Book excerpt: Burnout in law enforcement is an issue, yet the extent of the problem for probation officers is unclear due to the minimal amount of research conducted within this group. A problem in the probation officers' work environment might be contributing to their early burnout. This study was designed to investigate whether probation officers' work environment in regard to supervisor support, autonomy, work pressure, clarity of work responsibilities, and managerial control as measured by the Work Environment Scale Form R (WES) is related to their report level of burnout as compared to burnout norms established by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). The research design of the study was quantitative, using the MBI-HSS and the WES Form R as a combined survey instrument to measure burnout and real perceptions of the workplace environment in the population of New York State Probation Officer Association members (n = 666). Research results indicated that environmental factors might contribute to high burnout levels. Interestingly, high managerial control and high burnout levels were found, which would appear to be contradictory. When an organization is unhealthy, the members end up suffering. When recognition can be made that there are certain environmental factors that are negatively affecting members, then change needs to occur. My study has shown that there are environmental factors that are affecting members of the NYSPOA.

Book excerpt: This study assesses how the probation officers (POs) navigated their roles in the workplace as corporal punishment and isolation were replaced with rehabilitative interventions. Previous literature talks about probation officers’ role in the rehabilitation process and the use of discretionary power. In addition, the literature outlines that POs face issues of role conflict and high stress levels. One-on-one interviews with 9 probation officers as well as insights from Lipsky’s theory of street level bureaucrats were used to better understand PO’s experience and how it has affected their well-being. After talking with the POs, it was found that the department has implemented many changes over the last 10 years aside from adopting the concepts of the Missouri Model. The POs reported that these changes led to an influx of violence and new techniques of youth management such as positive reinforcement and building relationships. The increased violence and the changes have resulted in an overall increase in Pos’ stress levels causing issues of burnout. It becomes clear that, while there is a basis of understanding for how the program should run, POs uses their discretionary power to help them navigate through the implementation process of the new program.

Book excerpt: Research concerning occupational burnout is an emerging field of interest, as the ramifications can be severe and costly for employees and organizations (Paine, 1984). Thus, it is important to identify contributing variables, as well as possible protective factors against burnout. This study aimed to investigate the connection between probation officer burnout and the officers' relationships with supervisors and coworkers. One goal of this study was to determine whether these relationships protect the officers from the negative effects of burnout, such as emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a decline in professional efficacy. With this in mind, another aim of the study was to investigate whether burnout predicts lower mental health competency, as well as negative beliefs about mental health treatment effectiveness. -- Results indicated that supervisor support was significantly correlated with all of the variables of burnout. Furthermore, coworker support was significantly negatively associated with emotional exhaustion. Significant correlations were also found between the variables of burnout and the variables relating to mental health. Moreover, there was a positive correlation between mental health competency and beliefs about treatment effectiveness. However, the original model proposed in this study demonstrated poor fit indices. An alternative model is offered, removing mental health competency and beliefs about treatment effectiveness from the model.
