Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the International Symposium on Design and Implementation of Symbolic Computation Systems (DISCO '93), held in Gmunden, Austria, in September 1993. The growing importance of systems for symbolic computation has greatly influenced the decision of organizing this third conference in the series: DISCO '93 focuses mainly on the most innovative methodological and technological aspects of the design and implementation of hardware and software systems for symbolic and algebraic computation, automated reasoning, geometric modeling and computation, and automatic programming. The general objective of DISCO '93 is to present an up-to-date view of the field and to serve as a forum insymbolic computation for the scientific exchange among academic, industrial and user communities. Besides invited talks by Buchberger, Monagan, Omodeo and Hong, the volume contains 28 contributions, carefully selected by a highly competent international program committee from a total of 56 submissions.

Book excerpt: The field of computational learning theory arose out of the desire to for mally understand the process of learning. As potential applications to artificial intelligence became apparent, the new field grew rapidly. The learning of geo metric objects became a natural area of study. The possibility of using learning techniques to compensate for unsolvability provided an attraction for individ uals with an immediate need to solve such difficult problems. Researchers at the Center for Night Vision were interested in solving the problem of interpreting data produced by a variety of sensors. Current vision techniques, which have a strong geometric component, can be used to extract features. However, these techniques fall short of useful recognition of the sensed objects. One potential solution is to incorporate learning techniques into the geometric manipulation of sensor data. As a first step toward realizing such a solution, the Systems Research Center at the University of Maryland, in conjunction with the Center for Night Vision, hosted a Workshop on Learning and Geometry in January of 1991. Scholars in both fields came together to learn about each others' field and to look for common ground, with the ultimate goal of providing a new model of learning from geometrical examples that would be useful in computer vision. The papers in the volume are a partial record of that meeting.

Book excerpt: Resolution of Equations in Algebraic Structures: Volume 1, Algebraic Techniques is a collection of papers from the "Colloquium on Resolution of Equations in Algebraic Structures" held in Texas in May 1987. The papers discuss equations and algebraic structures relevant to symbolic computation and to the foundation of programming. One paper discusses the complete lattice of simulation congruences associated with the ground atomic theory of hierarchical specification, retrieving as the lattice's maximum element Milner's strong bisimulation for CCS. Another paper explains algebraic recognizability of subsets of free T-algebras, or equational theories, and covers discrete structures like those of words, terms, finite trees, and finite graphs. One paper proposes a general theory of unification using a category theoretic framework for various substitution systems including classical unification, E-unification, and order-sorted unification. Another paper shows the universality of algebraic equations in computer science. Fixpoint theorems in ordered algebraic structures can be applied in computer science. These theorems, or their variations, include semantics and proof theory, logic programming, as well as efficient strategies for answering recursive queries in deductive data bases. The collection is suitable for programmers, mathematicians, students, and instructors involved in computer science and computer technology.

Book excerpt: The well attended March 1994 HIse workshop in Amsterdam was a very lively con ference which stimulated much discussion and human-human interaction. As the editor of this volume points out, the Amsterdam meeting was just part of a year-long project that brought many people together from many parts of the world. The value of the effort was not only in generating new ideas, but in making people aware of work that has gone on on many fronts in using computers to make mathematics more understandable. The author was very glad he attended the workshop. * In thinking back over the conference and in reading the papers in this collection, the author feels there are perhaps four major conclusions to be drawn from the current state of work: 1. graphics is very important, but such features should be made as easy to use as possible; 2. symbolic mathematical computation is very powerful, but the user must be able to see "intermediate steps"; 3. system design has made much progress, but for semester-long coursework and book-length productions we need more tools to help composition and navigation; 4. monolithic systems are perhaps not the best direction for the future, as different users have different needs and may have to link together many kinds of tools. The editor of this volume and the authors of the papers presented here have also reached and documented similar conclusions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sixth in a series of conference proceedings of international conferences on computer algebra held in Europe. All the preceding ones have also been published as Lecture Notes in Computer Science. They contain original research material not published elsewhere, and a few invited lectures summarising the state of the art. Computer algebra is the science of using computers to do algebraic calculations, rather than the purely arithmetic calculations which we all know computers can do. These calculations may be polynomial-like calculations - one thread of the conference was devoted to polynomial algorithms - or may relate to other areas of mathematics such as integration, the solution of differential equations, or geometry - a second thread was devoted to those topics. The calculations can be applied in a wide range of scientific and engineering subjects, and in branches of mathematics. Physics has benefitted especially from these calculations, and the proceedings contain many papers on this, and also papers on applications in computer aided design and robotics, to name but a few other applications. The third thread of the proceedings was devoted to these applications and to the computer algebra systems which perform these calculations.

Book excerpt: For several years now I have been teaching courses in computer algebra at the Universitat Linz, the University of Delaware, and the Universidad de Alcala de Henares. In the summers of 1990 and 1992 I have organized and taught summer schools in computer algebra at the Universitat Linz. Gradually a set of course notes has emerged from these activities. People have asked me for copies of the course notes, and different versions of them have been circulating for a few years. Finally I decided that I should really take the time to write the material up in a coherent way and make a book out of it. Here, now, is the result of this work. Over the years many students have been helpful in improving the quality of the notes, and also several colleagues at Linz and elsewhere have contributed to it. I want to thank them all for their effort, in particular I want to thank B. Buchberger, who taught me the theory of Grabner bases nearly two decades ago, B. F. Caviness and B. D. Saunders, who first stimulated my interest in various problems in computer algebra, G. E. Collins, who showed me how to compute in algebraic domains, and J. R. Sendra, with whom I started to apply computer algebra methods to problems in algebraic geometry. Several colleagues have suggested improvements in earlier versions of this book. However, I want to make it clear that I am responsible for all remaining mistakes.

Book excerpt: Since scientific software is the fuel that drives today's computers to solve a vast range of problems, huge efforts are being put into the development of new software, systems and algorithms for scientific problem solving. This book explores how scientific software impacts the structure of mathematics, how it creates new subfields, and how new classes of mathematical problems arise. The focus is on five topics where the impact is currently being felt and where important new challenges exist, namely: the new subfield of parallel and geometric computations, the emergence of symbolic computation systems into "general" use, the potential emergence of new, high-level mathematical systems, and the crucial question of how to measure the performance of mathematical problem solving tools.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present important software tools, basic concepts, methods, and highly sophisticated applications of computerized symbolic manipulation to mechanics problems. An overview about general-purpose symbolic software is followed by general guidelines how to develop and implement high-quality computer algebra code. The theoretical background including modeling techniques for mechanical systems is provided which allows for the computer aided generation of the symbolic equation of motion for multibody systems. It is shown how the governing equations for different types of problems in structural mechanics can be automatically derived and how to implement finite element techniques via computer algebra software. Perturbation methods as a very powerful approach for nonlinear problems are discussed in detail and are demonstrated for a number of applications. The applications covered in this book represent some of the most advanced topics in the rapidly growing field of research on symbolic computation.

Book excerpt: Advances in computer technology have conveniently coincided withtrends in numerical analysis toward increased complexity ofcomputational algorithms based on finite difference methods. It isno longer feasible to perform stability investigation of thesemethods manually--and no longer necessary. As this book shows, modern computer algebra tools can be combined with methods fromnumerical analysis to generate programs that will do the jobautomatically. Comprehensive, timely, and accessible--this is the definitivereference on the application of computerized symbolic manipulationsfor analyzing the stability of a wide range of difference schemes. In particular, it deals with those schemes that are used to solvecomplex physical problems in areas such as gas dynamics, heat andmass transfer, catastrophe theory, elasticity, shallow watertheory, and more. Introducing many new applications, methods, and concepts,Computer-Aided Analysis of Difference Schemes for PartialDifferential Equations * Shows how computational algebra expedites the task of stabilityanalysis--whatever the approach to stability investigation * Covers ten different approaches for each stability method * Deals with the specific characteristics of each method and itsapplication to problems commonly encountered by numerical modelers * Describes all basic mathematical formulas that are necessary toimplement each algorithm * Provides each formula in several global algebraic symboliclanguages, such as MAPLE, MATHEMATICA, and REDUCE * Includes numerous illustrations and thought-provoking examplesthroughout the text For mathematicians, physicists, and engineers, as well as forpostgraduate students, and for anyone involved with numericsolutions for real-world physical problems, this book provides avaluable resource, a helpful guide, and a head start ondevelopments for the twenty-first century.
