Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the new century, we can look at our modern high tech industry and see that oil has gone from a few oil seeps to the single most important raw material traded in the world, in volume and in value, in just over 100 years. The commercial history of the oil industry has been relatively short and dramatic. Where will we be heading in the next 100 years? It would be brave to predict 10 years from now, let alone 100. 100 years ago who could have predicted space travel, a man on the moon, the television, the computer, the internet? The list is endless. The 16th World Petroleum Congress serves as a forum for scientists, technical personnel, economists and management in the oil industry. The trends and outlook integral to the future success of the industry are the focus of discussions, forums and presentations throughout the Congress. The presentations explore international business opportunities, exchange ideas on global issues, and provide the latest information on technology, business management and industry developments. The 16th Congress theme is Petroleum for Global Development: Networking People, Business and Technology to Create Value. closing ceremonies, the plenary papers, review and forecast papers, technical forum papers and all of the posters and interactive technology presentations. The first volume will contain all the ceremonies and plenary speeches, the Review Forecast Papers and a full index for the complete Proceedings. The other four volumes will contain all the technical presentations split into distinct groups; upstream; downstream; natural gas, petrochemicals and transportation; business management. As well as containing all of the papers, the Proceedings will include a forum review written by the chair of each, plus details of the question and answer sessions. A CD-ROM of the Proceedings is included in the cost of the Five Volume Set.

Book excerpt: This report focuses on assessing the implications of alternative assumptions about technological process as they affect the costs of supplying natural gas in the future and provides assessments of the implications of new and ongoing uncertainties that are particularly important for energy demand and for the supply of specific energy forms. A major part of the analytical effort focused on the development of two cases on the impact of technological change on the costs of finding, developing, and producing natural gas. An analysis of the impact on Canadian gas markets of a large increase in United States demand for natural gas is related to the two cases. The implications of increased natural gas imports into the U.S. from Mexico on North American natural gas markets, and specifically Canadian markets, is also considered. The study also analyzes supply, demand, and markets for crude oil, natural gas liquids, coal, and alternative and renewable energy. A glossary is included.

Book excerpt: This report assesses the oil & gas resource potential in the Cenozoic and Mesozoic strata of the three major sedimentary basins of the Pacific margin of Canada: the Tofino, Queen Charlotte, and Georgia basins. Ten conceptual petroleum plays are defined on the basis of various geological controls, with most plays identified from stratigraphic considerations. Once defined, the ten plays are each statistically analyzed to estimate their hydrocarbon resource potential. Total potential & field sizes quoted in the report are all median value estimates of in-place hydrocarbon volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The petroleum industry is enduring difficult financial times because of the continuing depressed price of crude oil on the world market. This has caused major corporate restructuring and reductions in staff throughout the industry. Because oil exploration must now be done with fewer people under more difficult economic constraints, it is essential that the most effective and efficient procedures be used. Computing Risk for Oil Prospects describes how prospect risk assessment — predicting the distribution of financial gains or losses that may result from the drilling of an exploration well — can be done using objective procedures implemented on personal computers. The procedures include analyses of historical data, interpretation of geological and geophysical data, and financial calculations to yield a spectrum of the possible consequences of decisions. All aspects of petroleum risk assessment are covered, from evaluating regional resources, through delineating an individual prospect, to calculation of the financial consequences of alternative decisions and their possible results. The bottom lines are given both in terms of the probable volumes of oil that may be discovered and the expected monetary returns. Statistical procedures are linked with computer mapping and interpretation algorithms, which feed their results directly into routines for financial analysis. The programs in the included library of computer programs are tailored to fit seamlessly together, and are designed for ease and simplicity of operation. The two diskettes supplied are IBM compatible. Full information on loading is given in Appendix A - Software Installation. Risk I diskette contains data files and executables and Risk 2 diskette contains only executables. The authors contend that the explorationist who develops a prospect should be involved in every facet of its analysis, including risk and financial assessments. This book provides the tools necessary for these tasks.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together 17 comprehensive, data-rich analyses to provide an updated perspective on the Mexican Gulf of Mexico, Florida and northern Caribbean. The papers span a broad range of scales and disciplines from plate tectonic evolution to sub-basin scale analysis. Papers are broadly categorised into three themes: 1) geological evolution of the basins of the southern Gulf of Mexico in Mexico, Bahamas and Florida and their hydrocarbon potential; 2) evolution of the region’s Late Cretaceous to Neogene orogens and subsequent denudation history; and 3) geological evolution of the basins and crustal elements of the northern Caribbean. This book and its extensive data sets are essential for all academic and exploration geoscientists working in this area. Two large wall maps are included as fold-outs.
