Download or read book Proceedings of the International Conference on Microplastic Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea written by Mariacristina Cocca and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on different aspects of microplastic pollution, offering authors and readers the opportunity to share their knowledge, identify issues and propose solutions and actions to face this environmental threat. Although plastic pollution is a well-known global problem, the recent discovery of microplastics and nanoplastics in seas and oceans represents a very alarming new environmental challenge. The book offers comprehensive insights into the origins of the problem, its impact on marine environments, particularly the Mediterranean Sea and coasts, and the current research trends aimed at finding technical solutions to mitigate the phenomenon. It is primarily intended for scientists and decision makers from industry, international, national and local institutions and NGOs

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the First International Conference on Waste Disposal in the Marine Environment by : E. A. Pearson

This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the First International Conference on Waste Disposal in the Marine Environment focuses on the disposal of sewage, including pollution of beaches, effects of wastes on marine biota and humans, and water quality. The selection first offers information on the fixed and changing valves in ocean disposal of sewage and wastes and characteristics and expeditious detection of bacterial indices of pollution of marine bathing beaches. Discussions focus on the coliform index and illness among bathers; enterococcus group as an index of pollution of saline bathing beaches; characteristics of the coliform group of bacteria; and procedures for expeditious determination of E. coli and coliform indices in water. The book then examines the risk of infection through bathing in sewage-polluted water; water pollution in Marseilles and its relation with flora and fauna; and the benthonic fauna of southern California in shallow depths and possible effects of wastes on the marine biota. The text examines the use of marine invertebrates as indicators of water quality; foraminiferal ecology around ocean outfalls off southern California; discharge of wastes into the sea in European coastal areas; and diffusion of sewage effluent in an ocean. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the effects of waste disposal in the marine environment.

This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a broad range of issues concerning microplastic pollution, including microplastic pollution in various environments (freshwater, marine, air and soil); the sources, fate and effects of microplastics; detection systems for microplastic pollution monitoring; green approaches for the synthesis of environmentally friendly polymers; recovery and recycling of marine plastics; wastewater treatment plants as a microplastic entrance route; nanoplastics as emerging pollutants; degradation of plastics in the marine environment; impacts of microplastics on marine life; microplastics: from marine pollution to the human food chain; mitigation of microplastic impacts and innovative solutions; sampling, extraction, purification and identification approaches for microplastics; adsorption and transport of pollutants on and in microplastics; and lastly, the socio-economic and environmental impacts: assessment and risk analysis. In addition to presenting cutting-edge information and highlighting current trends and issues, the book proposes concrete solutions to help face this significant environmental threat. It is chiefly intended for researchers and industry decision-makers; international, national and local institutions; and NGOs, providing them with comprehensive information on the origin of the problem; its effects on marine environments, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean Sea and coasts; and recent and ongoing research activities and projects aimed at finding technical solutions to mitigate the phenomenon.

Download or read book Oil on the Sea written by D. P. Hoult and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, changes in the scale of operations required to find and transport oil have led to a pollution problem of major proportions: oil on the sea. These changes occurred slowly, and the change in magnitude of the possi bilities for . pollution went unrecognized until a series of dramatic accidents recently gave the problem wide-spread public notice. The Torrey Canyon and Santa Barbara episodes are discussed in this volume. The changes in the scale of oil operations stem from an ever increasing demand for energy. In response to this demand, oil drilling from offshore rigs on the continental shelf has been rapidly developed. To inexpensively trans port oil to the consumers of energy, huge supertankers, of ever increasing size, are being constructed. These ships effect economic savings at the expense of being relatively underpowered, and less maneuverable. Having very deep draft, they are constrained to operate on the high seas and the few deep harbors of the world. Every year there is more oil pumped from the sea floor. Every year more oil is trans ported over the sea. Approximately one tenth of one per cent of this oil each year is spilled on the sea. The purpose of the present volume is to provide a summary of our current understanding of the problem of oil on the sea. Before describing in detail the topics presented, it seems well to point out .
