Book excerpt: In Mirrors, Galeano smashes aside the narrative of conventional history and arranges the shards into a new pattern, to reveal the past in radically altered form. From the Garden of Eden to twenty-first-century cityscapes, we glimpse fragments in the lives of those who have been overlooked by traditional histories: the artists, the servants, the gods and the visionaries, the black slaves who built the White House, and the women who were bartered for dynastic ends

Book excerpt: “A book as fascinating as the history it relates . . . Galeano is a satirist, realist, and historian.” —Los Angeles Times For centuries, Europe’s imperial powers brutally exploited the peoples and resources of the New World. While soldiers of fortune marched across continents in search of El Dorado, white settlers established plantations and trading posts along the coasts, altering the land and bringing disease and slavery with them. In the midst of a bloody collision of civilizations, the West has birthed new societies out of the old. In the second book of his Memory of Fire trilogy, Eduardo Galeano forges a new understanding of the Americas, history retold from a diverse collection of viewpoints. Spanning the end of empire and the age of revolutions, Faces and Masks brilliantly collects the strands of the past into an iridescent work of literature.

Book excerpt: Tat* is a bit of a graphic designer's curse. Walk into any design studio and you will see tat pinned to the walls or placed with loving care on top of a computer screen. Even the purist will have a secret cache hidden away somewhere. Andy Altmann began collecting tat while he was on his Foundation course, getting ready for an interview at St Martins School of Art. He'd been asked to present a sketchbook, but worried that he couldn't draw very well, he decided to start a scrapbook: "I rummaged through the drawers at home and found some football cards from the late 1960s and early '70s (plenty of Georgie Best), an instruction leaflet from an old Hoover, Christmas cracker jokes, and so on. Then I started on the magazines, cutting out images of anything that interested me. And finally I took myself off to the college library, where I photocopied things from books before reaching for the scissors and glue." It was the beginning of a significant collecting habit. So what it is that makes a piece of graphic tat interesting? Is it the 'retro' thing - a fascination with a bygone age, the primitive printing techniques, the naivety of the design, or the use of color? All of the above, of course, but it's not quite that simple. "Occasionally people offer me something they've found that they think I might like", says Andy. "But usually they're wrong - it doesn't excite me at all. The magic is missing." To a graphic designer, most the content of this book can safely be regarded as 'bad' design. But there is some magic in each and every piece that has made Andy either pick it up off the street, trail through online links, or enter some dodgy looking shop on the other side of the world just to snap it up. Here you'll find everything from sweet wrappers to flash cards, from soap powder boxes to speedway flyers, from wrestling programmes to bus tickets. More tat than you can shake a stick at. Taken together, it represents a lifetime of gleeful hunting and gathering. * tat (noun) - anything that looks cheap, is of low quality, or in bad condition; junk, rubbish, debris, detritus, crap, shite

Book excerpt: From the Huguenots in the seventeenth century, Irish silk weavers in the late 1700s and East European Jews at the turn of the twentieth century through to recent immigrants from South-east Asia, East London has been shaped by a multicultural reality closely linked to a unique spirit of creative enterprise. Over the last thirty years in particular, the area has been transformed from a crumbling no-go area on the fringe of the nation's capital into a cluster of hip neighbourhoods buzzing with creative energy where a wide range of communities have come together. Voices East London connects the dots around the creative perspectives that make the area unique while providing colourful glimpses into its past by means of dynamic interviews with eighty of the area's leading movers and shakers. Among them are such artists, designers and cultural leaders as Gilbert & George, Sue Webster, Langlands & Bell, Charles Saumarez Smith, Iwona Blazwick, Maureen Paley, Viktor Wynd, Sandra Esquilant, David Waddington and Pablo Flack. Brimming with striking new photography and engaging insights into a distinctive milieu, Voices East London demonstrates that the area has well and truly moved beyond its old Dickensian aura.

Book excerpt: There are some artists for whom 'popular' is a bit of a dirty word. Grayson Perry is not one of them. He thinks art shouldn't be an exclusive club for people who 'get' it, but for everyone - that's why his new show is called The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever! This accompanying book contains all his latest works, in full colour - including his much-discussed 'Leave' and 'Remain' pots, and creations inspired by his recent TV series All Man - along with an introduction by Grayson, his sketches and his commentary on each piece, explaining the thinking behind them. The images and words here explore populism, celebrity, masculinity, identity, Britain today and Grayson himself. They invite us to look again at the things we think we know, and show us that nothing, not even Brexit, is black and white.

Book excerpt: Following the international success of his book The Arabian Horse in its multiple editions and languages, Hossein Amirsadeghi's Equine Journeys: The British Horse World casts an unprecedented eye on the complex universe of Britain's horses, focusing on people, places and organisations instrumental in breeding, racing, keeping and showing in the UK - one of the world's foremost equine environments. From Scottish hill farmers breeding Highland and Shetland ponies, to the luxurious world of British thoroughbred breeders; from neighbourhood stables to studs that foster some of the world's greatest horses (creating multi-billion-pound businesses in the process and supporting the global racing calendar), this book shows how equine business is defining the longstanding relationship between horse and human today. Through lively texts and glorious colour pictures, Equine Journeys explores the fundamentals that underpin the economics, politics and sporting components of some of the UK's greatest breeding and racing studs. Up-close-and-personal profiles provide unequalled access to owners, breeders, trainers, jockeys, stable lads and lasses, and polo fanatics. Enriched by its wealth of exclusively commissioned photographs, Equine Journeys features compelling images reflecting both the fantasy surrounding the realm of the British horse, and the reality of breeding and racing in the twenty-first century. The specially commissioned historical essay by leading expert Christopher Joll elaborates on the history of the horse and its place in British life, culture and society. Amirsadeghi's own essay looks inside the fiercely competitive contemporary breeding and racing scene at all levels, providing a survey of current trends and key players while shining a light on the exotic and the extraordinary in the realm of hunting and eventing, racehorses and ponies, Welsh cobs and Clydesdales, gypsy cobs and Shires, polo clubs, and the London and Counties equine social scene. Equine Journeys also explores the landscape and sociology of horses, horse sense and horsemanship in Britain at a time when the horse has lost its millennia-long economic and strategic importance, becoming instead a companion to humans, a source of natural beauty and the inspiration for sport.
