Book Synopsis Global Application of Prescribed Fire by : John R. Weir
Download or read book Global Application of Prescribed Fire written by John R. Weir and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Application of Prescribed Fire provides a first-hand perspective of the various methods and ways people around the world view and use prescribed fire. It covers the logistics, constraints and social dynamics surrounding the intentional use and application of fire by humans, and demonstrates how, why, when and where prescribed fire is used in different regions. Written by international experts, the book has four key objectives: explore new techniques, ideas and thoughts on how to apply prescribed fire from a global perspective; provide regional case studies covering issues that may constrain or enhance prescribed fire projects; stimulate cross-cultural conversations about how fires function in ecosystems; and relate prescribed fire to wildfire regimes with implications for protecting life and property, as well as sustaining local fire cultures and unique fire-dependent flora and fauna. Global Application of Prescribed Fire enhances our understanding and knowledge about the application of prescribed fire. This comprehensive book will provide fire practitioners, researchers, agencies and policymakers with key ecological and managerial insight of how prescribed fires are conducted around the globe.
Book Synopsis Root Demographics and Their Efficiencies in Sustainable Agriculture, Grasslands and Forest Ecosystems by : James E. Box Jr.
Download or read book Root Demographics and Their Efficiencies in Sustainable Agriculture, Grasslands and Forest Ecosystems written by James E. Box Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-09-30 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Society of Root Research sponsored the Symposium "Root Demographics and Their Efficiencies in Sustainable Agriculture, GrassLands and Forest Ecosystems," July 14-18, 1996, at the Madren Conference Center, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA. The conference was a continuation of a series of international symposiums on root research held every three to four years. Symposiums have also been held twice in Vienna, Austria, and once in Uppsala, Sweden, and Almaty, Kazahkstan prior to the meeting at Clemson University. The sponsoring society has made a particular effort in these symposia to include root scientists from the former Soviet Union because of the importance of exchanging information on a worldwide basis. This symposium continued and promoted that effort by providing travel grants to several scientists from that region; however, funds for that purpose were limited. Therefore, in compiling these proceedings, a number of papers from scientists from the former Soviet Union and former Warsaw Pack countries have been included even though the scientists were not actually present for the SymPOSIum.

Book Synopsis Integrated Weed Management for Reduced Weed Infestations in Sustainable Cropping Systems by : Rodrigo Werle
Download or read book Integrated Weed Management for Reduced Weed Infestations in Sustainable Cropping Systems written by Rodrigo Werle and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weeds pose a major challenge to the sustainability of agricultural production systems, causing significant crop yield, economic and environmental losses. Chemical weed control tactics play a major role in modern weed management, maintaining the productivity of diverse cropping systems, reducing yield losses and facilitating conservation agriculture. However, the over-reliance on chemical weed control has led to shifts in weed communities in agroecosystems which are now becoming dominated by high competitors and herbicide resistance. Thus, weed scientists and practitioners are urged to develop and incorporate innovative and feasible integrated weed management (IWM) systems that can reduce weed infestations and environmental impacts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grassland farming in Europe was already established during the settlement of the rst farmers together with their domesticated animals after the last ice age. Since then, grassland provides the forage basis to feed ruminant animals for the p- duction of meat and milk. Depending on the ecological conditions and intensity of usage, various plant communities with different species developed, displaying a rich biodiversity. With the introduction of improved crop rotations at the end of the 16th century, grasses and legumes were also grown to an important extent as forage crops on arable land. In the last decades the importance of amenity grasses increased markedly, due to the demand of the society for new usages like landscape protection. Around 1900 interested farmers and academics identi ed the need for gra- land improvement through systematic selection and seed production. This marks the beginning of breeding and research in companies but also at universities and specialized research institutes. Plant collection started with many of the species that are still of importance today. The collected materials were grouped according to the intended use and some type of phenotypic selection was applied. Seed mul- plication of such populations was performed in pure stands and the harvested seed was marketed. Although the vegetative biomass and its quality are of utmost imp- tance in forage crop breeding, it is the seed yield potential which determines the commercial success of a new variety.
