Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 8 February 2015 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Erskine May. May is the most famous of the fifty holders of the office of Clerk of the House of Commons. His continued renown arises from his Treatise upon the Law, Privileges, Proceedings and Usage of Parliament, first published in 1844 and with its 25th edition currently in preparation. It is known throughout those parts of the world that model their constitutional arrangements on Westminster as the 'Bible of Parliamentary Procedure'. This volume celebrates both the man and his book. Bringing together current and former Clerks in the House of Commons and outside experts, the contributors analyse May's profound contribution to the shaping of the modern House of Commons, as it made the transition from the pre-Reform Act House to the modern core of the UK's constitutional democracy in his lifetime. This is perhaps best symbolised by its enforced transition between 1834 and 1851 from a mediaeval slum to the World Heritage Palace of Westminster, which is the most iconic building in the UK. The book also considers the wider context of parliamentary law and procedure, both before and after May's time. It constitutes the first sustained analysis of the development of parliamentary procedure in over half a century, attempting to situate the reforms in the way the central institution of our democracy conducts itself in the political contexts which drove those changes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First General Conference of Lutherans in America: Held in Philadelphia, December 27-29, 1898; Proceedings, Essays and Debates Only with the publication of the proceedings and papers of the General Conference of 1898 can its significance be pro perly estimated. Such interest was elicited that there has been much premature discussion based upon the meagre press reports and the various impressions Of participants and visi tors. This volume enables the Convention to be carefully studied, and makes its appeal to future generations Of Luther ans whom it will influence. Apart from their place in the Conference the papers are of themselves of permanent value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Half of all the colleges founded before the Civil War did not survive. Wittenberg did. This is the story of a college on the Ohio frontier that sought to Americanize millions of German immigrants and to Americanize the German Lutheran Church. In spite of that, Wittenberg was caught in the anti-foreign prejudice of “Nativists” who feared the influence of immigrants on American institutions. The school prospered after the Civil War as America embraced German culture from classical music to the Christmas tree. The school again faced prejudice in the anti-German furor of World War I. Simultaneously, this is the story of students and faculty coping with the pressures of a nation going from the poverty of the rural frontier to the wealth of an urban-industrial society and how they and Wittenberg changed."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lutheranism in America is a comprehensive history of the Lutheran church and the Lutheran people in the United States. This volume ... presents the historical facts and interprets the general course of events in such a way as to prevent the reader from losing the main thread in a mass of details. At the same time this work points the way toward advanced study. Beginning with the early Lutheran church in New Netherlands, the author shows the relationship between American culture and the Lutheran Church. He carefully presents the development of this church in the light of historical perspective, showing how the church and the nation were born in America at the same time, grew up side by side and developed by similar stages of progress. Dr. Wentz also shows how the Lutheran church in America is an integral and potent part of American Christianity, and its members a typical element of the American nation."--Jacket.
