwise char acterize an artifact or feature, or to interpret past depositional alteration of archaeological contexts. Unlike geoarchaeology, archaeomineralogy is not, and is not likely to become, a recognized subdiscipline. Practitioners of archaeomineralogy are mostly geoarchaeologists who specialize in geology and have a strong background in mineralogy or petrology (the study of the origin ofrocks).
Book Synopsis Treated Diamonds by : James E. Shigley
Download or read book Treated Diamonds written by James E. Shigley and published by GIA Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the material presented here was originally published in Gems & Gemology as articles and lab notes (short reports from the GIA Laboratory, formerly called the Gem Trade Laboratory) or as Gem News/Gem News International items between the years 1938 and 2007. Also included are summaries of presentations at GIA's 2006 International Gemological Symposium and Gemological Research Conference, which originally appeared in the Fall 2006 Proceedings volume produced by Gems & Gemology staff. The present work is organized in two main parts on color treatments and clarity treatments, with color photos and microimages on almost every page. Chapters in the section on color treatments cover coated diamonds, irradiated diamonds, and annealed diamonds. Chapters in the section on clarity treatments cover laser-drilled and glass-filled diamonds. Material is presented in chronological order to help readers follow the evolving areas of interest and understanding of these treatments. Some of the older material includes editorial comments to explain now-unfamiliar concepts or discuss significant development since the original publication. The book includes a poster-sized color chart enclosed in a side pocket, with color photos demonstrating diagnostic features of filled diamonds and testing techniques. Shigley is a distinguished research fellow at the GIA Lab in Carlsbad, California.
Book Synopsis The Dream House by : Craig Higginson
Download or read book The Dream House written by Craig Higginson and published by Pan Macmillan South africa. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A farmhouse is being reproduced a dozen times, with slight variations, throughout a valley. Three small graves have been dug in the front garden, the middle one lying empty. A woman in a wheelchair sorts through boxes while her husband clambers around the old demolished buildings, wondering where the animals have gone. A young woman – called ‘the barren one’ behind her back – dreams of love, while an ageing headmaster contemplates the end of his life. At the entrance to the long dirt driveway, a car appears and pauses – pointed towards the house like a silver bullet, ticking with heat. So begins The Dream House, Craig Higginson’s riveting and unforgettable novel set in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal. Written with dark wit, a stark poetic style and extraordinary tenderness, this is a story about the state of a nation and a deep meditation on memory, ageing, meaning, family, love and loss. This updated 2016 edition contains new content, with Craig Higginson exploring the background to The Dream House, his varied experiences in a farmhouse in KwaZulu-Natal and the subsequent and poignant motivations for this moving novel.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a growth in interest in studying the heart from the perspective of the physical sciences: mechanics, fluid flow, electromechanics. This volume is the result of a workshop held in July 1989 at the Institute for Nonlinear Sciences at the University of California at San Diego that brought together scientists and clinicians with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who shared an interest in the heart. The chapters were prepared by the invited speakers as didactic reviews of their subjects but also include the structure, mechanical properties, and function of the heart and the myocardium, electrical activity of the heart and myocardium, and mathematical models of heart function.
