Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an inmate serving 45 years for a drug conviction when he was 23, this is an in-depth view living behind bars from the perspective of prisoners themselves. Sections of the book are based on length of imprisonment. Prisoners in Fort Dix, N.J., detail their unique experiences, thoughts, and feelings about life on the inside. Some describe the actions that lead to their confinement, or detail the complexities of living in all-male communities. Others reveal the ways they cope with their terms, or the expectations they have for life after prison. Santos offers the gripping stories of men serving a variety of terms, providing commentary and analysis as he guides readers through the prison experience. How men adjust to their confinement, and how they utilize their time while serving their sentences, can be a predictor of future success or failure both in prison and society upon their release. Through these often-difficult accounts, readers gain a greater understanding of what it means to be a prisoner, and how the system itself can contribute to both positive adjustment and negative outcomes alike.

Book excerpt: Journalists John McCoy and Ethan Hoffman spent four months inside the walls of the Washington State Penitentiary at Walla Walla in 1978, just as Washington, once a leader in prison reform, abandoned its focus on reform and rehabilitation and returned to cell time and punishment. It was a brutal transition. McCoy and Hoffman roamed the maximum-security compound almost at will, observing and befriending prisoners and guards. The result is a striking depiction of a community in which there was little to do, much to fear, and a culture that both mimicked and scorned the outside world. McCoys unadorned prose and Hoffmans stunning black-and-white photographs offer as authentic a portrayal of life in the Big House as outsiders are ever likely to experience. Originally published in 1981, Concrete Mama revealed a previously unseen stark and complex world of life on the inside, for which it won the Washington State Book Award. Long unavailable yet still relevant, it is revitalized in a second edition with an introduction by scholar Dan Berger that provides historical context for the book's ongoing resonance, along with several previously unpublished photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every man who enters the custody of the Indiana Department of Corrections does so in the same condition—naked as the day he was born. Under the wary eyes of prison guards, he and fellow inmates must shower and then de-louse one another. Naked, but not alone, they emerge into their new existence as wards of the DOC. Some of these inmates will spend their prison lives behind tall fences with many restrictions on their activities; others may be released to work outside the prison walls and allowed many liberties. Their fate depends upon the nature and extent of their crimes and the availability of space in the appropriate facility. Prison Profiles delineates the profiles of both the prisons and the prisoners who inhabit them. The book describes the classification system used by the Indiana Department of Correction to determine which inmate is assigned to which institution by following six typical male offenders through the process. Portraying a wide variety of criminals and their crimes, Prison Profiles shows how their sentences may be served under vastly different circumstances. Profiling the facilities, the work investigates the great contrast in levels of security and custody maintained at different types of penal institutions. By studying the backgrounds of the six inmates, monitoring their progress through the classification and assignment procedures, and then witnessing their daily lives behind bars, the reader is introduced to the complex issues involved in the administration of the criminal justice system. The timely topics of crime control, inmate treatment, prison overcrowding and cost containment are addressed. A glossary is provided to explain the vocabulary of the professionals and the vernacular of the prisoners. The following chapter summaries describe what readers may expect to encounter as they examine the profiles. Chapter One: The Reception and Diagnostic Center Follow the fortunes of typical prisoners from fumigation to indoctrination. See how an inmate is assimilated into the prison system from the delousing shower to the psychological testing. Learn about the security levels and custody designations which range from open camps to isolated cells. Find out how the Indiana Department of Corrections decides which prisoner goes where. Chapter Two: Classification Meet a Classification Specialist and look over his shoulder as he conducts interviews with and reviews paperwork of three typical offenders—a drunk driver, a troubled teen, and a middle-aged child abuser. See how the specialist considers the nature of the offense, past criminal history, and test results to determine ideal placement of the offender. Learn why most inmates serve only half of their sentences. Chapter Three: Classification Continued Spend another day with the Classification Specialist, this time in the company of three offenders who spell major trouble for the system—a street-wise drug dealer with diabetes, a quiet murderer with a psychosis, and a violent gangster with a trigger-hot temper. Read their psychological records and learn how staff members try to alert one another to the potential problems they pose. Chapter Four: The Farm Follow the drunk driver to one of the state’s oldest prisons. Learn about the history of the penal system in Indiana--how inmates lived in tents while making the bricks to build dor??????? ??? ?????????? ??? ????????? ??? ???? ?? ????? ?????????? ??? ????? ? ??????????? ?????? ?? ?? ??????? ?? ?? ??? ?????? ??????? ?? ??????? ????????? ????????? ??????? ??? ??????????? ?? ??? ???? ????????? ?? ?????? ?????? ??????? ?? ??? ????????? ????????????????? ????? ??? ???????????????? ????? ??????? ?????? ?????????? ???????? ??????? ??? ????? ??????

Is the presence of foreign inmates comparable across regions and countries of Europe? How can one explain the differences in the trends shown by the absolute numbers and the percentages of foreign inmates from 2005 to 2015? Do foreign citizens have less access than nationals to alternatives to imprisonment? Do the data available allow researchers to establish whether the growth in the use of community sanctions and measures since the 1990s plays a role in the fluctuations observed in the percentage of foreign inmates? The answers to these and many other questions can be found in this book, which compiles and updates a series of specific indicators collected over 11 years through the Council of Europe Annual Penal Statistics (better known as the SPACE statistics), and accompanies the two volumes on prisons in Europe 2005-2015 in this collection. This volume includes maps and tables illustrating the state of prison (2005-2015) and probation agencies (2009-2015). In addition, the situation is analysed through individual country profiles, which include key facts and graphs covering the years 2005-2015.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief presents preliminary findings from research in three prisons in Maharashtra, India on experiences of prison inmates there living with HIV. The study explores health care services in these prisons, and problems experienced by inmates in India living with HIV, as well as their staff and caregivers. Through this preliminary study, the researchers shed light on the experiences of inmates in Indian prisons, with an aim of presenting questions for future research. The author provides an overview of the global conditions of prison inmates living with HIV, as an international comparative context for examining the cases in India. Major problems highlighted in the cases include: living conditions, high risk behavior during incarceration, delivery of medical services and adherence to ethical guidelines. Results of the study reveal that overcrowding and inadequate nutrition were major concerns for inmates living with HIV; there were no support systems available inside the prisons to address the stress related issues of the inmates; and, the prison hospital did not have provisions to cater to the treatment needs of inmates living with AIDS. The study also found that confidentiality regarding the HIV positive status could not be maintained inside the prison. This Brief presents a window into the experience of inmates in India, and presents questions for future research to understand and improve living conditions and medical service delivery within the prison system. This work will be of interest to researchers in criminology and criminal justice, particularly interested in incarceration or health issues, public health and related areas such as public policy, international studies, and demography studies in India.

Book excerpt: "Amazing is the word for the California Institution for Men at Chino, a prison with few bars and fewer locks, where inmates may decorate their living quarters, and picnic with their families on Sundays...Kenyon J. Scudder, author of this book about Chino, has been superintendent of the institution for the past eleven years and is largely responsible for such a revolutionary experiment. From its beginnings he relates the trials and errors in setting up such a prison, his difficulties in selecting the first members of his staff and in choosing the first inmates. He describes the various operations of the prison, its self-government by elected advisory council, and the experiences of the inmates with sex, drugs, and liquor with fascinating case studies..."--Jacket.
