Book excerpt: Mechanics of Flow-Induced Sound and Vibration, Volume 2: Complex Flow-Structure Interactions, Second Edition, enables readers to fully understand flow-induced vibration and sound, unifying the disciplines of fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, vibration, acoustics, and statistics in order to classify and examine each of the leading sources of vibration and sound induced by various types of fluid motion. Starting from classical theories of aeroacoustics and hydroacoustics, a formalism of integral solutions valid for sources near boundaries is developed and then broadened to address different source types, including hydrodynamically induced cavitation and bubble noise, turbulent wall-pressure fluctuations, pipe and duct systems, lifting surface flow noise and vibration, and noise from rotating machinery. Each chapter is illustrated with comparisons of leading formulas and measured data. Combined with its companion book, Mechanics of Flow-Induced Sound and Vibration, Volume 1: General Concepts and Elementary Sources, the book covers everything an engineer needs to understand flow-induced sound and vibration. This book will be a vital source of information for postgraduate students, engineers and researchers with an interest in aerospace, ships and submarines, offshore structures, construction, and ventilation. - Presents every important topic in flow-induced sound and vibration - Covers all aspects of the topics addressed, from fundamental theory, to the analytical formulas used in practice - Provides the building blocks of computer modeling for flow-induced sound and vibration

Book excerpt: On behalf of the Program Committee, it is our pleasure to present to you the proceedings of the 7th Symposium on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID 2004), which took place in Sophia-Antipolis, French Riviera, France, September 15–17, 2004. The symposium brought together leading researchers and practitioners from academia, government and industry to discuss intrusion detection from research as well as commercial perspectives. We also encouraged discussions that - dressed issues that arise when studying intrusion detection, including infor- tion gathering and monitoring, from a wider perspective. Thus, we had sessions on detection of worms and viruses, attack analysis, and practical experience reports. The RAID 2004 Program Committee received 118 paper submissions from all over the world. All submissions were carefully reviewed by several members of the Program Committee and selection was made on the basis of scienti?c novelty, importance to the ?eld, and technical quality. Final selection took place at a meeting held May 24 in Paris, France. Fourteen papers and two practical experience reports were selected for presentation and publication in the conf- ence proceedings. In addition, a number of papers describing work in progress were selected for presentation at the symposium. The keynote addresswas given by Bruce Schneier of Counterpane Systems. H? akan Kvarnstrom ̈ of TeliaSonera gave an invited talk on the topic “Fighting Fraud in Telecom Environments. ” A successful symposium is the result of the joint e?ort of many people.

Readers find discussions on a wide range of applications, including fluid control devices, gas and fluid measurement devices, medical testing equipment, and implantable drug pumps. Professionals get practical guidance in choosing the best fabrication and enabling technology for a specific microfluidic application, and learn how to design a microfluidic device. Moreover, engineers get simple calculations, ready-to-use data tables, and rules of thumb that help them make design decisions and determine device characteristics quickly. addressed at the design stage to reduce the risk of failures in the field is presented. The book includes technical details of all state-of-the-art Li-on energy storage subsystems and their requirements, and provides a system designer a single resource detailing all of the common issues navigated when using Li-ion batteries to reduce the risk of field failures. The book details the various industry standards that are applicable to the subsystems of Li-ion energy storage systems and how the requirements of these standards may impact the design of their system. Checklists are included to help readers evaluate their own battery system designs and identify gaps in the designs that increase the risk of field failures. The book is packed with numerous examples of issues that have caused field failures and how a proper design/assembly process could have reduced the risk of these failures.

Book excerpt: The 11th International Symposium on Graph Drawing (GD 2003) was held on September 21–24, 2003, at the Universit` a degli Studi di Perugia, Perugia, Italy. GD 2003 attracted 93 participants from academic and industrial institutions in 17 countries. In response to the call for papers, the program committee received 88 re- larsubmissionsdescribingoriginalresearchand/orsystemdemonstrations.Each submission was reviewed by at least 4 program committee members and c- ments were returned to the authors. Following extensive e-mail discussions, the program committee accepted 34 long papers (12 pages each in the proceedings) and 11 short papers (6 pages each in the proceedings). Also, 6 posters (2 pages each in the proceedings) were displayed in the conference poster gallery. In addition to the 88 submissions, the program committee also received a submission of special type, one that was not competing with the others for a time slot in the conference program and that collects selected open problems in graph drawing. The aim of this paper, which was refereed with particular care andUNCHANGEDtworoundsofrevisions, istostimulatefutureresearchinthe graph drawing community. The paper presents 42 challenging open problems in di?erentareasofgraphdrawingandcontainsmorethan120references.Although the length of the paper makes it closer to a journal version than to a conference extended abstract, we decided to include it in the conference proceedings so that it could easily reach in a short time the vast majority of the graph drawing community.
