Book Synopsis Proceedings of First USA-USSR symposium on Fracture of Composite Materials by : George C. Sih
Download or read book Proceedings of First USA-USSR symposium on Fracture of Composite Materials written by George C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1979-03-31 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current situation with regard to the use of high-performance composites is one of seeking a reliable means of characterizing the fundamental properties and/or behavior of composite materials. The employment of such materials in vi tal structural applications require criteria as part of the materials selection and design procedures. However, the principal limitation of the many currently available procedures, most of which were borrowed from the metal i"ndustry, is its intrinsic restriction to single phase materials. They cannot adequately ac count for the variations in the constituents or structure of the composite that can have a significant influence on its gross behavior. Although a considerable amount of research has been conducted in the past with the objective of under standing composite material behavior, for the most part, the research efforts tended to cover too wide a spectrum of problems with little penetration into the fundamental aspects. For this reason, the investigators in this field have long felt the need to bring together a small group of experts to review the fun damentals, discuss the problem areas, and display the current developments. The USA-USSR Sympo~~ on the f~ct~e 06 Compo~~e Mat~ was organized for this purpose. There is the additional need to share this information with the new comers to the field as well as the oldtimers. This is accomplished by publish ing the symposium proceedings contained in the present volume. A Russian trans lation of the papers in this volume will also be made available.

Book Synopsis New Materials for Next-Generation Commercial Transports by : Committee on New Materials for Advanced Civil Aircraft
Download or read book New Materials for Next-Generation Commercial Transports written by Committee on New Materials for Advanced Civil Aircraft and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of this book was to identify issues related to the introduction of new materials and the effects that advanced materials will have on the durability and technical risk of future civil aircraft throughout their service life. The committee investigated the new materials and structural concepts that are likely to be incorporated into next generation commercial aircraft and the factors influencing application decisions. Based on these predictions, the committee attempted to identify the design, characterization, monitoring, and maintenance issues that are critical for the introduction of advanced materials and structural concepts into future aircraft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bibliography contains over 3000 references, including translated items from Japan, West Germany, U.S.S.R., and other countries as well as references of original English language publications of the United States and United Kingdom. The references are categorized by specific fiber and matrix materials. In addition, many references are grouped in the general categories of compatibility studies, theory and design, testing and evaluation, application, and fabrication. A group of references to general review articles is included. The references represent the holdings of the former Defense Ceramic Information Center (DCIC) plus those of the Fibers and Composites Center (FCIC) at Battelle's Columbus Laboratories and MCIC. Book Synopsis Functional Fillers for Plastics by : Marino Xanthos
Download or read book Functional Fillers for Plastics written by Marino Xanthos and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-01-07 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the major mineral and organic fillers for plastics, their production, structure and properties, as well as their applications in terms of primary and secondary functions. Edited and co-authored by Professor Marino Xanthos with contributions by international experts from industry and academia, this book presents methods of mixing/incorporation technologies, surface treatments and modifications for enhanced functionality, an analysis of parameters affecting filler performance and a presentation of current and emerging applications. Additionally, the novel classification according to modification of specific polymer properties rather than filler chemical composition provides a better understanding of the relationships between processing, structure and properties of products containing functional fillers and the identification of new markets and applications. For engineers, scientists and technologists involved in the important sector of polymer composites.

Book Synopsis Adhesion Science and Engineering by :
Download or read book Adhesion Science and Engineering written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-11-14 with total page 2020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mechanics of Adhesion shows that adhesion science and technology is inherently an interdisciplinary field, requiring fundamental understanding of mechanics, surfaces, and materials. This volume comprises 19 chapters. Starting with a background and introduction to stress transfer principles; fracture mechanics and singularities; and an energy approach to debonding, the volume continues with analysis of structural lap and butt joint configurations. It then continues with discussions of test methods for strength and constitutive properties; fracture; peel; coatings, the case of adhesion to a single substrate; elastomeric adhesives such as sealants. The role of mechanics in determining the locus of failure in bonded joints is discussed, followed by a chapter on rheology relevant to adhesives and sealants. Pressure sensitive adhesive performance; the principles of tack and tack measurements; and contact mechanics relevant to wetting and surface energy measurements are then covered. The volume concludes with sections on fibermatrix bonding and reinforcement; durability considerations for adhesive bonds; ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation of adhesive bonds; and design of adhesive bonds from a strength perspective. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of engineering and to those with an interest in adhesion science.
