Ces questions renvoient à d'authentiques problèmes philosophiques. En effet, la question de l’annonce du diagnostic amène à interroger le rapport entre l’Alzheimer et la normalité (en quel sens est-ce une maladie ?). La question de l’information pronostique amène à interroger l’unité de la notion (est-ce une maladie ou un syndrome ?). La question de la maximisation de l’autonomie exécutionnelle conduit à se demander s’il faut penser l’Alzheimer d’après le modèle des maladies aiguës ou des maladies chroniques (est-ce une maladie ou un handicap ?). Enfin, la question du respect de l’autonomie décisionnelle conduit à se demander quelle est sa place au sein des affections qui touchent le psychisme (maladie « neurologique » ou maladie « psychiatrique » ?). Cette maladie brouille les catégories de pensée auxquelles nous sommes habitués. Par conséquent, si le premier objectif de cette étude est bien d’essayer de répondre aux questions qui nous été adressées par les médecins, elle a pour second objectif d’essayer de dissiper les ambiguïtés qui entravent sa compréhension, autrement dit de réduire l’impensé qui entoure encore la maladie d’Alzheimer.

What were once considered normal human events and common human problems—birth, aging, menopause, alcoholism, and obesity—are now viewed as medical conditions. For better or worse, medicine increasingly permeates aspects of daily life. Building on more than three decades of research, Peter Conrad explores the changing forces behind this trend with case studies of short stature, social anxiety, "male menopause," erectile dysfunction, adult ADHD, and sexual orientation. He examines the emergence of and changes in medicalization, the consequences of the expanding medical domain, and the implications for health and society. He finds in recent developments—such as the growing number of possible diagnoses and biomedical enhancements—the future direction of medicalization. Conrad contends that the impact of medical professionals on medicalization has diminished. Instead, the pharmaceutical and biotechnical industries, insurance companies and HMOs, and the patient as consumer have become the major forces promoting medicalization.
