Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Two Hundred Chess Problems IN offering this collection of problems to the Chess com munity, I feel that°a few prefatory words are required byway of explanation. Several previous composers have come be fore the public in the same manner, among whom I may enumerate Mr. Kling, Mr. Brown of Leeds, and J. B. Of Bridport. Their example has given me confidence, and I venture to hope that the present collection will be found to bear some features especially distinctive of English problems, such as may justify my publishing it in a separate form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Chess The greater part of them were originally printed in various chess papers and magazines, between 1858 and 1861, under his own name and various noms de plume. Quite a number of four, five and six moves have been omitted for the reason that the solutions have been lost, and the' writer is now unable to solve them, either through decay of chess knowledge, consequent upon fifteen years cessation from all familiarity with the game, or because the positions are faulty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Chess Problems: With Chess Puzzle Frontispiece It may be true that a composer is not a good judge of the merits of his work, but it is not less true that he can best appreciate the difficulty of combining clear construction with some subtlety, and freshness of idea. He knows well where the shoe pinches, and he must often take strong measures to guard against flaws, or to prevent second solutions. These meet him face to face, though they seldom pres'ent themselves to the notice of the solver after they have been overcome by the introduction of pieces condemned, perhaps, as unnecessary. By the off-hand critic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two-Move Chess Problem IN any book on Chess Problems - even the most element ary treatise - the student must be assumed to possess a full knowledge Of the names and moves Of the chess pieces, a familiarity with chess notation, and a fairly comprehensive grasp of the relative powers Of the men, acquired by actual play over the board. It is even desirable to have at least mastered thoroughly the volume in this series on the Game of Chess before attempting to construct a problem, or even to solve one. In fact, without some experience in chess play the true nature Of a problem can hardly be realized, even apart from its innate technicality. Chess Problems are the cream Of chess. They contain the highest class Of chess play within the limits of a few moves; and in their composition there has been evolved an unwritten code of rules which from time to time has been modified by the refining process it has undergone in the minds of composers. This code has given to the art Of composition characteristics distinct from those of chess playing, A Chess Problem is an arrangement of the chess pieces illustrating chess strategy. Its purposes are to act explicitly as'a challenge to the solver, and implicitly as an appeal for appreciation when the solution has disclosed its merits. At the Frederick County College young Hanshew was noted for his mathematical tal ent; but, while deeply engaged in Algebra and Geometry, the battles of South Mountain and Antietam caused so many wounded to be brought into Frederick City that the school buildings were all taken for hospital pur poses; thus suddenly ended his school days. Soon afterward Mr. Hanshew went to the of fice of the Frederick Examiner to learn the art of printing, where he faithfully served his apprenticeship, investing all his surplus earn ings in type, so that when he assumed the editorship of the Maryland Chess Review, now so favorably known all over the chess world, his printing office needed only the addition of chess and checker type to make it complete. Mr. Hanshew is a musician, and has traveled with several Minstrel and Theatrical troupes in the capacity of pianist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chess Lyrics: A Collection of Chess Problems Out of these varied channels has grown the collection that I now lay before the reader. In it I have tried to bring together in convenient form the later productions of the man who is undoubtedly the greatest chess-problem artist now living. I have added all that seemed to me of value in the immense amount of critical matter dealing with his problems which has been published in tourney reports or periodicals, or communicated to me in manuscript. I have included very few opinions of my own, save where a few words seemed necessary by way of explanation or otherwise. Many problems, especially of course Mr. Mackenzie's less known ones, have consequently been left without any critical remarks whatever; while in other cases the notes are of considerable length. Although this has resulted in depriving the work of any pretense to uniformity of treatment, I have preferred to publish it just as it stood in my manu script rather than try to fill in the gaps with made-to-order criticisms of my own. I am responsible, however, for all the unsigned portions of the notes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pierce Gambit, Chess Papers and Problems HE following pages are, _for the most part, the result of the Authors' devotion of their leisure hours to Chess during the past ten years. During that time the development of the game, both in the analysis of the Openings and in the Problem Art, has been most marked. At first it was intended to supple ment the modern English text books on Chess analysis with the results of recent discoveries, as the books last published were greatly wanting in this respect, and had by no means kept pace with the requirements of the day; this part of the proposed task is, however, at last, happily, in such competent hands, that the scope of these investigations has been limited in this branch of Chess to the full discussion of the new Gambit (a variation of the Vienna Game) - the result of°the last two years incessant study. It is hoped that this part of the book will be found both new and interesting: the attack and defence being sufficiently even to give, on the whole, about equal chances to each side. The other Chess papers have been carefully revised and in some cases entirely refwritten. The problems have all been composed since the Autho'rs' last published collection, and are selected out of a large number so as to preserve in pcrmament form only the best. Those byzw. Timbrell Pierce are distinguished from those by J. Pierce by being numbered with Roman numerals. It is believed that they are all sound, and the Authors take this opportunity of cordially 'thanking Messrs. Bolus, Robins and Pilleau for having carefully examined most of the positions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Amusements in Chess The conductors of the Saturday Magazine were pleased to find that their efforts to extend the knowledge of the game of Chess were signally successful. In the four years during which these articles appeared, they were frequently receiving letters on the subject from all parts of the coun try. They were pleased to find that numerous persons made their first acquaintance with Chess through the pages of the Saturday Magazine, while the Chess Problems afforded an agreeable source of amusement to the family circle, and produced many a pleasant and friendly contest as to who should be the first to solve them. The Editor was constantly receiving solutions to these problems from ladies as well as gentlemen; from the families of clergymen; from schools, and from many a solitary Chess student.
