Book excerpt: Set against the anarchy of the Civil War, this novel tells the story of the raven-haired beauty Lynora Hollingsworth, daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, an aspiring young artist who spends one wild, enchanting evening in the arms of a stranger, but plans to spend the rest of her life in a marriage that has the approval of her family. However, when her fianc rapes her, she decides to strike out on her own rather than subject herself or the child she has discovered she is carrying to this mans cruelty. Rene Michael DuClaire, gambler and notorious rake, to whom she flees for asylum, is also the handsome stranger to whom she has given her heart. When he surmises her condition and realizes he is the father, he marries her against her will. It is a stormy relationship exacerbated by the onslaught of the Civil War, a conflict over which all characters must make some tough decisions regarding their own comfort and their consciences. There are various subplots in the story. One of them deals with the rejected suitors espionage for the Union army, and reveals his sinister nature in his desire for revenge. Another has to do with an Underground Railroad system in Louisiana, and a third deals with the drama of the Civil War itself on the people it touched in the swampy city of New Orleans and surrounding area. The scenes that relate to the war have been researched and are essentially factual, including the shipyard strike, all battle scenes, and even the explosion of the powder plant in Gretna. The captains, majors, and generals were all real people involved in the war at the places described. Only the lieutenants and privates are fictional.

Book excerpt: Acclaimed, award-winning author James L. Nelson - praised as "a master of both his period and the English language" by Patrick O'Brian - returns to the world of sea and sail in this page-turning historical novel. Jack Biddlecomb has much to live up to, being as he is the eldest son of the esteemed Captain Isaac Biddlecomb, wealthy merchant captain, leading light of the War for American Independence, and newly-minted congressman. Jack finds himself off to a promising start, however, when he's given command of the merchant vessel Abigail bound from Philadelphia for Barbados. But even before the docklines are cast off, the voyage, which should have been routine, begins to look like a stormy passage indeed. Jack is saddled with two passangers, one as unpleasant as he is highborn, the other a confidant of the Abigail's owner who cannot help but meddle in the running of the ship. What's more, with the French making prizes of American merchantmen, Abigail's owner has armed the ship and instructed Jack to fight if need be, thrusting the first-time captain and his small crew into a naval war for which they are totally unprepared. What Jack does not know, but soon begins to suspect, is that he is being used as part of a bigger plot, one that will have repercussions on an international scale.

Book excerpt: Few writers can rival the sheer storytelling mastery of New York Times bestselling author Virginia Henley. Brimming with sensual tension, humor, and narrative power, Henley's award-winning novels have enchanted readers worldwide. Now in The Marriage Prize-the third novel in her Plantagenet trilogy, which began with The Falcon and the Flower and continued in The Dragon and the Jewel-this incomparable storyteller returns to medieval England and brings to life a love story so passionate it will take your breath away. Orphaned at a young age, Rosamond Marshal is a royal ward of Eleanor de Montfort, sister of King Henry III and wife of the renowned warlord Simon de Montfort. Under the worldly countess's tutelage, Rosamond learns not only the skills of a chatelaine, but how to wield her female power by dressing exquisitely, conversing wittily, and charming men mercilessly. As she reaches young womanhood, the beautiful heiress is fearful of leaving the security of the de Montfort household and fulfilling her betrothal to the powerful bachelor knight Rodger de Leyburn. Just as Rodger devilishly outmaneuvers Rosamond's strategems to break their betrothal, Prince Edward will accept none of Rosamond's excuses to forestall her marriage. For the prince is determined to reward Rodger, his dearest friend, with a wealthy, noble wife. Slowly Rodger woos Rosamond, convincing her that his love extends beyond her estates and her wealth. But no sooner does Rosamond become Rodger's wife and experience all the exquisite ways a man can love a woman than she finds herself and her husband on opposite sides of a bloody civil war. For Rodger is fighting alongside Prince Edward and the king to quell the barons' rebellion, led by none other than Rosamond's beloved guardian, Simon de Montfort. With the gripping storytelling, vibrant historical detail, and powerful insight into a woman's heart that have made her one of the most popular authors of romantic fiction, Virginia Henley sweeps readers into the most captivating and wildly passionate love story of her career.
