Book excerpt: "Fast, outward-oriented, job-generating, private-sector-led growth is the key to eliminating poverty in Egypt and, ultimately, the standard by which the success of its current economic reform effort will be measured. But can the Egyptian private sector deliver that kind of growth? What are the impediments that should be removed for that to happen? This book is an attempt to answer those questions. It is based on selected, edited papers contributed by local and foreign individuals and institutions during Egypt's First Private-Public Private Sector Development Conference, held in October 1994. A wide range of technical areas are covered (laws, regulations, finance, the role of the state, industry, and so on) with a common goal in mind: the articulation of a business environment conducive to growth."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Transforming the country's economy to sustain job-rich and sustainable growth are pivotal steps in its march towards prosperity. Today’s search for new development models, accelerated by the unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic, calls for shifting up a gear in raising Egypt’s industrial capabilities to compete in an industry 4.0 and agro 4.0 landscape. The Production Transformation Policy Review (PTPR) of Egypt uses a forward-looking framework to assess the country's readiness to embrace change. This includes an analysis of the game-changing potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and perspectives on agro-food and electronics (i.e. what in Egypt is referred to as part of the engineering sector), as well as identifying priorities for future reforms. This review is the result of government-business dialogue, and benefited from peer learning from Italy and Malaysia. It also resulted from international and multi-stakeholder knowledge sharing through a dedicated Peer Learning Group (PLG) and the OECD Initiative for Policy Dialogue on Global Value Chains, Production Transformation and Development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ¿¿the world is changing and so should the region. After decades of state domination of economic activity, many governments around the world are relying increasingly on the private sector to foster economic growth.¿ There is a growing consensus that the time has come for governments and private sector leaders of the Middle East and North Africa to forge a new partnership for development. However, the question is: what kind of partnership should the two parties seek in order to ensure sustainable economic development? This volume attempts to address this question. To make the investigation tractable, the papers deal with four key facets of the government-private sector interface: the business environment, privatization, infrastructure, and two activities that induce transaction costs, tax administration and government procurement. The volume derives its content from papers on the theme of public-private partnerships discussed at the second Mediterranean Development Forum (MDF2) held in Marrackech, Morocco on September 3-6, 1998. The papers presented here are intended to contribute to the ongoing debate on the development opportunities and challenges facing the countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

Book excerpt: This book studies the impact of Egypt's Economic Reform and Structural Adjustment Programme (ERSAP), the effects of which have been of great interest to the international community. Organizations such as the World Bank and the IMF uphold the programme as a success story and example for other countries to follow. ERSAP also has its critics, however, who resent its tendency to downsize government and fear possible negative effects on growth and development. The author discusses these concerns along with those regarding the possible negative social effects of ERSAP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last ten years the Egyptian economy has undergone a major transformation which has led to greater decentralisation and international competition. This transformation, along with changing circumstances in the surrounding Arab areas and the end of hostilities with Israel, has given a boost to the Egyptian economy. Without underestimating the obstacles that still stand in the way of sustained economic growth and development, this book foresees a more optimistic outlook for Egypt than do other such studies carried out by international organisations such as the World Bank. Egypt’s Economic Potential argues that the main problem facing the Egyptian economy is that the government must resort to expensive public expenditure policies, in particular subsidising foodstuffs, in order to maintain the political consensus. This creates a savings gap which prevents the authorities from channelling savings towards financing the projects which will cerate economic growth. However, the book suggests that because the present regime is fundamentally stable and even further change at the top would be unlikely to alter the institutional framework of the country, the Egyptian economy has the potential for stable and rapid growth.

Book excerpt: This comparative study of development strategies in Egypt and Mexico in the twentieth century sheds light on two major questions: what is 'development' in the Third World? and what does the pursuit of development actually mean for contemporary Third World states? It addresses these issues by looking closely at the experiences that in this century led Egypt and Mexico to embark on their current strategies of 'development through liberalization.' The nineteen essays by prominent Egyptian, Mexican, and American scholars cover the historical background of development in the two countries, then examine a wide range of subjects: agriculture and industry, private and public economic sectors, planning and bureaucratization of the state, political participation, external factors, population and urbanization, the role of women, and culture and political development.
