Book Synopsis The Multisensory Driver by : Cristy Ho
Download or read book The Multisensory Driver written by Cristy Ho and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driver inattention has been identified as one of the leading causes for car accidents. The problem of distraction while driving is likely to worsen, partly due to increasingly complex in-car technologies. However, intelligent transport systems are being developed to assist drivers and to ensure a safe road environment. One approach to the design of ergonomic automobile systems is to integrate our understanding of the human information processing systems into the design process. This book aims to further the design of ergonomic multisensory interfaces using research from the fast-growing field of cognitive neuroscience. It focuses on two aspects of driver information-processing in particular: multisensory interactions and the spatial distribution of attention in driving. The Multisensory Driver provides interface design guidelines together with a detailed review of current cognitive neuroscience and behavioural research in multisensory human perception, which will help the development of ergonomic interfaces. The discussion on spatial attention is particularly relevant for car interface designers, but it will also appeal to cognitive psychologists interested in spatial attention and the applications of these theoretical research findings. Giving a detailed description of a cohesive series of psychophysical experiments on multisensory warning signals, conducted in both laboratory and simulator settings, this book provides an approach for those in the engineering discipline who wish to test their systems with human observers.

Book Synopsis Mathematics at the Margins by : Elizabeth Warren
Download or read book Mathematics at the Margins written by Elizabeth Warren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports the impact a four-year longitudinal study (Representations, Oral Language and Engagement in Mathematics (RoleM)) had on teachers and students from 16 schools in disadvantaged contexts. It offers theories with regard to the interplay between teaching and learning mathematics as teachers and students in these contexts implement a mathematics program. The data are longitudinal, drawn from 154 teachers and their students (up to 1738 students) from the first four years of school (Foundation to Year 3). To ascertain the effectiveness of the RoleM Professional Learning model, teachers were interviewed three times a year and pre and post-tests were administered to students at the beginning and end of each year. Students’ results indicated that all students’ understanding of mathematics improved significantly, with the ESL students showing the greatest gains. Their results matched the norm-referenced expectations for all Australian students of this age. This book shares the journey of these teachers, Indigenous teacher aides and students. It outlines the dimensions of the research findings that supported teachers to become effective teachers of mathematics and assisted students in becoming successful learners of mathematics. The book also draws on the expertise of researchers from both Canada and New Zealand. They share the similarities and the differences between RoleM findings and their own contexts, in order to draw general conclusions for the effective teaching and learning of mathematics at the margins of society.

Download or read book Soil Nailing written by Raymond Cheung and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil nailing is an in situ soil reinforcement technique that can be used to enhance the stability of slopes, retaining walls, embankments, and excavations. It involves installation of closely spaced, relatively slender unstressed tension-carrying structural elements into the ground to stabilize the soil mass. These elements, which are called soil nails, comprise steel or other engineering materials such as fiber reinforced polymer. Soil nailing did not gain popularity until the 1970s when engineers started to realize that the technique could offer an effective, robust, and economical reinforcing system for a variety of ground conditions. More importantly, the track record has been excellent in that no major collapses have been reported in properly designed and well-constructed soil nailed structures so far. Considerable experience and knowledge of the technique have been gained in the past few decades through systematic technical development work comprising laboratory tests, numerical modeling, physical modeling, site trials and field monitoring covering design, and construction practices. Soil Nailing: A Practical Guide consolidates the experience and advances made in the development and use of the soil nailing technique and encourages a wider adoption of the technique by practitioners. The book is intended for use by postgraduate students, researchers, and practicing civil and geotechnical engineers, who wish to have a more in-depth and fundamental understanding of the theory and practice behind the technique. It presents the basic principles of the technique as well as state-of-the-art knowledge and recommended standard of good practice in respect of design, construction, monitoring, and maintenance of soil nailed structures.
