Download or read book Privatization in Turkey written by Ahmet Zaifer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Privatization in Turkey: Power Bloc, Capital Accumulation and State, Ahmet Zaifer offers a rare look on privatization in Turkey that involves all three historical periods of Turkish privatization process -1980s and 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s- and covers different forms of privatization from divestiture to public-private partnership. Benefiting from theoretically informed qualitative research spanning nearly a decade that has involved several interviews with key informant groups, extensive review of newspaper articles and detailed analysis of annual reports of businesses, Ahmet Zaifer convincingly proves that the acceleration of privatization in Turkey has not only provided advantages to so-called favourable capital groups and the government elites, but also consolidated the position of Capital in General at the expense of labouring-popular classes and the natural environment of the entire country.

Download or read book The Financial and Operating Performance of Privatized Companies in Turkish Cement Industry written by Alovsat Muslumov and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the post-privatization performance of privatized companies in the Turkish cement industry. The findings indicate that, when performance criteria for both the state and private enterprises are considered, privatization in the cement industry results in significant performance deterioration. Total value added and the return on investment declines significantly after privatization. This decrease mainly stems from deterioration in asset productivity. The decline in asset productivity, however, is not caused by an increase in capital investment, since postprivatization capital investment did not change significantly. Significant contraction in total employment and an increase in financial leverage after privatization are among the key research findings. Privatization through public offering, gradual privatization and domestic ownership are found to stimulate the financial and operating performance of firms following privatization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work analyzes the Turkish effort at privatization from 1979 to 1990, shedding light on the obstacles that arose in a country with a 50-year tradition of economic paternalism. From the creation of Turkey after World War I, state control, complete with state-owned firms and government financial institutions, was integral to the state and enshrined as a principle in the 1937 constitution. But with the oil shocks of the 1970s, major adjustments became necessary, and by 1979 a programme of privatization was begun.

Download or read book Evaluation of Turkish Privatisation Policies written by Cetin Dogan and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objectives of this study are to evaluate current implementation of privatisation programme, and assess a comprehensive privatisation policy in Turkey. To do this, a questionnaire was used to identify perceptions and preferences of senior managers in both private and state enterprises, public administrators, and academics with regard to the privatisation policies and current implementation of the privatisation programme. The study indicated that the most preferred policy was for expansion of the Turkish privatisation programme to include deregulation, aimed at increasing competition and creating a more favourable climate for private enterprise to prosper in. The least preferred policy was for expansion of the Turkish privatisation programme to improve the performance of state enterprises rather than privatisation. The study also presents analysis of hard data obtained from the Turkish Public Participation Fund, the agency responsible for the planning and execution of the programme and entrusted with selling the state's shares in companies. It was found that, to date, implementation of the privatisation programme has been contrary to the objectives proposed in 1986. As a result, the study concludes that privatisation can be useful for the Turkish economy if it is accompanied by competition and necessary regulation.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Regulation in Turkey by : Tamer Çetin
Download or read book The Political Economy of Regulation in Turkey written by Tamer Çetin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Economy of Regulation in Turkey brings together leading international scholars and experts on Turkey and regulatory reform to provide essential information on the recent Turkish experience and its relation to competition policy. After the 1980 liberalization reform, Turkey tried to introduce competition in many industries, but network industries have remained as monopolies. At the end of the 1990s, regulatory reform was initiated and independent regulatory agencies have been established by the government. Comprehensive discussions of these network industries, in particular airlines, electricity, natural gas, telecommunications and environment regulations, are offered. The contributors inquire how economic theory and historical analyses can enlighten the character of market processes and the role for government action in these industries, and the contributions shed light on the very recent changes in the regulatory structure and important legal cases that shape the future of regulated industries. This book discusses these issues in an international perspective and relates the Turkish experience to other similar countries, such as in Eastern Europe and Central America. This book serves as a useful guide to those who want to understand major changes in Turkey and regulatory reforms in other emerging markets, making it of interest to researchers and PhD students concerned with regulatory economics, the Turkish economy, and economic policy in emerging markets.
