Book excerpt: One of the main challenges in nuclear and particle physics in the last 20 years has been to understand how the proton's spin is built up from its quark and gluon constituents. Quark models generally predict that about 60% of the proton's spin should be carried by the spin of the quarks inside, whereas high energy scattering experiments have shown that the quark spin contribution is small - only about 30%. This result has been the underlying motivation for about 1000 theoretical papers and a global program of dedicated spin experiments at BNL, CERN, DESY and Jefferson Laboratory to map the individual quark and gluon angular momentum contributions to the proton's spin, which are now yielding exciting results. This book gives an overview of the present status of the field: what is new in the data and what can be expected in the next few years. The emphasis is on the main physical ideas and the interpretation of spin data. The interface between QCD spin physics and the famous axial U(1) problem of QCD (eta and etaprime meson physics) is also highlighted. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although fundamental to the observable universe, the proton is not elementary. Rather the particle is a bound state of three valence quarks and the QCD vacuum that condenses around them, its properties an amalgamation of those underlying degrees of freedom. Naive expectations presume that contributions from the valence quarks dominate these properties, but the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments which first investigated the proton structure in detail revealed the importance of the vacuum. In particular, polarized DIS measurements uncovered a surprisingly inadequate quark polarization, necessitating significant contributions to the proton spin from elsewhere. The total spin of the gluon field confining the quarks is one possibility, but a contribution only weakly constrained by the electromagnetic probes of DIS. An observable far more sensitive to contributions from the gluon field can be found in the collision of two polarized protons. By correlating the incident proton helicities with final-states originating from an initial-state gluon, the double-helicity asymmetry directly probes the underlying gluon polarization and provides much stronger experimental constraints. Asymmetries measured with hadronic final-states have already improved the understanding of the proton spin structure significantly, but with accumulating statistics these measurements will eventually be limited by systematic uncertainties. Although direct photons are rare in the hadronic environment, the simplicity of the resulting asymmetry ultimately promises a more precise probe of the gluon polarization. Located at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the only facility in the world capable of accelerating and colliding polarized proton beams, the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) provides the large acceptance electromagnetic calorimetry and charged particle tracking critical for measuring direct photons and, subsequently, their asymmetry. Utilizing data from the 2009 running period with intricate simulation, state-of-the-art statistical methods have been developed to tease out the rare photon signal from an overwhelming hadronic background to enable the first direct photon measurements at STAR. This thesis details the construction of the unpolarized cross section and an initial double-helicity asymmetry, proving the feasibility of the direct photon program at the experiment.

Book excerpt: Twenty years of polarized lepton-nucleon scattering experiments have found that the contribution from quark spins (1/2[delta] [sigma]) to the spin of the proton is only ~ 35%. This has lead researchers to look elsewhere, specifically to gluon spin ([delta sigma]) for a large contribution to proton spin. [delta sigma] has been only loosely constrained in polarized DIS and SIDIS experiments. Polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC provide sensitivity to [delta sigma] through measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALL. This work presents a measurement of ALL for inclusive 7ro production in polarized proton-proton collisions using the STAR detector and data from RHIC Run 6. 7r0s are abundantly produced at mid-rapidity in proton-proton collisions, making them natural candidates for studies of [delta] [sigma]. Novel techniques for reconstructing 7ros at STAR are discussed, and a measurement of the unpolarized cross section presented. Finally, the measured ALL is compared to perturbative QCD predictions and from this comparison constraints are placed on [delta] [sigma].

Book excerpt: This thesis discusses the process of extracting the longitudinal asymmetry, A[superscript W][subscript L] [More or Less], describing W [right arrow [mu]] production in forward kinematic regimes. This asymmetry is used to constrain our understanding of the polarized parton distribution functions characterizing [bar [Mu]] and [bar [d]] sea quarks in the proton. This asymmetry will be used to constrain the overall contribution of the sea-quarks to the total proton spin. The asymmetry is evaluated over the pseudorapidity range of the PHENIX Muon Arms, 2.1

The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.

Book excerpt: One of the primary goals of the spin physics program at the STAR experiment is to constrain the polarized gluon distribution function, [delta]g(X,Q2), by measuring the double longitudinal spin asymmetry, ALL, of various final-state channels. Neutral pions provide a potentially powerful final state because they are copiously produced in p+p collisions and have few backgrounds. In 2009, STAR took 14 pb-1 of integrated luminosity of 200 GeV p+p collisions, with average beam longitudinal polarization of 59%. Neutral pions produced in these collisions can be identified using STAR's large-acceptance electromagnetic calorimeter, with help from tracking from the STAR Time Projection Chamber. This work presents a measurement of the inclusive neutral pion ALL from this data, based on a new [pi]0 reconstruction algorithm. A comparison to theoretical predictions and other experimental results suggests that the current best-fit value of AG, the gluon contribution to the proton spin, is too small and that [delta]G is actually comparable in magnitude to the quark contribution to the proton spin [delta][sigma].

Book excerpt: This book contains proceedings of the 7-week INT program dedicated to the physics of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the United States. The 2015 NSAC Long Range Plan recommended EIC as the 'highest priority for new facility construction following the completion of FRIB'. The primary goal of the EIC is to establish precise multi-dimensional imaging of quarks and gluons inside nucleons and nuclei. This includes (i) understanding the spatial and momentum space structure of the nucleon through the studies of TMDs (transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions), GPD (generalized parton distributions) and the Wigner distribution; (ii) determining the partonic origin of the nucleon spin; (iii) exploring the new quantum chromodynamics (QCD) frontier of ultra-strong gluon fields, with the potential to seal the discovery of a new form of dense gluon matter predicted to exist in all nuclei and nucleons at small Bjorken x — the parton saturation. The program brought together both theorists and experimentalists from Jefferson Lab (JLab), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) along with the national and international nuclear physics communities to assess and advance the EIC physics.

Book excerpt: Getting down to the bottom line is what this proceedings digest is all about, as any physicist will tell you: spin is the fundamental concept in physics. The applications are pretty universal due to the fact that, using spin-related phenomena, physicists are trying to reveal the fundamental principles of nature – and things don’t come much more bottom-line than that. This volume is the proceedings of the 17th International Spin Physics Symposium which is a forum to discuss spin physics and related topics.

Book excerpt: Understanding what contributes to the intrinsic angular momentum (spin) of the proton has been a major goal of the nuclear physics community. In the 1980s, it was discovered that quarks contribute 30% to the spin of the proton. This information led to a search to find other contributions to the spin of the proton. At STAR, the double spin asymmetry (ALL) is measured as it is sensitive to the polarized gluon distribution (Dg(x)). The STAR 2009 inclusive jet ALL at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV has been incorporated into two independent global fits. These fits show for the first time a statistically significant non-zero gluon contribution to the spin of the proton in the parton momentum fraction range x > 0.05. Dijet ALL is also measured at STAR. Dijets are advantageous since the parton momentum fraction (x) of the initial partons may be reconstructed to first order from final state measurements. In 2013 STAR collected an estimated 250 pb-1 of data at sqrt(s) = 510 GeV. The higher center of mass energy will allow STAR to probe Dg(x) at x values as low as 0.02. The large statistics will allow a reduction in the uncertainties. Once the data is incorporated into future global fits, it will allow for a more precise determination of Dg(x). The 2013 dijet ALL results will be presented. The results show good agreement with both global fits and previous STAR results dijet measurements.

Book excerpt: Colliding beams of high energy polarized protons at RHIC is an excellent way to probe the polarization of gluons, {anti u} and {anti d} quarks in a polarized proton. RHIC is the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider being built now at Brookhaven in the ISABELLE tunnel. It is designed to collide gold ions on gold ions at 100 GeV/ nucleon. Its goal is to discover the quark-gluon plasma, and the first collisions are expected in March, 1999. RHIC will also make an ideal polarized proton collider with high luminosity and 250 GeV x 250 GeV collisions. The RHIC spin physics program is: (1) Use well-understood perturbative QCD probes to study non-perturbative confining dynamics in QCD. The author will measure gluon and sea quark polarization in a polarized proton, and polarization of quarks in a transversely polarized proton. (2) Look for additional surprises using the first high energy polarized proton colliders. The author will look for the expected maximal parity violation in W and Z boson production, search for parity violation in other processes, and test parton models with spin. This lecture is organized around a few of the key ideas: Siberian Snakes -- What are they? High energy proton-proton collisions are scatters of quarks and leptons. At high x, a polarized proton beam is a beam of polarized u quarks. Quark and gluon collisions are very sensitive to spin. The author discusses two reactions: how direct photon production measures gluon polarization, and how W− boson production measures u and {anti d} quark polarization.
