This book: Provides an in-depth examination of dependability/fault tolerance topics Describes dependability taxonomy, and briefly contrasts classical techniques with their modern counterparts or extensions Walks up the system stack from the hardware logic via operating systems up to software applications with respect to how they are hardened for dependability Describes the use of measurement-based analysis of computing systems Illustrates technology through real-life applications Discusses security attacks and unique dependability requirements for emerging applications, e.g., smart electric power grids and cloud computing Finally, using critical societal applications such as autonomous vehicles, large-scale clouds, and engineering solutions for healthcare, the book illustrates the emerging challenges faced in making artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications dependable and trustworthy. This book is suitable for those studying in the fields of computer engineering and computer science. Professionals who are working within the new reality to ensure dependable computing will find helpful information to support their efforts. With the support of practical case studies and use cases from both academia and real-world deployments, the book provides a journey of developments that include the impact of artificial intelligence and machine learning on this ever-growing field. This book offers a single compendium that spans the myriad areas in which dependability has been applied, providing theoretical concepts and applied knowledge with content that will excite a beginner, and rigor that will satisfy an expert. Accompanying the book is an online repository of problem sets and solutions, as well as slides for instructors, that span the chapters of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach, Sixth Edition has been considered essential reading by instructors, students and practitioners of computer design for over 20 years. The sixth edition of this classic textbook from Hennessy and Patterson, winners of the 2017 ACM A.M. Turing Award recognizing contributions of lasting and major technical importance to the computing field, is fully revised with the latest developments in processor and system architecture. The text now features examples from the RISC-V (RISC Five) instruction set architecture, a modern RISC instruction set developed and designed to be a free and openly adoptable standard. It also includes a new chapter on domain-specific architectures and an updated chapter on warehouse-scale computing that features the first public information on Google's newest WSC. True to its original mission of demystifying computer architecture, this edition continues the longstanding tradition of focusing on areas where the most exciting computing innovation is happening, while always keeping an emphasis on good engineering design. - Winner of a 2019 Textbook Excellence Award (Texty) from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association - Includes a new chapter on domain-specific architectures, explaining how they are the only path forward for improved performance and energy efficiency given the end of Moore's Law and Dennard scaling - Features the first publication of several DSAs from industry - Features extensive updates to the chapter on warehouse-scale computing, with the first public information on the newest Google WSC - Offers updates to other chapters including new material dealing with the use of stacked DRAM; data on the performance of new NVIDIA Pascal GPU vs. new AVX-512 Intel Skylake CPU; and extensive additions to content covering multicore architecture and organization - Includes "Putting It All Together" sections near the end of every chapter, providing real-world technology examples that demonstrate the principles covered in each chapter - Includes review appendices in the printed text and additional reference appendices available online - Includes updated and improved case studies and exercises - ACM named John L. Hennessy and David A. Patterson, recipients of the 2017 ACM A.M. Turing Award for pioneering a systematic, quantitative approach to the design and evaluation of computer architectures with enduring impact on the microprocessor industry

Book excerpt: Efficient Single Board Computers (SBCs) and advanced VLSI systems have resulted in edge analytics and faster decision making. The QoS parameters like energy, delay, reliability, security, and throughput should be improved on seeking better intelligent expert systems. The resource constraints in the Edge devices, challenges the researchers to meet the required QoS. Since these devices and components work in a remote unattended environment, an optimum methodology to improve its lifetime has become mandatory. Continuous monitoring of events is mandatory to avoid tragic situations; it can only be enabled by providing high QoS. The applications of IoT in digital twin development, health care, traffic analysis, home surveillance, intelligent agriculture monitoring, defense and all common day to day activities have resulted in pioneering embedded devices, which can offer high computational facility without much latency and delay. The book address industrial problems in designing expert system and IoT applications. It provides novel survey and case study report on recent industrial approach towards Smart City development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of Memory Technology Over the past decade there has been rapid growth in the speed of micropro cessors. CPU speeds are approximately doubling every eighteen months, while main memory speed doubles about every ten years. The International Tech nology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) study suggests that memory will remain on its current growth path. The ITRS short-and long-term targets indicate continued scaling improvements at about the current rate by 2016. This translates to bit densities increasing at two times every two years until the introduction of 8 gigabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, after which densities will increase four times every five years. A similar growth pattern is forecast for other high-density chip areas and high-performance logic (e.g., microprocessors and application specific inte grated circuits (ASICs)). In the future, molecular devices, 64 gigabit DRAMs and 28 GHz clock signals are targeted. Although densities continue to grow, we still do not see significant advances that will improve memory speed. These trends have created a problem that has been labeled the Memory Wall or Memory Gap.
