Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Veterinary Science a Text-Book for Use in Agricultural Schools If veterinary science is to attain its justly deserved place in the agricultural college curriculum, it must be so presented as to bring out the close relationship that should exist between it and the natural and physical sciences now taught. In this book are incorporated the writer's ideas of the manner in which this object may be accomplished. The text differs from those on veterinary science at present available to agricultural students in that it places greater emphasis upon the important subjects of anatomy and physiology. No attempt has been made to treat in great detail the various subjects considered, the scope and purpose of the book being to present the more important facts rather than those of highly technical character. The aim has been to select from the immense amount of material available that most suitable for agricultural students. In Part I the structure and functions of the animal body have been described in such a way that the student may readily use the information in judging animal form, capacity, and productivity, as well as in the problems connected with the feeding and breeding of animals. In Part II the student is shown how to recognize sickness in animals, render first aid treatment, and prevent diseases. The reason for presenting basic facts relative to the chemistry of the body in the first chapter is that experience shows that students do not appreciate the principles of veterinary science unless they have some knowledge of chemistry. Those who have had only an introductory course in chemistry, or are taking the subject at the same time they are studying veterinary science, should have no difficulty in grasping the facts that it has seemed desirable to include. This edition is a development of the author's former publication entitled, "The Horse in Health and Disease." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book Principles the Practice: Veterinary Medicine The need of an up-to-date, scientific text designed for student use has been long felt by teachers of the internal diseases of animals. The author has personally experienced this need as a teacher of veterinary students for over twenty years. The few books available on the subject are either obsolete or so filled with errors that they mislead rather than instruct. Some of the best of them are translations from the German and French. In too many instances the translators have been neither veterinarians nor teachers of veterinary medicine, and too few of them linguists. Furthermore, the books in this field have not been designed for undergraduate students; they are bulky, comprehensive works of reference of little pedagogic value; all of them have been superseded by newer editions in the original tongue. Although this volume is designed primarily for the student, it will be found valuable to the practitioner, investigator or intelligent stockman who may have need of knowledge of the fundamental principles of the practice of veterinary medicine presented in concise, clear-cut and at the same time not too dogmatic form. While the author has many to thank for assistance in preparing this volume, among his fellow teachers, investigators and practitioners, he is especially indebted to Professor D. H. Udall, of the New York State Veterinary College, Cornell University, who kindly read the manuscript and offered many valuable suggestions from his rich experience, practically all of which have been incorporated in the book. Messrs. Lea & Febiger are also thanked for their patience, courtesy and efficient service in making the edition mechanically good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Veterinary Studies for Agricultural Students Illustrations have not been used in any case merely as pictures. Every one is intended to illustrate something and make that illustration as impressive as possible. Suggestions to the teacher. It is not intended that this, as a text book, should entirely supplant the lecture work. On the contrary, nearly every lecture may be supplemented to advantage and so give opportunity for originality and the greatest effective ness. It will be readily understood that certain subjects are of very great importance in some states, and unimportant in others. Each teacher should add what he thinks best for his grade of pu pils and his local needs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Essentials of Veterinary Law by : Henry Bixby Hemenway
Download or read book Essentials of Veterinary Law written by Henry Bixby Hemenway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Veterinary Law Following the publication of my "Legal Principles of Public Health Administration" there came a request for a handbook which could be used as a text in veterinary schools and agricultural colleges. About one-third of the graduates from the veterinary schools take the examination for entrance into the service of the national government, but up to the present time there has been no small text which gave them the needful information as to their duties, responsibilities, and limitations of authority in such service; and scientific farmers need a knowledge of their legal rights and liabilities in animal husbandry. In writing the present work I have kept in mind the needs of several distinct classes, and have consequently divided it into four parts. The brief statement of the general legal principles involved, as found in Part I, is essential for all. Veterinarians in private practice need to know their legal rights, responsibilities, and liabilities. The best insurance against claims for damages is found in a knowledge of the requirements of the law. The writer has had his attention called to several cases in which veterinarians have incurred liabilities by innocently violating common legal principles. It is a mistake to depend too much upon a knowledge of enacted statutes. The common law is more frequently violated by veterinarians. These principles most applicable to private practitioners, as found in Part II, should be mastered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
