Book excerpt: Inherited disorders of purine and pyrimidine metabolism in man lead to severe diseases. At the 2nd M}nchner Adventssymposium the state of the art as to the genetic basis, clinical aspects, and the biochemical basis has been given by leading experts in the fields concerning the following diseases: Hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency (HGPRT-deficieny), adenine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency (APRT-deficiency), hyperuricemia and gout, adenosine deaminase deficiency (ADA-deficiency, purine nucleoside phosphorylase deficiency (PNP-deficiency). All contributions of the symposium are published within this volume thus giving and overview of this most interesting field.
Book Synopsis The Year in Metabolism 1977 by : Norbert Freinkel
Download or read book The Year in Metabolism 1977 written by Norbert Freinkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the words of Disraeli, "To be conscious that you are ignorant of the facts is a great step to knowledge. " For most of us, the conscious awareness of relative ignorance is an uncomfortable aspect of daily life. New data appear in such inexorable profusion that the necessity for continuous retooling has joined death and taxes as an inescapable component of our destinies. Perhaps it is this "consciousness of ignorance" that accounts for the success of the preceding volumes of this new series. The Year in Metabolism and The Year in Endocrinology series were introduced with the avowed intention of "providing an efficient and enjoyable bridge between those who are creating new knowledge at the bedside and the professional consciousness of those for whom such knowledge is ultimately intended. " That objective seems particularly appropriate at a time when the award of the 1977 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology to Guillemin, Schally, and Yalow has served to emphasize the epoch-making advances that have characterized the recent course of endocrinology and me~bolism. For the 1977 volume of The Year in Metabolism, the previous formula has been preserved. The same internationally recognized authorities again have contributed commentaries about the progress in their areas of expertise. They have been joined by Drs. Jack W. Coburn, David L. Hartenbower, and Charles R. Kleeman, who have provided a new section on Divalent Ion Metabolism.

Book Synopsis Bradykinin, Kallidin and Kallikrein by :
Download or read book Bradykinin, Kallidin and Kallikrein written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume XXV of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology series entitled "Bradykinin, Kallidin, and Kallikrein" was published in 1970. My aim in editing this volume of the series is not to replace, but to update the 1970 edition. During the decade preceding the publication of Vol. XXV, the existence of kinins and kallikreins gained acceptance, the protein components of the system were purified and characterized and the peptides were synthesized. Even after these accomplish ments, interest in the subject has not abated, but has increased substantially. We have learned a great deal about the role that components of the kallikrein-kinin system play in other systems and about the immensely complex and intricate inter actions in blood. Directly or indirectly, kallikrein and kinins affect the coagulation of blood, the activation of complement, and the generation of angiotensin. Kinins release or modulate the actions of other agents, including prostaglandins, histamine, and catecholamines. Inhibitors of kallikrein or kininase II are employed, for example, in extracorporeal circulation or in hypertension. Kallikrein, kinins, and kininases, present in urine, were described first in 1925 and 1954, but have been ignored for decades. These substances are now studied extensively because of their possible role in blood pressure regulation. The evidence that kinins have a metabolic function is also increasing. The abundance of active components of the system in genital organs suggests a role in the fertilization process. The book is organized into chapters which bear upon these issues.
Book Synopsis Rheumatism in Populations by : J. S. Lawrence
Download or read book Rheumatism in Populations written by J. S. Lawrence and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rheumatism in Populations provides information pertinent to rheumatic diseases. This book covers certain systemic orders such as the systemic lupus erythematosus that frequently affect the joints. Organized into 16 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the history of the epidemiology of rheumatism. This text then examines the prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis in screened sample and in total population samples. Other chapters consider the relative significance of rheumatic disorders as a cause of loss of work as revealed by the National Health Insurance statistics. This book discusses as well the pathology of disc disorders, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, benign polyarthritis, metabolic joint disease, general connective tissue diseases, and immune deficiency diseases. The final chapter deals with diagnostic criteria for population investigations of rheumatoid arthritis. This book is a valuable resource for rheumatologists, physicians, and medico-social workers. Readers who are interested in the study of rheumatic diseases will also find this book useful.
