Muñoz-Guerrero and published by Mario Cotilla Rodriguez. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title perfectly describes the content and purpose of the book. The language used in the presentation is appropriate and conforms to contemporary scientific terminology. The structure of the text is harmoniously justified and includes 54 figures, 33 tables and 199 references, in 99 pages. Authors sustain the idea of St. Francis of Assisi (Italy, ¿?-1226): “La verdadera enseñanza que transmitimos es lo que vivimos; y somos buenos predicadores cuando ponemos en práctica lo que decimos”. For the first time, a seismotectonic model for Central America is proposed and argued, subdividing it into two Seismotectonic Provinces: America Central I (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua) and America Central II (Costa Rica and Panama). Significant differences appear in these regions with respect to the existing models in Chile, México and Peru; where Central America's lower hazard is highlighted. This is very important at the time of making hazard and risk estimates, especially when the limited monetary resources of Central American countries are known. The authors undertook an extensive review of all the materials available to them, and the use of several bibliography (in different languages) reflected in the book demonstrates it. An element of consideration has been the argumentation about the fragmentation of active structures, the transmission of stresses and the corresponding deformations; as well as the hierarchy of all tectonic elements. Highlights the novel proposal of a set of active tectonic knots in Central America, and Nicaragua in particular. In this sense, in the vicinity of the Managua City, a knot is defined that justifies its unique seismic activity. It is hoped, mainly, in Nicaragua, and that it will allow them to question, with critical eyes and minds, the dogmas and models that are accepted by the majority of the scientific community. In this regard, the following reasoning is given: “Cualquier ayuda innecesaria es un obstáculo para el desarrollo” (María Tecla Artemisa Montessori/ Italy, 1870-Netherlands, 1952). Finally, the use of several languages for the presentation of the work and the different covers is commendable. This should be an incentive for the new generations [“The limits of my language are the limits of my world” (Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgensteine/ Austria, 1889-United Kingdom, 1951)].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of The Cambridge History of Communism explores the rise of Communist states and movements after World War II. Leading experts analyze archival sources from formerly Communist states to re-examine the limits to Moscow's control of its satellites; the de-Stalinization of 1956; Communist reform movements; the rise and fall of the Sino-Soviet alliance; the growth of Communism in Asia, Africa and Latin America; and the effects of the Sino-Soviet split on world Communism. Chapters explore the cultures of Communism in the United States, Western Europe and China, and the conflicts engendered by nationalism and the continued need for support from Moscow. With the danger of a new Cold War developing between former and current Communist states and the West, this account of the roots, development and dissolution of the socialist bloc is essential reading.

Book excerpt: The Quaternary has been a period of major climatic and environmental oscillations, and our knowledge of these past variations is important for our understanding of the possible impact of human activity on the present-day environment. Quaternary Climates, Environments and Magnetism presents an up-to-date account of the rich variety of uses of magnetic measurements in the environmental geosciences. Ten chapters by leading world authorities describe the highlights of environmental magnetic work during the past decade and identify directions for future research. This comprehensive and multidisciplinary coverage leads to a more thorough understanding of the environmental processes involved. This volume will be of interest to research scientists from a wide range of disciplines working on Quaternary environments, including earth and environmental sciences, physical geology, geography, and palaeoclimatology. It will also be valuable as a supplementary text for graduates and advanced undergraduates.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Polish, Czech, and Slovak Holocaust Fiction aims to increase the visibility and show the versatility of works from East-Central European countries. It is the first encyclopedic work to bridge the gap between the literary production of countries that are considered to be main sites of the Holocaust and their recognition in international academic and public discourse. It contains over 100 entries offering not only facts about the content and motifs but also pointing out the characteristic fictional features of each work and its meaning for academic discourse and wider reception in the country of origin and abroad. The publication will appeal to the academic and broader public interested in the representation of the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, and World War II in literature and the arts. Besides prose, it also considers poetry and theatrical plays from 1943 through 2018. An introduction to the historical events and cultural developments in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Czech, and Slovak Republic, and their impact on the artistic output helps to contextualise the motif changes and fictional strategies that authors have been applying for decades. The publication is the result of long-term scholarly cooperation of specialists from four countries and several dozen academic centres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers authors who wrote important works in the fields of the history of ideologies, the comparative study of dictatorships, and intellectual history. The book is a state of the art reassessment and analysis of the ideological commitments of intellectuals and their relationships with dictatorships during the twentieth century. The contributions focus on turning points or moments of breakage as well as on the continuities. Though its focus is on an East–West comparison in Europe, there are texts also dealing with Latin America, China, and the Middle East giving the book a global outlook. The first part of the book deals with intellectuals' involvement with communist regimes or parties; the second looks at the persistence of utopianism in the trajectory of intellectuals who had been associated earlier in their lives with either communism or fascism; the third tackles intellectuals' role in national imaginations from either the left or the right; and, the fourth ties late twentieth century phenomena to current phenomena such as the persistence of anti-Semitism in the West, the slow erosion of the values upon which the EU is built, the quagmire in Iraq, and China's rise in the post-Cold War era. The collection provides a comprehensive big-picture of intellectual genealogies and dictatorial developments.
