Sessions addressed a range of empirical issues on L2 systems, including anaphoric relations, argument structure, ambiguity resolution in L2 sentence processing, L2 phonology and morphological acquisition, and acquisition of semantic and morphosyntactic properties. Topics discussed included the questions of the initial state of L2 acquisition, the nature of grammars acquired by adults, and differences and similarities between simultaneous and sequential bilingualism in children. These issues are reflected in the papers included in the proceedings.

Individual chapters have been written so that they can stand alone, giving instructors and students total control over the pace and order of study, and the book is written in an accessible conversational style, inviting engagement with this dynamic topic. Second Language Acquisition: - Surveys key studies in the acquisition of morphology, syntax and phonology - Features a whole chapter dedicated to bilingualism, tying together two closely-linked fields - Examines the role and implications of pedagogy in language teaching contexts - Employs end-of-chapter questions, concept practice and suggestions for further reading to encourage deeper engagement with topic
Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Psycholinguistics by : Aline Godfroid
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Psycholinguistics written by Aline Godfroid and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-21 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Psycholinguistics provides a comprehensive survey of the latest research at the intersection of linguistics, cognitive psychology, and applied linguistics, for those seeking to understand the mental architecture and processes that shape the acquisition of additional languages. The handbook represents the full complexity of second language acquisition across the lifespan, spanning childhood bilinguals and adult L2 learners, and is inclusive of heritage languages, early bilingualism and multilingualism, and language attrition. An authoritative selection of diverse, global, leading psycholinguists synthesize the latest research to provide a thorough overview in a single volume and set the agenda for the future. The volume is organized into five key parts for ease of use: psycholinguistics across the lifespan; methods; theoretical perspectives; the psycholinguistics of learning; and transdisciplinary perspectives. This handbook will be an indispensable resource for scholars and students of psycholinguistics, second language acquisition, applied linguistics, bilingualism, cognitive science, psychology, and research methodology.

Book Synopsis Understanding Interfaces by : Laura Domínguez
Download or read book Understanding Interfaces written by Laura Domínguez and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By combining theoretical analysis and empirical investigation, this monograph investigates the status of interfaces in Minimalist linguistic theory, second language acquisition and native language attrition. Two major questions are currently under debate: (1) what exactly makes a linguistic phenomenon an ‘interface phenomenon’, and (2) what is the specific role that the interfaces play in explaining language loss and persistent problems in second language acquisition? Answers to these questions are provided by a theoretical examination of the role that economy and computational efficiency play in recent Minimalist models of the language faculty, as well as by evidence obtained in two empirical studies examining the acquisition and attrition of two interface phenomena: Spanish subject realization and word order variation. The result is a new definition of ‘interface phenomena’ which deemphasizes syntactic complexity and focuses on the effect of interface interpretive conditions on syntactic structure. This work also shows that representational deficits cannot be ruled out in the acquisition and attrition of interface structures.
Book Synopsis Cross-linguistic Influence in Bilingualism by : Elma Blom
Download or read book Cross-linguistic Influence in Bilingualism written by Elma Blom and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a current state-of-affairs regarding the study of cross-linguistic influence in bilingualism. Taking Hulk and Müller’s (2000) and Müller and Hulk’s (2001) hypotheses on cross-linguistic influence as a starting point, the book exemplifies the shift from the original focus on syntax proper to interfaces and discourse phenomena in the study of bilingualism. It also reflects the enormous increase in different language combinations (including dialects) being investigated, and the use of new methodologies. Moreover, the volume illustrates the growing interdisciplinarity of cross-linguistic influence research, considering extra-linguistic cognitive and social factors besides linguistics. It demonstrates that the time is ripe for a more integrated approach from different disciplines such as theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics to obtain a better understanding of bilingual child acquisition. As such, it is of interest to (psycho/socio)linguists, psychologists and education specialists who study or want to learn about (child) bilingualism.
